They are so bad. And so pathetic that corporate chains like Lee use them.

Check out these "stories" from two different Lee papers about the same game between UTHS and Geneseo. It is so blindingly obvious they are written by a computer and not a human.

Version 1:

East Moline United Township stops Geneseo in snug affair 47-40

East Moline United Township walked the high-wire before edging Geneseo 47-40 for an Illinois girls basketball victory on December 15.

East Moline United Township nets nifty victory over Geneseo 47-40

It wasn't pretty, gut-tough wins usually aren't, but East Moline United Township wasn't going for style points. A victory will do, and it was earned 47-40 over Geneseo in Illinois girls basketball on December 15.

Last season, Geneseo and East Moline United Township squared off with December 16, 2021 at Geneseo High School last season. For more, click here.

It's basically an algorithm that uses an online thesaurus and apparently a dictionary of sports writing cliches to form semi-coherent news nuggets.

Here are a couple more I've come across:

East Moline United Township comes from behind to stop Davenport West 72-55

East Moline United Township fell behind but rebounded in the first quarter of a 72-55 win over Davenport West for an Iowa boys basketball victory on December 17.

Davenport West authored a promising start, taking an 18-16 advantage over East Moline United Township at the end of the first quarter.
A half tie at 31-31 allowed for a respite as both teams looked to regroup in the locker room.

East Moline United Township jumped ahead of Davenport West 51-42 as the fourth quarter started.
The Panthers' train of momentum chugged along the fourth-quarter tracks with a 21-13 points differential.

Bushnell-Prairie City holds off Woodhull Al/Cam 74-65

Saturday's outing turned into an endurance test that Bushnell-Prairie City passed in a 74-65 victory at Woodhull Al/Cam's expense in an Illinois boys basketball matchup.

This AI, while it is amazing technology, is going to be a huge problem. The next iteration of OpenAI is supposed to be able to site sources for papers. As it is now, AI written papers show up as "unique" on services like turnitin.com. It is going to force teachers to ditch the computers, pull out pencils and paper, and force kids to write everything out by hand again, which is actuall probably a good thing. I think half the problems with modern education can be blamed on the drive to go digital with everything and giving kids ways to get correct answers without actually knowing or learning anything.

But it is going to affect other jobs as well. Just wait until you get your AI driven public attorney. Hell, in many cases the AI lawyer may be better than the overworked and underpaid public defender. It could even hit the medical field as AI could (actually it already is) be used to diagnose patients and recommend paths of treatment. This is the future stuff that is really going to start the "The Robots took my job". That's usually the last step before "The humans are killing the robots" and then "The robots are fighting back" and then....well, we all know how that ends.

This AI very clearly did not read Orwell's Politics and the English Language as assigned in a creative writing elective.
I just asked ChatGPT to give a summary of Orwell's Politics and the English language as assigned in a creative writing elective:

"In "Politics and the English Language," George Orwell argues that the decline of the English language is tied to the decline of political thought. He asserts that political language has become vague, meaningless, and manipulative, and that this is a result of the political conditions of the time.

Orwell argues that political language is often used to obscure the truth and obscure the intentions of those who use it. He gives examples of how politicians and others use language to deceive and manipulate, such as by using euphemisms to describe unpleasant or controversial things in a more palatable way. He also discusses the use of jargon and technical terms to make ideas seem more complex and sophisticated than they really are, and the use of cliches and meaningless words to fill space and make it seem like the speaker is saying something important.

Orwell believes that the deterioration of the English language is a reflection of the deterioration of political thought and action. He argues that the way we use language shapes our thoughts and our understanding of the world, and that the degradation of language leads to a degradation of thought and political action.

Overall, Orwell's "Politics and the English Language" is a warning about the dangers of using language to deceive and manipulate, and the importance of using clear a
nd precise language to communicate effectively and think critically."

Not bad for a computer. This would have been extremely hand in my college years.

But wouldn't you have been robbed of the shame of learning that everything you'd put effort into writing since you were a little kid was actually embarrassing and pathetic?

