First thoughts looking at this...

Love the competition at LB, WR, RB and TE. The kids that win playing time out of these groups should be fun to watch.

Ideally, it would be great to see Landon, Cole and Levi shoring up the A gaps, with strong showing from Duwa and a couple incoming Fr for depth, inside and out. Hopefully good enough to free Tyler to return to the DL.

Not sure what positions they land in, but in passing situations, we need Hankins, Brents at CB and, Ojemudia, Gino, DJ Johnson on the field at the same time. I am excited to see where the 5th & 6th men in among Kaevon, John, Dallas, Moss and Sebastian.

Depth at DT, DE and O-line will be key.

Depth on both lines will be key? This could be a long season

I (try to) never question this staff's choices at OL, but if we don't see Kallenberger starting this year at OG I am going to be disappointed. He has looked quite good in limited time and appears to be our heir apparent at LT, everything points to him being one of our top 5 best OL and I can't believe he isn't able to play OG. An OL of Jackson-Kallenberger-Linderbaum-Banwart-Wirfs on paper should be scary for opposing teams.

I was thinking that Kallenberger could slide inside too. Still hoping Linderbaum can go back to D-Line, and that both Paulson's and Duwa compete with Britt and Miller to earn a spot on the 2 deeps. But yes, always the best five available, irrespective of position, as always.

Britt is coming off a torn ACL. Anything other than a RS would be a surprise for him.

In regard to the perceived length of time Rastetter has been our punter (like forever) - remember Albert Einstein explained his theory of relativity this way: compare how long a minute feels sitting besides a beautiful woman, then think about how long a minute feels sitting beside an ugly woman. ( In his defense, he has performed well on fake punts--- you might say, his best plays as a punter have been when he does not kick the ball!

Yeah, I love the idea of Linderbaum on the OL or DL, doesn't matter to me, wherever he is needed most. Kid looks like he's going to be a stud no matter what.

But I still believe that Jackson-Kallenberger-Wirfs have to be starting in some combination. I will struggle to accept anyone else has surpassed Kallenberger as one of the best 3 OL regardless of position.

Would rather see Banwart get the start at center. Don't like the idea of a player who was very recently a defensive lineman suddenly becoming THE guy in the middle of your offensive line. Besides the fact that with D line losses this off-season they may need him to switch back.

I'd prefer that too. On the other hand, I don't want Linderbaum on the O-line unless he's starting when he could end up playing a bunch on the D-Line as part of a 6-7 man rotation.

A lot of Linderbaum on that list!

If we are deep enough in the secondary, do we start to use Stone in a similar fashion as we did with Hooker? They seem like similar body styles/players.

DT is going to be a little bit of an issue imo. We really need Lattimore to step it up and have a great SR season.
Would love to see Jones figure it out or maybe be a 3rd down pass rush guy.
TE will be young but we should be fine.

I thought I saw that Stone might be one of the two that Parker was looking at for the Star position.
Unless there's a really athletic linebacker that emerges from the group, I like the idea of sticking with 2 primary LB spots and then having that hybrid position.

Thanks for the correction on Marchesse. Do you know if he is competing at SS or FS? Removed Turner, and moved Marchese from WR to SS for now. There is an ongoing debate here (and evidently on the coaching staff) where Linderbaum lands ultimately, depends on where he could play the most or is needed the most (considering other players development in either spot), so not a mistake as much as an open debate, especially now with the early exit of Nelson and Nixon, this is far from set in stone, IMHO. (I have him listed in both places, the beauty of a "Way too early list"). If you do a deeper dive, keep in mind, I am merely listing potential players at there current Hawkeyesports.com roster and other articles I have read on line. This is not intended to be a journalistic gem, obviously. More food for thought and debate. The whole point is to spark a discussion on the forum at each position, who might be a good fit here or there, since there is no direct commentary to the more official "By Position Reviews" articles posted by forum owners. Thanks for the input. Btw, having chili today, does that count as soup?

