The NCAA has agreed to permanently drop its rule prohibiting athletes from negotiating the terms of name, image and likeness payments until after they enroll in school.

The NCAA's now-abandoned rule was designed to try to keep schools and booster collectives from using NIL deals as a recruiting incentive for incoming high school athletes and players in the transfer portal. Though schools and boosters were allowed to speak generally about the kind of financial opportunities that might be available on campus, they were prohibited from making a specific offer to an athlete until he or she was enrolled.

On February 23, 2024,
a federal judge in Tennessee granted a preliminary injunction against the rule. The injunction has allowed booster collectives and schools to make specific financial offers to athletes in the recruiting process during the past year. Monday, March 17, 2025's settlement makes this change permanent.

Revenue sharing:

The NCAA's current rules state that only third-party groups can pay athletes for their NIL rights, but that is on track to change this summer. Each school will be able to share roughly $20.5 million with its athletes via NIL deals next academic year -- a figure that is expected to steadily rise during the 10-year lifespan of the settlement.

Many schools have already started signing contracts with their athletes
in anticipation of the settlement's approval. Monday March 17, 2025's agreement clears the way for schools to continue negotiating the specific terms of these deals with athletes during the recruiting process.

When it comes to revenue sharing:

It won't happen, but if Iowa divided $15M evenly among the 105 players (85 scholarship, 20 walk ons), each player would receive $142,857.

If Iowa, as an example, gave each of the 20 walk ons $10,000, that would leave $14,800,000 for the 85 scholarship players. If each of the 85 players were paid equally, each scholarship player would receive $174,117.

The $15M figure is based on what follows.

What a reversal of Pay for Play. Originally it was the athlete plays for a college team and gets fans following them and they are very good so they dont want EA Sports to use their NIL in their games. So they get the go ahead to get paid for their NIL after doing some great stuff in their sport.

But now even high school kids can sign up for dough without even been at one college class!!! Is that what this is? It is really just buying players.

Schools like Alabama, in football and Kansas, in basketball, no longer with the advantage.

I will say it is crazy to me that $142K plus any NIL may AND a free education may not be enough for some. I know a lot of people that'd be happy & comfortable making $142K a year

Just strengthen the bidding war for players and agents.

It really is nuts. And SWARM wants you to join today and pay $20/month minimum.

Players will be getting:
* NIL payments (when they volunteer & more)
* Revenue sharing
* Free tuition
* Free housing
* Free food 24/7
* Free training facility access
* Free physical therapy
* Free personal training
* Free coaching
* Free tutoring
* Free Nike clothing

If I missed anything, let me know.

NIL will always be a thing to compete. I get it. I want Iowa to compete. Unless you grew up a hardcore Hawkeye with dreams of playing in Iowa City. If Iowa & two other schools offer you $142K as a revenue sharing package, but one school also says additional $500K a year in NIL that nobody else will match. You're probably going to that school. Most of these kids, this is probably the only chance they have in life to make a million or two. Most of them will be like most of us, hoping we have a six figure job by our 30's.

If anyone believes that this solves any problems they are deluded. NIL will need NFL contract type of regulation with guarantee playing contracts (12-24months), injury coverage, and 3% agent caps. If not NIL will continue to be the Wild West.

Reading that it’s laughable for people to contribute their own money. Iowa also gets $100 million a year in TV money.

But athletics needs your money.

You can’t make it up.

Nothing will be ruined because for that to occur people would need to stop going and stop watching.

We are decades away from that happening.

Sounds like they need to be donating money to me.

Professional weight training in a 4 star facility
Free clothing
Not just free food, but premium training table food.
Gets to play games in front of 15,000 people (except at Iowa) and millions on TV
Professional coaching
Audition for the NBA

Totally nuts.

Ya I’m not into Iowa Football and Baseball or sports in general. When this generation goes not sure where the money will come from or continue to grow.

The youth are phasing out sports and electronics and internet are the key factors. It’s a slow death but it’s coming. Still love the Hawks and will make time to watch if I’m available. Used to be the priority now it’s if I happen to catch it.

Sucks but all the apathy in me is gone. players can just leave when they want, havent proved anything to get paid. It’s sort of a joke and pandering to be paying these athletes the money before they have done anything on the college level.

Food, school, weight training, tutors, 4-5* hotels private flights, clothing, cars all provided on top of pay. That NUTS

Let’s say you find a hidden gem, develop invest all those resources and training and staff/personal attention to mold and make elite to have them leave after you did all that when no one else believed in them to have them leave for Ohio State for a check.

That’s the reality and most average people will continue to be turned off by it.

We are in transition. There will be contracts (more than 1 year deals).

Also these kids generate billions in revenue, and we want to whine they want to be paid??? We'd all be on board if we had the youth and talent right now.

The internet started in earnest say 25 years ago. Student sections are still full of kids on game days.

It would be hilarious if the courts changed directions and ALL of those "contracts singed in anticipation" were null and void. I'd bust a gut laughing so hard....

NO. I want all the schools to pay the athletes from the rev share pool ONLY, except for actual NIL contracts with companies. Thats what I want. Unfortunately, thats not whats going on...
Man I can create all sorts of shell companies. It is all about who has who for donors.

No kidding. No one should be donating to the UI athletic department at this point. They have tv money to burn. Give whatever you were giving to the school to the SWARM/ NILs now if you want better teams.
Hopefully the season ticket "donation" money is being totally redirected towards the players' pocketd at this point.
