So how does that work are the old asst. coach’s still on staff or does the new coach have the say who stays or leaves? I would like it that Gatens would be able to stay.

I would assume that the new coach wants to bring a majority of his own team. That being said, i like the Idea of Gatens being retained… so long as he has proved he is worth retaining.

I think all the coaches except Gatens and Denning (not a coach, director of Ops) were let go with Fran. BMC said hes bringing 3(?) guys with him from Drake. I think that leaves an opening for one more.

I have seen a rumor somewhere that Ben wants to bring on a friend of his now an assistant coach at Texas Tech. It seems to me Ben wants a complete reset from the Fran era, meaning Gatens is out. That makes a lot of sense. I am sure Matt will land on his feet somewhere but a shame for his Iowa City family.

I don't know if Gatens has aspirations to be a head coach someday. If he does, it might be in his best interests to look to D-II for openings. I would like to see him retained at Iowa, though.

Listening to his press conference, he talked extensively about former players…would not surprise me 1 bit for him to keep a former player like Gatens on staff if he likes what he’s about. Think it says a lot that Gatens showed up to the press conference.

Gatens was at the press conference so that probably says something. Interesting that Tyler Sash's brother is on BM's staff and it sounds like he might come along with him.

I think Gatens has been the one holding down the fort after Fran got fired. He deserves our gratitude for that, regardless of what his future entails.

Other than being a former player, what is the fan reasoning for wanting Gatens to stay? Honest question.
High character, loyal. He seemed to be the one that would talk to Payton after Payton came out of the game and
was frustrated and tried to level him/coach him up. Obviously he knows about shooting techniques.

Gatens will need to get out of Iowa City at some point if he
wants to move up as a coach...so its not all bad if he doesn't keep his job as moving will let him grow more as a coach.

Two more is what I heard.

I saw on the news tonight Sash is a candidate for the Drake job.

Also, when Fran came Gatens stayed and helped the team improve and go to the NIT after the dark Lickliter days.

Seems like he could talk from experience and help recruit some of the old players to come back.

Gaten’s Dad had a hand in getting Lickliter fired. Matt was going to leave for Michigan State if Lick was back for other year.

I think ben has to have someone familiar with recruiting the state of iowa. Gatens brings that. He already knows who is who in iowa high school basketball. Plus illinois. Kansas, and missouri. Big thing is he has already been in contact.

From what I understand ben staff knows missouri.

Then last thing is Gatens character. He's everything ben has expressed he wants in a player. Why wouldn't it be the same on the coaching staff?

Thought they would announce some names by now. Maybe state law required them to go through the posting process.

Tom Kakert said on his podcast that Josh Sash, Bryston Williams and Xavier Kurth from the Drake staff will be on the Iowa staff.

I want to know who the strength & conditioning coach will be. Weight room attendance is important.
Then why isn't Iowa recruiting Mr. Universe and the runners-up?

I loved basketball and baseball before they discovered weights and all the injuries that have come along with them. Strength isn't supposed to be part of basketball. Go back and look at the All-Americans before the 1980s. They might not have a muscle among them. They were quick, fast, and talented. Ever see Pete Maravich or John Johnson. How about Caitlin Clark?

Get the bullying out of the game, and everyone would be better off . . . except, of course, for the weight machine companies and the weight training staffs.

It would be great if MG is a good fit for BMac's staff.

I see the only coach listed on the roster is Ben. No Matt Gatens as an assistant. Interesting they scrubbed him if he is in fact still there.
I would imagine thats because his choices have not been officially announced. I don't think that means anything in regards to Gatens either way....

I think Gatens was more involved with the defense--at games when we would be going back defensively is when he would get up and crouch down to yell things to the players--for what that is worth.....

Leistikow thinks that if Spurlock is retained, they have a good shot to retain Josh Lewis.

Tom Kakert said on his podcast that Josh Sash, Bryston Williams and Xavier Kurth from the Drake staff will be on the Iowa staff.
Alright, that leaves us with 2 spots if true. Spurlock (my #1 choice) and Gatens will fit the bill nicely. Spurlock is a big reason for the recent recruiting successes as I understand it.
