AP Poll History...Iowa now 19th most appearances all time

Never would have thought that Purdue, with all of their history, would have never been ranked #1. If I recall correctly they are up with the elite in conference(3x as many titles as us), but struggle to replicate that success in the NCAA Tourney(1 fewer Final Four than us).

Iowa was close to top 15 program historically turn of century.

We went over this in different threads before. I personally think that on Y2K eve we were a top 25 program historically and arguably top 20, but probably not top 15.

Either way, there is no way that Iowa would be considered a better program historically than Purdue, even back in 2000. They’ve won about 1/5th of the possible Big Ten titles ever. We’ve only won 2 more titles than Chicago and they haven’t been in the conference in well over half a century.

Really interesting.
Especially when you see teams like Wisconsin and Gonzaga that far down the list...... They have been ranked a lot in the last 20 years, but probably not much before that.

That'd be interesting to see individual teams yearly bar graph of rankings by week.

Iowa would have a plunge in rankings during TL's years.

Right around the time that Dr. Tom was forced out was when Wisconsin had their resurgence. First at the end of Bennett's time and then with the Bo Ryan hire. They basically filled the void that we vacated and then built on it. They did what we hoped Alford would do when we hired him. "Take us to the next level".

If we had swapped the last 20 years with them(13 more tourney appearances, 3 more final fours, and 5 more Big Ten titles), we'd be considered up on that top 10-15 all time program level instead of where we are now.

We were 15 through 2000. If you follow the link, the page allows you to select a time frame. Between 1949 and 2000, we were #15 on the list. We were behind only Indiana, Michigan and Illinois in the Big Ten. Michigan State was #30.

MSU, Maryland, OSU and Purdue have moved in front of us on this list since 2000.

As of last weeks poll, add another week cushion now over Purdue and closing on #18/#19..

That’s a lot to write on a banner but I still think we should print it up and hang it in CHA.

Maybe shorten it to: if the last 20 years happened completely differently, our program would be better than it is!

It’s impressive either way though.

How about this one: No Final Fours or Conference titles since 1979 or even a sweet sixteen since 1999, but some sportswriters thought we were pretty good a lot. Yaaayyyy!!!

I agree with you, I was just impressed initially with my OP where Iowa's standing still is overall from the AP poll history perspective, even with the big gaps of futility. Shows the tradition and history the program has and we are on a pretty nice run now with Fran, considering where we were prior to that.
