Update we received today with new rules beginning January 8. 2022.

I have to admit that I was taken by surprise by this considering that they don't even require negative test in order to enter the country. But I do know after having been there this summer that they are taking the virus very seriously.

*Important Update* Starting 8 January 2022 hotels, restaurants, bars, casinos, shops, museums, art and dance academies, gymnasiums, resorts, and adventure tourism may admit only persons who are verifiably fully-vaccinated (Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca y Janssen). This must be verified by means of a QR code or the printed vaccination certificate. This requirement applies to all patrons 12 years of age and older.

Essential services such as supermarkets and pharmacies will not require proof of vaccination.

Exceptions to the presentation of the QR code of the vaccination certificate to enter commercial establishments are as follows:
  1. Children under 12 years of age.
  2. Tourists who have a medical condition, duly accredited, that makes it impossible to apply any vaccine approved by the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica.

That's too bad. I actually wanted to visit Costa Rica.
Oh well, I guess there are plenty of other destinations.
It's not that special. Plenty of other better places to visit. We stayed on a beach for a week and by Arenal volcano for a few days. The hot baths were the only cool resorts there and that was in the middle of the country.

3boysmom, Do you think this will continue with other major countries? Have a 3 week Iceland, Ireland and England trip planned next summer and kids are not vaxed. England held off on passport for now. Ughh, may have to cancel damn trip again or go to a different country. Hope the tourism industry dies there if they keep up these rules.

My daughter (senior at Luther...and I've included a pic) is going with a group of students in January for their J-term. She and the rest of the group are fully vaccinated. They're staying at Punta Mona. It's an off-the-grid farm and educational retreat center. I called it a commune and she got pissed.

I'm assuming vaccinating the kids isn't an option. If not, I would reschedule. The issue being not only the vaccine requirement but the work around of a recovery certificate having a shelf life of 6 months in at least some places. The UK has this guidance updated today: Non-vaccinated travelers to the UK from green list countries must do a pre-departure negative test and book and pay for a day two and day eight PCR test. Non-vaccinated green travelers must also quarantine at home, or at the place they are staying, for 10 days. So if you have to quarantine what is the point?

How to tell me that you’ve never been to Costa Rica, without actually saying you’ve never been to Costa Rica…

So my intent with that post was to freak 3 boys mom out. I didn't even read her post though.

Thanks so much for the info, much appreciated.

It’s an online community where reading is kinda fundamental. Maybe try that approach the next time?

Stayed at the Westin in Playa in 2019 for a Presidents Club. It was OK. I prefer Cozumel.

Speaking of wife and I are going to Riviera Maya in 3 weeks. Any rumblings of any changes there that you've heard of?
I haven't heard of any kinds of changes in the works. Right now all of the tourist locations are a green on their traffic light system so hopefully that stays the same. A few months ago they were orange and were still open.

Or, you can just get vaccinated.

How old are the kids?

Are you not going because they dont require a negative test and vaccination to go there, or because they DO require vaccination to do anything once you're there?

Curious straw to break the camels back is all.

I'm not going to spend that kind of money, for what may be a once in a lifetime trip to a place I've wanted to go, only to face restrictions, closures and hassles at every turn. The experience would be ruined.

Went to Europe last month, restrictions s at every turn, and it was a fantastic trip, fwiw. Certainly go somewhere else, but restrictions won't necessarily dampen your vacation at all.

Capital.....why in God's name would you take unvaxed children to place where the virus is a real national concern? (this is based of current/today information, only) Do you think they are immune from C19 and won't get sick?
I mean, they are your kids but to me I would NEVER take my unvaxed child into the middle of a place where they are having an epidemic. Of course, we both know that by summer this will change.....But you have plenty of time to get the kids protected....

Appreciate the concern and may vax kids later on but don't look at this as a big risk to our teenagers. Wife "no pic" and I are both vaxxed but don't have booster yet. Our physicians don't even have their children vaxxed and have spoken to plenty of neighbor physicians as well that haven't and stated there isn't enough data available to make that decision for children and now seeing that Omicron is not protected and constantly needing another booster with a never ending cycle. Ever since this hit it hasn't slowed us down we've traveled frequently around the states and to Mexico. Mexico is only place you can go now that isn't a hassle.
