Interesting thought my wife had. It does seem like we have less serial killers now, and obviously more and more school shooters. Are the same people who used the age into serial killing now going off earlier at school? Who knows. I found the thought intriguing.

It's just so much harder to be a serial killer now than it was in the past. I wonder how many would be serial killers just end up getting caught much sooner.

For the most part serial killers were concerned about not getting caught and staying alive. They would do stuff like revisit crime scenes, take keepsakes, and do depraved stuff like rape the necks of decapitated heads.

There is probably some overlap between the two groups though. Maybe a drive for notoriety. Oh and like killing people in general.

This.

There are cameras everywhere now. Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy probably would have been caught much earlier if they lived today.

I agree, it would be much harder to continually escape detection these days with personal electronics and surveillance cams everywhere, etc.

I kid you not...there is a case that I know a lot about that is working its way through the courts in eastern Iowa now that very potentially included at least one of the perpetrators who would probably have killed others in the future had he not been caught very quickly after his first murder.

If you try to imagine a day without the personal electronics and cams, etc, he may still be at large. Yikes!

Serial killers focused on not being caught and out smarting the police. Most school shooters end up taking their own life. There might be overlaps on a Venn diagram, but the goals seem different.