LMAO! Chili sounds really good- I am jeleous. Linderbaum is going to be starting Center next year (more than likely) and is not being debated but was made official during bowl prep. Although we have some potential departures at DT he would simply be providing depth behind Reiff and Lattimore (probably) and many have thought Center would be his best position. Fortunately for Linderbaum he is a really good football player and could thrive in at several positions, however; if you look at NFL landscape there is more of a need for good interior lineman than DT so I think this is going to be mutual beneficial for program and player. Phil Parker wasn't very happy, but he did get Micah Hyde on defense who could have been starting WR for Iowa as well.....its a give and take

I would say lets just see if TL can go Iron Man style and go both ways.

My personal hope is Kallenberger takes right tackle, and we have Wirfs at LG next to Jackson. I just imagine greatness at those 3 positions next year.

I cannot imagine Banwart isn't one of the interior starters.

I can't imagine Linderbaum not getting a "great" opportunity at C. Whether he can handle it or not is up to him.

It's easy to negatively hypothesize why Rastetter sticks...because it isn't performance. Period. It doesn't help to have a father on the Board of Regents if that's accurate according to other posters. Maybe the competition is even more suspect? Injured? I can only hope something in the punting game changes or improves for next year. Grad transfer. Style change. Player growth. Anything.

If we've identified talent as we tend to, I am not worried about d-line. It would not surprise me if Shannon and Campbell are names we will be happy with.

What about :

79 - Jack Plumb, 6-8/250, #Fr

Is he TE,Tackle, Guard?

Plumb is RT all the way. 2nd team OLine that came in for the 4th quarter vs Illinois included Plumb as the RT. I thought he was another full year of being Doyled before he would get to the2 deeps, but there he was! A good development IMHO.

Kallenberger is destined for LT. In the past, IIRC, guys like Bulaga, Reiff, Scherff all apprenticed at LG before taking over at LT.

RG seems to be the spot that is up for grabs, unless Linderbaum really takes ahold of the Center position, which will then slide Banwart over. Levi would be next man in.

2020 looks like Kallenberger, Ezra, Linderbaum, Banwart and Plumb. Jenkins, Britt, Ince and Endres May have something to say about LG by then. 3 potential maulers on the inside and 2 long-limbed quicker OTs on the outside. Naturally, I would love it if Tristan and Aleric return, but I don’t think that is too likely.

Okay Dad, It's easy to see your agenda!! How many starts does he have? Any experience? Let him make his own way, I hope he is a good one as well but lets not anoint him a starter just yet....I speak of Kallenberger that is.

Well compared to all other returning players he's at worst equal to others at guard. You can argue one of the Paulsens but in limited time he's looked overall better than either.

I'm basing my assumption on the fact that he likely is a future stud OT and likely at least one of the best 5 OL we have.

Even with all of the losses on the Dline, it still looks like a solid group. Especially when your headliner is Epenesa.

Linebackers should be much improved with a year of experience under their belt. My guess is Niemann wins the Middle and Colbert wins the weakside. I think Either Wade, Mcdonald, Jacobs, or Benson end up outside. It will be interesting to see whether we stick with the star package. Hawks have the athletes at LB to play that position in Mcdonald, Jacobs and Benson.

Secondary will be very strong with Hankins, Brents, OJ, and Stone back. It will be interesting to see who mans the other safety spot. I could see OJ making a switch, or possibly Moss.

Offensive line should be better this year. Banwart, Mark, Wirfs, and AJ will all start. I bet one of the Paulsens round out the starting lineup.

Backs should be improved too. I think Goodson gets atleast a third of the touches next year.

WR's will be a group we lean on - finally

TE's probably have a pro in Beyer and two seniors with good size. I think they will be comparable to the Fedo or Hamilton type year, in regards to production

Stanley needs to be consistent, hes already shown he can be an All-Big Ten type QB
