Got a couple of buddies and we like to fish different areas are the areas listed below good. Looking for somewhere to go early fall.

CATCH & RELEASE ONLY: All trout caught from the posted portion of Hewett and Ensign creeks (Clayton); McLoud Run (Linn), South Pine Creek (Winneshiek); and Waterloo Creek (Allamakee);

Brown trout caught from French Creek (Allamakee) must be released alive immediately.

I just can't get into the "catch and release" thing. Fish were meant to be caught, dressed and deep fried in either lard or peanut oil...with a side order of home fries and coleslaw. If I have to release them I am going to turn in my ultralight and pick up my golf clubs.

Got a freezer full of flounder, reds, and speckled trout. The fresh water fly fishing trips usually are all day morning to night days so none of us want to clean any.

I used to fish Coldwater Creek in Winneshiek. Not sure if it's still good. Used to pull Rainbow, Browns, and Brook out of there.

My favorites are the pan fish like those fighting pygmies in the above pic. They are bedding up now and they are plentiful. I take my ultra with 4# test and float fish. Preferred bait is the mill worm. Walk about 100 feet down the hill to my boat dock. I usually catch anywhere from 15-20 because that is as many as I have the patience to clean. I usually keep all that are palm size.

Makes for a nice morning doesn't it? I got a 3 minute walk to the gulf and when the surf is right I just wade out in the gulf and let the fun begin. A lot of guys use shrimp but I have more fun using mirrolure or berkley gulp. The best is when the trout are hitting the top water. A 20" speckled trout is a lot of fun and makes for a nice dinner - pan fried.

I've fished Waterloo and French and the Waterloo would be your best bet if you are using your creek rod fishing from the bank. Otherwiseboth would be suitable if wading.

If you are fishing in Waterloo I would suggest packing heat and rocking Kevlar. Sorry Slieb and Wahawks.

Waterloo is excellent for trophy browns. Catch and release is the primary reason why. It is also only about a 10 minute drive to North and South Bear. Fly fishing would work better on South Bear. I grew up 5 minutes from Coldwater so it will always be my favorite stream.

My fish of choice...you guys got any of these beauties in Iowa?

All over the place, but the best examples are found in the myriad of farm ponds across Iowa. Easily my favorite species to fish for as far as eating is concerned. Bluegills/relatives etc for breakfast is awesome. Crappies too. Iowa's upper Mississippi area used to be chock full of them but it seems like the numbers have been down for a couple decades compared to what I grew up with. Silting is what I believe the cause. The backwaters just ain't as deep as they used to be, eliminating wintering areas.

They can be found...just not everywhere in size and numbers like they used to be.

Here ya' go guys. For under two million bucks you can have 3 of your own private trout streams in the heart of northeast Iowa. And since you would own them you could always use dynamite if you suck at fly fishing!
phpThumb.php

Remarks: Rare opportunity to own a sportsman's dream. Prairie Song Farm (PSF) is nationally recognized for its full mile of outstanding trout streams, prairie and wooded recreational land, & top-end log home. PSF is so much more than a home and piece of land - it is AN EXPERIENCE! It's the only property in IA, MN, WI and IL with 3 different trout streams. The owner has invested substantially in a decade of ground-breaking stream and tallgrass prairie and oak savanna restoration. PSF has been featured in the NY Times & numerous national fly fishing magazines. Twin Cities Trout Unlimited coined it 'the best mile of trout fishing in the Midwest'. A hunter's dream with thriving wildlife populations including trophy deer and turkey. Watch the eagles and more than 135 different species of birds. Geo-thermal heat/air. Top of the line security and remote communication systems. Outstanding quality construction, custom cabinetry, gourmet kitchen. Guest quarters. Qualified buyers only.

Only about 2 million short or I would go for it.

I was going to buy that place (cash, of course) but my trophy supermodel of a wife prefers fly fishing topless and since it's in Iowa that's only doable about 3 months a year. Sigh.

I had to settle for a dinky little chalet on the French Riviera.

I've been by that place and it would be awesome to live there. My parents live in Clayton Co and to me that's almost heaven.

Yup. And I'm a guy who grew up on carp and bullheads.

Carp put up a great fight but aren't edible...as to the bullhead twist off the head, remove the mud vein, skin it and you have a wonderful fish just perfect for the grease...caught a many of them in the creeks around my home as a boy.

You might want to reconsider the statement tthat carp aren't edible. Some of the best fish I have eaten is smoked carp.

When they are scored correctly and fried correctly, they are delicious. Like you said, great smoked also.

Recipe for smoked carp
1. Clean carp
2. Place carp on slab of cedar wood
3. Smoke over hickory coals until flaky
4. Gently remove carp from cedar board
5. Throw carp into the woods
6. Eat cedar board
