Per the Washington post article it sounds like you have to be above the 15th percentile on the ASVAB test. Only the 15th percentile? Sounds like a pretty low bar. But maybe the questions are really hard.

It's a slow down and calculate type of test. What's the √ of 27/3? Doing it quickly, you may choose 9, but slow down and see the additional math, and you get to 3. Also, do I get a calculator or do I just have to show my work? 10% of a number is easy to get to. 12% is usually a little more difficult to do in the head.

Kind of similar to how Microsoft words their exams. Not as tricky, but slow down and reread it

I didn’t say that poverty and low intelligence were exclusive to each other. I said it’s either or typically. If your parents are gonna pay your way through college, would you join the military? Calm down guy.

The USASOC team I led had enlisted guys with incredible intelligence. One MBA, one PhD and two lawyers (as soon as they got out and attended premier law schools), nearly all had college degrees or some college. I had a M.S. at the time, and I wasn't the smartest by a long shot. It's incredibly hard to meet the entrance requirements to just join the military, definitely not a magnet for lower intelligence. To get promoted to E7, they now want you to have a 4-yr degree.

Many were from affluent and middle class families. It's a media misnomer that poor and uneducated enter the military.

Yes. I started out in a parachute infantry battalion in the 82d Airborne Division. Many, many with degrees or some college, many from extreme wealth. Some just want to serve, even if they are rich and brilliant. Your assertion is just wrong, that's all.

I think it’s dangerous to over-generalize the composition/intelligence of the U.S. military. Based on my knowledge/experience of knowing numerous people in the military, I would estimate it’s a 60/40 split between high school graduates and those with higher education degrees.

I realize that's a difficult distinction for some.
