The Arizona secretary of state’s office, which oversees elections, has received a grand jury subpoena for communications with former president Donald Trump, his campaign, and a long list of aides and allies, The Washington Post confirmed Thursday.
Special counsel Jack Smith has sent subpoenas to local officials in Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin — among the states central to Trump’s effort to remain in power after his loss in the 2020 election. They are among the first known subpoenas issued since Attorney General Merrick Garland named Smith to oversee Trump-related aspects of the inquiry of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and the probe of the former president’s potential mishandling of classified documents after leaving office.
The Arizona secretary of state received the Nov. 22 subpoena on Dec. 2, said a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly. It was similar to requests made to other officials, including those in Maricopa County who were targeted by Trump and his allies to either delay certification of the 2020 election or reverse the results. Arizona elections officials are reviewing records to determine whether they have records that fall under the parameters of the subpoena.
