Any updates on Nunge and Pemsl's progress?

I feel like Numge has the most upside but I'm looking forward to Pemsyl getting more crafty and being ambidextrous inside. It seemed like Pemsl was scouted pretty heavily as the year went on and his signature moves we're shut down. Plus he's not an Above the Rim player. Or at least he wasn't before he dropped weight.

Nunge was pretty shaky as a freshman, as I expected. His defense was horrible - although he wanted to play the 3, he has no where the lateral quickness needed to do so. That he is putting on weight (hopefully muscle!) hopefully means he is trying to bulk up to play the 4/5 positions. I think he is a lot better suited for that.

Nunge has the style of someone like Jarrod Uthoff. Not saying he’ll be s 20 ppg, but similar build and skill set.

I think he actually started part of his first season, didn’t he? But Luka replaced him after he made a few three pointers, coming off the bench. I hope he’ll be a force to reckon with under the basket.
Pemsl is a spark plug - just a great addition to the team. I remember reading about him when he was in high school. If he wasn’t injured, he would have been a four star recruit.

Nunge was pretty weak in his upper body, and played predominately at the 3/4 IIRC. He started alongside Garza and Cook in a number of games.

Nunge's skills and build reminded me somewhat of Uthoff. I'm glad he was able bulk up though, because I think he lacked the wiry strength of Uthoff (at least the post redshirt Uthoff).

If the coach plays them in their right position that would be good start.
Sometimes kids just need to experience the bad to know in their hearts where they should be. In other words, you have to let them fail or ride the bench so that they realize what they need to do.

What was Nunge’s shooting percentage last year? I know he has the potential to shoot well and having some range will help him inside while he develops his skills there. Tougher to guard a guy who can shoot.

Nunge needs to be a 5
Fran didn't really have too much talent at the 2/3. Ellingson wasn't a B1G starter, and Moss was a one dimensional player that was also an inconsistent scorer. Next year we should be much stronger at those positions with Toussaint, Fredrick, and Patrick in the mix with Wieskamp and Moss. I think Pemsl has to be a 4/5 unless he unleashes some of that craftiness he displayed as a freshman.

Nunge had some nice defensive timing. I could see him being a decent shot blocker next year. He lacks lateral quickness, but I thought he showed signs of being a shot blocker.

Isn't Nunge like 6-10 in height? He definitely needs to be a threat down in the post and then sneak outside occasionally and pop the unexpected three, kinda like Garza. I just hope he can rebound and protect the rim.

I thought Woodbury was a pretty decent player but man....he had no "hops." I hope Nunge is different in that aspect. Very anxious to see how he does!

Fran recruits Syracuse 2-3 zone type guys. He should just defend that way. Commit.

Syracuse zone guys are all long and athletic and could play good man-to-man. The syracuse zone also usually has a shot blocker at center. The last Iowa center that fit the mold of Syracuse type player was Olesani. I'd say White and uthoff were also the type of players Syracuse could play. The Dolezal kid for Syracuse is a bit in the mold of Uthoff/White.

Fran should commit to getting players with offense that also are interested in defense. This JoeT sounds like a start. We already have JoeW...so that is 2 players that can play defense.

Nunge is close to 7'0--he's taller than Garza and better athlete. Nunge can block some shots. I think he was a little soft at finishing inside as Freshman. There was interview with him in Iowa City press citizen. I think he was working on getting a quicker release on his 3 and he had put on 20lbs of weight. He can be a better post defender than Garza if he puts in the effort.

Nunge IMO, did not want to mix it up in the paint. Maybe it was a strength issue or a cajones issue. He seemed to spend a lot of time in the corner waiting for a three.

I'd like to see his play somewhat imitate that of Haarms (Purdue) - he's tall and lanky and battles down low. Watching him now and he's pretty impressive. Has an impact on both sides of the floor.

I think played the outside game in high school. Would be a BIG change to play more perimeter at the HS level and then switch to inside game at the B1G level. Kid has grown a ton in the last couple years, at least height wise, too so he has to learn what his body can do. I believe he was 6’8” or 6’9” when he committed to Iowa and is now about 7’.

I remember the same. Hopefully he's been receiving the appropriate coaching since last year because that cannot be his game.

Hey, what's up with Purdue and centers with an "H"? Hammons, Haas, and Haarms.

Exactly. I see Nunge being more of a skilled 5 like Frank Kaminski as opposed to a Uthoff outside/in player. He definitely needs to be able to defend the 5. He is a much better shot blocker than Garza, which would fill a need for us.

Nunge was forced to play out of position his first year, and it made him look worse than he was. I see him as having the potential to be a Kamisky-type, who could play 4 or 5. No I am not predicting he will be as good as Frank Kaminsky, but I think he has a similar skill set and body.

Nunge wanted and asked to play the 3 - no one forced him.

His last 2 years in HS he averaged about 3.6 blocks per game. That's something we haven't really had, on defense, since Olaseni and Uthoff graduated.
