There are at least 439 American citizens still in Afghanistan, a senior Pentagon official told Congress on Tuesday, upping the number from what the administration told lawmakers just last week.
President Joe Biden has been criticized for not making good on his promise to keep U.S. forces in Afghanistan until every American who wanted to leave was able to get out of the country. During an August interview with ABC News, the president declared, “If there’s American citizens left, we’re gonna stay to get them all out.”
Sen. Ben Sasse, Nebraska Republican, said Congress was given a total figure last week of 363 Americans.
He called the Americans left behind a “slow-motion hostage crisis,” and said President Biden has shown an indifference to the life-or-death situation these Americans face.
Mr. Sasse accused the administration of “gaslighting the public” by lowballing the numbers. “The president needs to take responsibility and get our people home,” the senator said.
