A Granville County Schools spokesperson said Tuesday that an Oxford woman charged with statutory rape was a former fifth-grade teacher at Creedmoor Elementary School, where she taught the child with whom she allegedly had a sexual relationship.
Megan Selfe, 25, was arrested by the Granville County Sheriff's office after she turned herself in Feb. 6.
She is charged with one felony count of statutory rape of a child less than or equal to the age of 15 and one felony count of indecent liberties with a child.
According to Granville County Sheriff Brindell Wilkins, the charges are in reference to only one child, but it is believed the sexual conduct happened more than once.
Selfe was a fifth-grade teacher from January 2016 to July 2016, when she resigned.
She taught the child with whom she is alleged to have had the relationship; that child would have been 10 or 11 years old at the time. Stan Winborne, a spokesperson for Granville County Schools, said it is not known whether the relationship began when Selfe was the child's teacher or after. The child would now be 12 or 13 years old.
Selfe had no prior charges on her record before her arrest, Wilkins said.
Wiborne said Granville County Schools would assist law enforcement to help in the investigation.
"We follow our policies and our procedures to the letter, and we feel like those provide a strong layer of protection," Winborne said to The Daily Dispatch. "We're always trying to be vigilant in making sure that our kids are safe."
Selfe was released on bond. She will appear in court on Wednesday.