Maybe this same AI can write your resume when your overlords realize it is cheaper than paying you and they initiate layoffs.

Later, the same AI could write your obituary after you succumb to depression being replaced by computers so you eat some mushrooms growing in a ditch outside a Moline payday loan store and proceed to the future Bison Bridge where you aggressively choke yourself with a rope while fapping to the bison and slip on your ejaculate and inadvertently hang yourself over the ol’ Muddy Miss!

That is the plan.

I heard a bit on The Score a week or two ago about a guy who fed a bunch of bots Hallmark TV movies and then had them spit out their own script. It was hilarious, but not comforting about where the world is headed.

“ Tuesdays with the Terminator “ kind of has a nice ring to it…

After Brian Ferentz’s offense was disemboweled in the first quarter, he
Verbally raped the offensive line, except for the tight ends. It must have worked as they opened up Kentucky’s defense like Stormy Daniels legs when she sees a crisp 20. Unfortunately the thrusting last drive went limp and the Hawks were denied unloading in the muddy end zone. I’ll be back…

Sounds like a fun way to go out

ChatGPT created story:

East Moline United Township edges out Geneseo in thrilling 47-40 basketball matchup

The East Moline United Township Panthers and the Geneseo Maple Leafs faced off in a highly anticipated basketball matchup on Friday night. The Panthers, led by senior guard Tyler Smith, came out strong in the first quarter, taking an early lead. But the Maple Leafs fought back, led by junior forward Lily Johnson, who scored a game-high 20 points.

The Panthers maintained their lead throughout the second and third quarters, but the Maple Leafs kept it close, trailing by only a few points. In the fourth quarter, the Maple Leafs made a comeback, closing the gap to just one point with only a few minutes left in the game.

But the Panthers held on, thanks in part to some key free throws from Smith, who finished the game with 18 points. The Panthers ultimately won the game 47-40, much to the delight of their fans.

The Panthers will look to continue their winning streak as they face off against the Rock Island Rocks next week, while the Maple Leafs will look to bounce back as they take on the Moline Maroons. It promises to be another exciting matchup in the always-competitive Iowa high school basketball scene

Was this generated by AI?

One of the guys who I coached baseball with through the years started keeping the team stats on one of the online "score book" programs (there are a couple, I don't remember which he was using). It would "write" an article about the game based on what got keyed into the "book" as the game progressed. It was pretty easy to tell that it was AI-driven, especially after you'd read the "articles" a time or two.

The newest versions of this AI stuff is indistinguishable from a human author, other than the AI stuff won't have statements from coaches and players. So, reporters will be relegated to just interviewing people and uploading that into the database.

Gamechanger app does this. We used it for our little league district team. It was odd seeing the story generated by the AI, was just like an MLB story, but with the same weight applied to little kids.

I think it was Gamechanger that he used. Some of it was ok, but parts of it laughably bad

It‘s a fun little twist in GameChanger for a sporting event attended by literal dozens of people watching their kids. It’s a lot less cute when media chains are using it for actual publishing.

That said, here’s a gem of a tweet in which Bleacher Nation’s Michael Cerami asked ChatGPT to write a poem about peeing in the troughs at Wrigley Field.

I feel like they're getting worse:

My local news website is experimenting with AI and transparently publishing "examples" of their output for viewer/reader comment. It's sort of an interesting exercise - the AI stuff is usually tellingly generically written and therefore incredibly bland and uninteresting, but probably not horrible as a tool for either "basic summaries" of events or as a "starting point" for a reporter to edit from (which probably raises some interesting copyright issues). They even had users suggest some things like "write a story about x in a noir style", which it did, again in a generically uninteresting way.

That will change as time, and critiques, continue to refine the code. The next iteration of OpenAI is supposed to be able to site sources. Schools are going to have to remove computers from the classroom to ensure that students are actually doing the work themselves. That may not be a bad thing, really.

Indeed. In fact, in the program that the local news outlet was running, you could set parameters to enable the AI to take varying degrees of stylistic "risk". And the work products did indeed improve.
