I was giving some thought as to what the starting lineup would be for Iowa next year

Starters
1.Gessel
2.Jok
3.Uthoff
4.Jones
5.Woodbury

the 2s
1.Clemmons
2.Ellingson/Moss
3.Uhl
4.Wagner
5.Jones

From what i have read about Williams he should probably redshirt and I wouldn't be surprised if either hutton or flemming also redshirt (or both)

Thoughts?

You're right -its way too early - so I'll just venture this guess: Andrew Fleming will play more minutes right away than any other of the incoming freshman and by mid-season he will be solidly in the top 8-9 man rotation.

Covered in another thread. But my first thought is McCaffery doesn't recruit guys to play strictly one position. Two deeps are for football. If Clemmons ends up being just a sub for Gesell I will be stunned. And of the new guys I've got no idea who will be the next Aaron White or Devyn Marble, nor do I know which will be the next Patrick Ingram.

Sapp wasn't just a sub for MG this year, but he came off the bench by mid-season. Could be the same in 2015-16. IF Sapp does start, Jok will have to come up big offensively at forward with Uthoff, allowing Sapp's D to enter the starting line-up.

Agree about the freshmen, there is upside to all, but some will excel and some won't and some you won't know until 2016 or beyond.

One could argue that there could be an all Iowa starting lineup. The argument being that Gessel is an "Iowa kid".

When's the last time that happened. I know that we had Brunner, Horner, and Haluska from '04 - '07, but are there teams that had this many Iowa kids and were successful? By the way, this is no way implies that I don't think that they can be, it's just curiosity.

I hope Jones is good enough to be a starter, because that will mean that he can play at both ends of the court. Hard to say which freshman will be in the regular rotation. I agree that Williams might be the most likely to redshirt, so he can work on his PG skills. I doubt that more than one player will redshirt unless someone has a serious injury.

I may be one of the few that really doesn't care who the starters are; as long as the production comes from both the starters and bench I think Fran will have a competitive team.

I really doubt Jones starts right away. People said that about Dickerson last year, too. But it's been awhile (Gesell/Woodbury?) since somebody has started their first year in the program under Fran.

I'd guess Gesell, Jok, Uthoff, and Woodbury are locks with the last spot going to either Clemmons or Uhl.

I would guess the starters will be

Gesell
Jok
Uthoff
Uhl
Woodbury

The bench will consist of Clemmons and Jones for sure and the rest is up in the air. It will depend on if Ellinson improves and what freshman are ready.

I think you will see a shorter rotation next year with the starters getting a lot of minutes. I think for them to be good next year Jok has to take the next step because they need someone besides Uthoff to score.

Barring injury, none of the scholarship players will redshirt.

Jones was recruited over HS players because he is a good player and he fills a need. He is going to play. A lot.

Jok will be a 3rd year player AND a scorer. He will play a lot, too.

And Clemmons will be a FOURTH year player for McC. He will definately play a lot.

It won't matter who starts. All six of Clemmons, Gesell, Jok, Uthoff, Jones, and Woodbury will average major minutes and finish lots of games. IMHO, it is more up in the air who else will get meaningful minutes.

Keeping in mind that a lot of the lineups will include starters playing a 2nd position, for example Jok playing both the 2 and 3, I'll throw out what I think may be the starters/bench (first 4 or 5 off the bench)

PG - MG/Sapp
Wing G- Jok/Sapp or Fleming
Wing F - Uhl/Jok or Moss/Fleming
Wing/Flex F - Uthoff/Jones
C - Woody/Jones

That's just a basic starter/bench look. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Uhl/Uthoff/Jones on the court together or Hutton/Jok/Fleming or Moss together, or the three PG together or even Uthoff/Uhl/Wagner/Jones together with a PG once in a great while. Given Fran's proclivities for letting match ups decide his line ups, there are not many looks he could throw out there that would surprise me. With the skill sets involved, there is a lot of crossover in guys that can play multiple positions, heck Uthoff could legitimately play 4 different positionsThat said, I think the above are the guys that will get the bulk of the minutes, though maybe not in those exact spots I listed.
