Answer to the Trivia Question

What lineup had the most career NC's? I don't know the answer but am curious. If I had to guess I'd say maybe 83?

how many titles did mark branch win, i know 1 of them he had a losing record going in.
Pretty sure 3. Weber kept him from being a four-timer his Junior year.

Guess I was wrong. Old age will get you every time. I was trying to remember if he won as a Soph and forgot Mollica beat him.

'86 and '97 we had five. Trying to remember if there were any others. Had six finalists both of those years, plus '91.

Branch was my favorite OSU wrestler of all time. Just a great guy. He got beat by Mollica in 1995 and Weber in 1996 so he was a two-time champ. I rooted hard for him in 1997 coming back from his knee injury and winning a great match over Brandon Slay. Slay had Branch dead for the win on a late takedown and Branch countered with the most awesome step-over and got the win. The Cedar Falls crowd LOVED it.

Gable said his coaching goal was to have 10 national champions. The closest he came was 8 wrestlers placing in the top 3 at nationals. What year was that?
You stumped me with that one Pablow. The best I remember for 8 is '86 where there were 8 in the top 5. Lots of 8 and 9 All-American years, but I can't recall 8 in the top 3.

Butchinmi already got it - 1991.
Zaputil - 2nd, Terry Brands - 2nd, Tom Brands - 1st, Troy Steiner - 2nd, Terry Steiner - 3rd, Tom Ryan, 2nd, Mark Reiland - 1st, and Bart Chelesvig - 3rd.

BTW Travis Fiser finished 6th for 9 Iowa AAs.

Branch's first title cost us a ten-year streak. We won '91-'93, and '95-2000 but his championship cost us '94. He came in with a losing record and unseeded, and we had Brinzer at #1 seed, but he came in fat and "pooped his pants" and DNP while Branch won it. 40+ point swing in the team race.

i was wondering if he had most loses for a 2 timer, wasn't that 1 of the questions

Was it "Spike" Israel?

Yes, it was Spike Israel, and ISU coach Nichols said that would be the last time Spike would referee a match at Hilton. Someone stated correctly that the wrestlers were John Bowlsby and Bob Fouts. There were :02 left on the clock when Spike stopped that match - I can't imagine that Spike actually saw the time, but rather just made that call that should have been made....as it should be - calls should be made regardless of the time on the clock, but we know that's often not done.

Maybe this is way too trivial, but...

The greatest wrestling event I ever witnessed was the Iowa-Iowa St. dual in Hilton Coliseum in 1977 (I think that was the year). Question: what was the name of the referee, and how much time was left in the heavyweight match when he stopped it for continued stalling by ISU, thereby tying the team score?

Spike Israel from NY was the referee. Called stalling quicker than any ref in history. He called stalling even faster than Gable could complain about it... No idea how much time was left when Fouts (?) was Dq'd.

I think it was Bill Zadick, who was a RSF. Kent Streicher was at 126, as was Kevin Hogan. Doug Streicher (150 lbs) had already graduated.

I thought it was Kevin Hogan that was the odd man out when Steiner dropped to 134 in 1993. But now that you mention it, I have no idea where Zadick fit in. Can we get a fact-checker in here?
