Another angle/question on JBo decision...

Has anyone floated the idea or considered this? What if Jbo shuts it down now, rests for 2 months and sees if Iowa is a bubble/Tourney team and if he feels better come March then he rolls the dice, plays again and sees how far he can take this Iowa team and of course then his eligibility is done?

With potential talk of Garza or Weezy leaving maybe this affects his mindset too? Also, are the hip injuries genetic/wear and tear or has anyone divulged? What a game last night!

I thought I read that the other hip is bothering him, now, also. If so, he may have surgery on that side, too, which would certainly end his season.

In a long interview with him after the game last night, he suggested that he came back pretty quick, and that over time thru the season it might essentially heal itself, even though it is giving him issues right now. He is trying to figure out if the risk is worth the reward I guess.

It's been impressive to see him contribute when he isn't shooting a lot / shots aren't falling. This has really surprised me as I was of the opinion that if he isn't making shots, his value / loss if he shut it down would not be that dramatic. That is clearly not the case given what he does to stabilize the offense and get guys open looks. Even if his shot isn't falling, he still has a major clutch factor late in games if nothing else.

His presence on the floor makes people pay attention to him/guard him. That does help make things easier for others. Hopefully he makes a decision that is best for him

Which is exactly why I hope he doesn't shut it down, as long as it would be ok for him long term.

I don’t think Garza or Wieskamp are threats to leave early this year. If JBO redshirts, we’d return an experienced core group of JBO, CJF, CMac, Wieskamp, Garza, Joe T—if those guys commit defense it’s our best team since at least the Marble/White team and perhaps since Horner/Haluska/Brunner senior year.

JBO knows that any professional career he has will be in Europe’s lower leagues. My guess is he more concerned about being an Iowa basketball legend than a couple year pro career in Europe like Gatens. And he wants to compete for a title and break the sweet 16 streak. I think this is factoring into his decision too. If he’s back—next year is a prime go year.

It wouldn't be easy, but IMHO Jordan should shut it down and come back full throttle next year for, as others have noted, a realistic shot at a great season and a big run in the NCAA.

CJ Fredrick looks like a blossoming Bohannon as far as shooting stroke and cold-blooded skills at crucial moments. CJ can grow into that role the rest of the year, and again as others have noted, Joe T will be up and down, but every second on the floor he's learning to adapt to the college game, and at least be February, he will be fantastic.

Barring more major injuries, I think this team would adapt to losing JBo the rest of the year and continue to surprise a lot of people, and the Hawkeyes would have a shot at a super season next year with JBo back for one final run.

When ISU started making a run last night, you could see Toussaint trying to do too much which led to a couple quick TOs. JBo is that calming influence to "reset" and get back into the offense w/o panicking.

It's experience and a mindset; being cool under fire. That's what we'll need someone else to take up the mantle on, if Bohannon opts for surgery. Personally, I'd rather have him go that route, as if he plays another game, then the injury gets bad enough he can't play at all, you're in the same position as redshirting him, w/o the option to come back next year.

Where is all of the talk coming from on Garza leaving? I haven't read that anywhere but on here.

If he makes 1st or 2nd team AA, he'd naturally be an NBA draft candidate. Whether his college success transfers to the NBA game is certainly up for discussion, but he'd get consideration and would have a choice to make.

I would respectfully disagree. The NBA drafts almost exclusively on potential - college production and accolades is taken into very little consideration. While Garza is having a phenomenal year so far and his growth has been unbelievable (I think surpassing everyone but maybe his own expectations), his skill set does not translate very well to the NBA. Luka seems like a very smart kid and I am sure he realizes that. I would not be at all surprised if he uses the upcoming off-season to work on his remaining weaknesses (and by weaknesses I don't necessarily mean he is horrible at these things but stuff that would be his biggest weaknesses in his game) like quickness, lateral movement, overall defense, and handles. I just don't see any way he would leave early when he likely wouldn't be drafted.

IMO, we need JBo much more this year than next. First, I love them at Iowa, but I would bet a lot of money that neither Luka nor Joe W would be first-round NBA draft picks next year. Second, CJ and JoeT will have a year more of experience next year, which should especially help JoeT. Third, Iowa is adding two more promising guards next year. Fourth, I hope Patrick and Nunge will both be back healthy next year, giving us a lot of guys in the rotation. Kriener is the only significant graduation, although Evelyn is a decent back up guard, and maybe Pemsl will not be back for his fifth year, given the total lack of production we have seen so far.

That said, it is totally JBo's call. Only he knows how he feels, and whether it seems to be improving.

Kriener is a significant graduation for next year. Not just pts/rebounds - he adds a lot that doesn't show in stat lines.

Nunge should be back healthy, and I think he'll add something to the mix, but Kriener is proven, Nunge was barely getting his feet wet again before the injury. His main weakness his first year was defense - and he did look better in his early starts, but still unproven.

Agree that Kriener is a significant loss, but the only one (other than maybe JBo). Point was that we need JBo more this year, because Iowa will be more experienced and deep next year, except maybe center.

CJ is a tremendous asset. He reminds me a bunch of those Wisconsin players in the past that pissed me off! He moves without the ball better than anyone on the team. Smart, tough kid. He “gets it”.

JoeT can pick it up for the loss of JBo this year and let him get healthy for a big run next year. I wish Kriener had one more year, he’s a good sub for Garza and gets down the court twice as fast.

Iowa State sucks so my assessment of this years team is still in question, but next year’s team will be sick if everyone comes back. I want JBo to take a redshirt.

Earlier in the year, I was actually thinking he may play the 10 games, shut it down and then grad transfer out.

Now, if Wieskamp and Garza come back, I think he will stay and play a 5th year. This team could be really good next year if everyone comes back.

Fran is going to have to get creative with schollies though.

he will also already have his degree.
