I think when Cook is back, Uhl will play much less.

And Bohannon keeps getting better; not sure if he will ever let go of the starting PG position.

What's killing this team right now is how little production they are getting from the '14 and '15 recruiting classes. This has left huge holes for this year's team to overcome. If they could be getting consistent solid production from 2-3 of these guys the way these frosh are playing and growing right now we could be talking about the dance and competing for a top 4-5 spot in the B1G. Crazy to think the '14 & '15 classes had something like 8 ships between them.

Wagner is in jeopardy also of losing out because he has no position because of his limited shooting ability and he's 6'5" in reality.

As I posted before Wagner would have been an ideal red shirt this year in order to spend a year developing a reliable outside shot and improved ball handling. He needs to be a 3 man to make it. Right now we have too many 4's with Cook, Baer, Wagner & Pemsl to get them all on the court and yet no one of them can adequately play the 3 either from limitations defensively or offensively.

Really like what I see out of Moss JBO and Pen. Wagner seems to have regressed and Williams seems more natural as a 2 guard. He can handle the ball but I think he would be better served on the move.

Good point. Uhl's lack of contributions are really hurting this team. He was supposed to be able to shoot and score a little, but he doesn't even look at the basket. Williams is not a PG and needs to move to a 3 with the second group. Wagner gives maximum effort, but is a blocked shot waiting to happen offensively. Dailey and Kriener cannot do any worse than the aforementioned players.

Fran needs to suck it up and stick with the guys getting it done for longer stretches. He is a bigger momentum killer than the opposition. Also not a fan of applying pressure with the second unit due to their lack of athleticism. We get beat like a drum and give up wide open 3's or layups about 80% of the time. This might work against Rio Grande Valley State, but not against well coached teams with smart guards.

Wagner just doesn't get the time to settle down. A mistake and he's out.
Uhl is a black hole right now offensively.
Why can't he play JBo and Williams at the same time? Williams defense was offensive last night to say the least. He can't keep a guy in front of him but unfortunately he's not the only one.
I think Kriener at least deserves a little more time.

3 things I noticed from last night that costed Iowa the game:

1. Our defense on the perimeter is not good, Every single player closes out with a hand down and not in the face of the shooter. Last night I counted at least 5 times where guys went out half @ssed with a hand at the shooters waist? What good does that do?

2. Boxing out/Hustle plays. Seems we lost that battle. We gave up 2 key offensive rebounds when we were leading by 1. If we secure that rebound, instead of giving ND two more cracks at it, we could of gone up by more. A lot of loose balls ended up in ND's hands.

3. Shot selection, I thought we took some good shots, but when we got down by 9-12pts then we started to rush our shot selection. Jok especially forced it, but he was coming off a 42pt game. I thought Pemsl, Bohannon, and Moss played good last night. I really wish Wagner had a jump shot, he could be a HUGE mis-match if he could shoot the 15 footer.

Overall I thought the game played out the way I expected it. Young team had some mental lapses on the defensive end and overall the more veteran ball club made the 50/50 plays to win it. The guys grew up and I think you will see them continue to improve. I hope we can get something out of our bench moving forward (Uhl, Williams, etc.) Need guys to come in and contribute 4-5 points and not have a drop off when the starters are out.

First the minutes did go down in the game last night.
Bohannon 32 to CW 15
Pemsl 23 to Uhl 16
so most of you GOT what you want...more Bohannon/Pemsl less Williams/Uhl.

BUT...when playing freshman in "long stretches" as was suggested.. you increase the chances of foul trouble but more so..they can get tired. A tired Pemsl on the floor is not a good thing. We still need minutes from Uhl & Williams...even if its to rest someone.

I'm not good at pitting one teammate vs another...that's Fran's job. Someone suggested he suck it up...my gosh did he not start JBO & Pemsl?....did he not play both more minutes than CW & Uhl? OK...you get want you want & then suggest he suck it up?....what's that?

The game (that's A game) Bohannon & Pemsl had last night was fantastic...I hope both keep it up.
I also hope CW & Uhl can give productive minutes because with Cook out...we need both of them.
I also liked when Fran had CW & JBO in the game together at least at one point...course he mentioned before the season started that both could see time together...nothing new there.

I thought last night that both Moss (24 min) & Ellingson (19 min) played solid.

Baer was our only rebounder (6&6) for 12....
Pemsl needs to do a lot better than (0-2) 2 rebounds in 23 minutes isn't going to cut it.

we don't win when Jok goes 4 for 20...I know his shoulder is not 100%. As Fran said afterwards those shots were going in against Memphis. Its also clear from Fran's comments he wants to see PJ look for his teammates more.

Uhl seems like a good young man, and I see more effort out of him, but if he can't make layups, then he doesn't deserve PT. He seems to be a case of a guy gifted with a lot of athleticism but no basketball skills. Pemsl on other hand is crafty and has post moves. He needs to play a lot. Hopefully he starts to value rebounding/defense.

What is a lot? Pemsl is not a 30 min guy...especially a freshman his size with some knee history...you over play Pemsl (while Cook is out)...you won't see the Pemsl you saw last night. I know Uhl/Wagner are not the fan favorites right now..they still need & will play some minutes. I also have no problem seeing Kriener get in the mix (especially while Cook is out).

I'm not knocking Pemsl ...he did have a good matchup against Colson & the ND center who basically did nothing but foul. Lets see how he does when the matchup is not as favorable. I do like Pemsl's fire...he didn't back down (wasn't afraid to give it right back)......something that just doesn't seem to be in Dom's DNA. The combination of Pemsl & Cook together has a lot of promise...too bad its going to be 3-4 weeks to see it.

Pemsl took advantage of the defensive matchup on him, which is exactly what you'd hope a guy would do. On the defensive end, he was less than stellar. Bohannon was hitting, which was great to see. He handled the ball adequately. He also struggled on the defensive end keeping his man in front of him and closing out on shooters.

The absence of defense and rebounding is a continuing struggle. It doesn't have to be great. But, it does need to be better than it is now to get wins.

Oh, he has a position, and bowl practice will be starting soon.

Give me the guys who aren't afraid and will compete. Bohannon had 7 assists and 1 turnover. I'll take that ratio all day, everyday. We'll have a tough time beating anybody with our bench guys contributing virtually nothing.

Bohannon has significant defensive deficiencies at this level, but he's hardly alone in that. That he gives them an outside threat to score and can handle the ball adequately puts him well ahead of Williams at present.
