I had a couple of classes with him at Cumberland University when I quit the private schools to get my public school teaching credential. He seemed like a good guy but very quiet. Not that stellar of a player but he obviously became a quality college coach. He turned down the Iowa job I think. He is from Davenport I believe.

He lobbied hard and interviewed for the Iowa job but ultimately they hired Rick Heller. Kind of a sad situation for a guy who built APSU into a pretty decent program.

Played for legendary NAIA coach Woody Hunt at Cumberland. He is both the all time winningest coach at the Peay and in the OVC. He recruited a kid who played basketball for me to play baseball at APSU. He made all OVC. Yes it is a really bad situation. I think Gary was hoping the school would let him off with a reprimand and a suspension but sadly it didn't work out that way.
