Another honor for QB recruit

Presumably he would redshirt in 2018; right? I mean, that's really about the only thing that makes sense, unless he is the second coming of Roger Staubach or something like that. It sounds like he could be a 3-year starter after hopefully getting his feet wet during Stanley's senior year.

With Wiegers transferring and rumors about Boyle percolating, that #2 spot is up for grabs. Mansell may have a leg up but if this kid is as legit as signs are pointing to, it may be a battle. Could be he is the real #2 but Peyton gets mop up time to save the red shirt.

We saw Stanley getting #2 despite the coaches saying he and Wiegers were close, because of this I feel the staff values snaps/2nd team reps a lot more than a red shirt. So, if he’s the true number 2, he’ll probably be listed as the number 2.

Petras will red shirt but by the end of the 19 season I'm thinking Petras will have won the #2 spot. Need to keep getting qbs each class because mansell will likely transfer if Petras is the heir apparent. Staff also values having a 3 year starter even if the race is even. Getting into a cycle of successive 3yr starters is not a bad idea although it does not always work out that way.

I think your 100% on it Dutchy. Let them compete everyday but if it's just mop up save the red shirt. I also agree with the posters about getting better WR in the system.

I really think were headed in that direction. Think about the number of times in the first half of the season that people railed Stanley for missing guys who were open on long pass routes. A bunch right? As the season progressed Stanley kept getting in a better flow with his new WR's and TE's and we started connecting on some of those ball to Easley, and Fant. As he gets more work with ISM, Fant, Hock, Smith, Cooper, and the new guys, Harrell, Tracy, and Lockett, I think you'll see the passing offense continue to progress.

Good call. Did Stanely get early season mop up duty or were his appearances when CJ went out for medical reasons or a nuked knee brance?

Yes, he played in the NDSU game in 16 when CJ went out for a series.
I know there were quite a few people (including myself) that questioned whether it was right to take the redshirt off Stanley in 2016. I then ask the question as to whether having a starting Junior QB going into next year (instead of a starting Sophomore QB) had an impact on Petras’ decision to commit to Iowa. Obviously a lot of variables involved, but something I’ve pondered more recently.

The circumstances were different that year. CJB was a senior, so whoever won the #2 job was expected to start the next year. There was a greater urgency at that point.

The #2 spot for 2018 wouldn't be expected to be the starter in 2019, as Stanley is penciled in there.

I find it funny that less than a year ago, people were drooling over Mansell and thinking he had a shot at starting(!!!) in 2017. Now he is yesterday's news.

Imagine the intrigue with three, 5-star QB's on your roster next fall @ GA. Imagine, too, the battle @ FSU if the starting QB in the FSU/Bama game is 100% ready to go. I like our QB situation for this fall.

Does anyone know if any of the CA schools recruited Petras? He is in the backyard of CAL and Stanford, schools with good reputations for pro style QBs...Rogers, Luck, Goff, Elway. And USC and UCLA QBs both declared for the NFL.

I don't really get it, either. I'm excited about Petras' potential, but don't throw Mansell to the curb. I think it'll be a great battle between them.

It's nice to have the problem of which QB's play and which will eventually transfer. Mansell I think has a decent arm is is much more mobile then Stanley or Petras, so I wouldn't discount him if the rumors were true and he was looking good running the scout team. But I think whether the next QB behind Stanley is Petras or Mansell, the loser of that battle likely transfers.

I'm excited for whoever wins the battle. That beings said this is a perfect example of why I think we waist a scholly taking a qb EVERY YEAR. If we skipped 1 out of every 4 there would be gaps and you could sell that as PT. Right now the staff has nothing to really sell Duggan.

Injuries, attrition, recruiting errors, etc. Recruiting a QB every year is smart (i.e. not a "waist").

Don't start sleeping on Mansell. This kid is a gunner. Think Drew Tate type arm with a above avg legs. Only knock on him may be that fact he is a ride or die gunslinger like Tate and Beathard and isn't the conservative QB KF loves to have.

I'm real high on Stanley but if Mansell gets into some games next season be prepared to to start hearing some fans begin calling for the backup if the offense keeps bogging down.

There will be fans calling for the backup if Stanley plays great, and Mansell doesn't see the field. Nature of the beast, most popular guy on the roster almost every year is the backup QB. o_O

Is Harrell still at WR ? I thought he was practicing at DB this season. Would really like to see us try and get another bigger bodied WR in this class.

Interesting take, could be true. Unless we get confirmation from the staff we’ll never know.

Just as a counter argument, assuming Petras is better than Mansell. Wouldn’t it be better to give him the backup role both years? The likelihood of Stanley getting injured both years is low. So, if in one year he is injured Iowa would have the second best option on the field instead of the third. Plus, he would still get his redshirt the next year and all the 2nd team reps, helping him further his development the most.

If Duggan wanted Iowa, he could have committed. The staff can't sit around and wait while depth dwindles with the hopes a kid may choose Iowa down the road. With the departure of Wiegers, change of positions for Cook and uncertainty with Boyle, the staff had to take a QB this year. Would you have preferred they took some low level QB with no other offers so things looked better on paper for Duggan, who may or may not be interested in Iowa? You get the best players you can...always... and it looks like Petras is pretty darn good, so I won't lose any sleep over a kid that hasn't even committed. If Duggan is turned off by the alleged competition at Iowa, imagine what must be going through his mind as he looks at the depth chart at some other top 25 type programs that are recruiting him. The staff should be commended for finding Petras and not only getting him to visit but ultimately commit. He looks like a keeper.

We've been assuming that Stanley is lock solid for the next three years. But he could regress, get injured or just plain and simple get beat out of the job. I think getting beat out is not highly likely, but injury could open the door to Mansell or Petras. If Stanley gets injured, Mansell steps in and plays great, getting the starting job back might be difficult for Stanley. This is how Kurt Warner became a star with the Rams.

Yeah I'm excited about this guy. But I don't see how you guys can pass them over Manziel when we've never seen Manziel play. I hope one of them is the real deal

Years ago, people kinda expected Wienke to win the QB spot ... he was a highly rated QB out of small-town Illinois. However, our own in-state guy, Vandenberg, put up even more prolific numbers and was even a better option. I feel bad for Vandenberg that he was caught in such a bad transition-scenario on the O (when he was a SR).

Sounds like we got a really good one!

Click for the SF Chronicle story

Whoa. The Chronicle Metro Player of the Year is no small feat. He beat out every high school QB in the Bay Area. That's an area with nearly 10 million people. "The ball just jumps out of his hands." I like the sound of that. I'm trying not to get too excited, but damn, this kid sounds like a real talent.

Breaking Goff’s records is impressive. Even Alabama needs depth at QB. Who will be Bama’s starter in the fall?

I said that early this year, but how many schools have had better QB depth then Iowa in the last 5 or 6 years? Rudock, Beathard, Sokol, Shimonek, Stanley, Mansell, and now Petras.

I agree we landed a good one in Petras but Mansell came to Iowa with the intention of being the Hawkeye QB of the future. He won't back down from a challenge from anybody. It is going to be fun watching these two battle it out for the starting QB position after Stanley goes to the NFL.
