Nunge is another good example of how success breeds success. I don't know if 2012/13 Fran McCaffery and the University of Iowa attract the Cook's, Nunge, Garza's of the world. I mean, those 2013 recruits (of which we had only room for Jok.) were looking at Fran's second year just finishing with a trip to the NIT after Iowa had for several years been stinking up the Big Ten. That was the summer of 2012 that we were landing Jok.
But when you think about it. It was the moment in time when Iowa, though hardly anyone knew it or could have predicted it, Iowa had just enjoyed the sophomore services of a kid named Marble who would go on to become First Team All Big Ten. And we had another one, a freshman named White that nobody predicted him back door dunking and free throw shooting his way to First Team All Big Ten.
Summer of 2012. I've said before that the year that doesn't get talked about much, 2011/12, in hindsight was the year that marked a one season rebuild from the brink of permanent (as it gets) cellar dwellers, to competitive, post season play, Big Ten worthy, basketball. And beyond just finishing 8-10 in the league, which was pretty dang good compared to the past four years, we had also landed a five person recruiting class that included local guys Woody and Gesell (I'll call him local), and Clemmons...and a couple more. And we had done something to make it worth losing a year of eligibility and have to spend his own dime for a year, for Uthoff to return home. (Who became our third First Team All Big Ten player in three years in a row!)
What the heck was it? I think we might belatedly recognize that indeed Fran McCaffery and Staff could recruit a little bit. Summer of 2012.
And we were just finishing a recruitment of one Peter Jok. We had stayed committed to him throughout an injury riddled high school career. And we all know what he became. Say it with me, First Team All Big Ten. Four in a row! A streak we might see end this coming season, not for lack of talent but because our top guys are so young and often the league choses upperclassmen. On the other hand, one never knows.
So what happens between then and now? The state of Iowa goes into a talent drought. And looking back is it fair to say that with guys like White, Olaseni, Uthoff, Woodbury, Gesell, Clemmons, a long list of players who were playing and had plenty of eligibility, it was going to be tough to show recruits where they would fit in? And heck, even that first year with the 2012 class we missed the NCAA Tournament by one Ted Valentine officiated game. And the next year we barely made it.
And people were calling our 2014 class a bust. Some were calling for an assistant to be canned. I don't know but looking back is it more plain now that it was then that recruiting the 2014 class was going to be tough? I don't want to make this about fan patience or over-reaction. So I'll skip the part about presumptions of talent or lack of it and how even a walk-on can turn out to be a game changer.
The point is, that summer of 2012 when we were completing the recruitment of Peter Jok, we didn't know it but we'd already, in Fran's second true recruiting class, filled the team with the talent to win 89 games in the next four years. To enjoy a record of 42-30 in the Big Ten!! To finish second in the NIT followed by three invites to the NCAA!
Meanwhile, yeah I think that established the kind of success it takes to land a Cook, Nunge and Garza! And dang if Fran isn't still finding those players, like Bohannon, that he modestly calls "under recruited". And he's got the state in his pocket and guess what, the drought is OVER boys and girls. Instate talent in the coming years is solid, or better than solid. And THANK YOU to programs like Barnstormers who are proving to be exactly what we needed. Clean, honest AAU programs run by guys who know how to develop players and have those players best interests at heart.
If one is wondering where we are headed, while looking at promising highlights of Garza, Nunge and Connor. Think about this. Summer of 2012 we had a promising group of freshmen coming in. And dang but weren't we already placing them in starting roles right out of the gate. Three of 'em, Woodbury, Gesell, and Clemmons for as I recall half the season or 14 games. And not much by way of older guys to learn from. It was like, "Welcome, this is your job now. Training? Oh, you'll get plenty of that in the games."
Today? Yes our new guys have the kind of talent that one or two might even break into a starting role. But it sure won't be handed to them!
And that is how and why success breeds success. On the backs of players who came before, this Iowa program has risen to a level where we are NOT MISSING (same coaching staff...had to toss that in.) on some special recruits. Our influence has grown in the recruiting world. And I think about programs like Illinois, Indiana, probably soon Nebraska, starting over. Meanwhile if this program was built of muscle we would be a brick s#!t house!
It's great to be a Hawkeye fan! We're baaaaaaack!
