An important note on the all-conference teams: These are based on how players will perform in 2022. Career statistics and awards matter in the evaluation, but choosing players for the 2022 all-conference team is largely based on predicting and projecting the best for the upcoming year. Also, team strength does not play a role in selections. These are the best individual players at each position in the league for '22.

Who had more punts, Taylor or the Rutgers guy?
Iowa led the Big 10 in punts last year with 82. Rutgers was 2nd with 72. Per game Rutgers was 4th in number of punts and the Hawkeyes were #1 in punts per game.

This is a stunning stat! How many drives where 3 and out because of a inept QB, poor OLine and RB that would dance and not hit the holes hard and we still won the Big West. Our defense was National Championship caliber. Our offense Woof!

Ouch! Leading in number of punts per game is one stat I prefer NOT to be at the top of….
I'm never going to forgive myself for back this up, but Iowa ranked 10th in special teams efficiency rating last year in all of football, the only other P5 schools ahead were KSU, Alabama, Georgia, and Arizona State. Field position is a huge part of Iowa's game.

Colby will be on an All Big Ten team this year. Maybe not first or second but I think third. Richman will get either a third string or honorable mention. I think all the linebackers will get on a team and Merriweather is set to have a big year.

Leading in punts per game is not a good stat no matter how you spin it.

What if you're playing Indiana and their QB keeps wanting to throw it to the wrong team for touchdowns...I'd punt on first down and let the defense score again. Now repeat that 12 times and viola, leading in punts per game and winning the big ten west. Almost exactly like last year.

Good for Doyle. Happy to see him do well and help Baylor win a Big 12 title last year. Kid was put in an awful spot 2 summers ago. Not that it matters much now but Campbell is a better MLB so has worked out well for both.

But punting is winning
When your guy pins the opponent inside the 10 yard line repeatedly it is. Taylor played a huge role in that PSU win last year. The crowd played a big role as well, but it got them stoked that PSU had to start from the shadow of the goal posts almost every series.
Yes, it would be nice to never have to punt, but as long as KF is here it will be an important role.

Heres the release from UI. I figured Athlon had more than the 2 All Big 10 teams that they listed on their website, previous years they listed all 4 teams on the website.

From the link:
Those named to the third team include sophomores Connor Colby (offensive line) and Lukas Van Ness (defensive line), and senior defensive lineman Noah Shannon. Sophomore running back Gavin Williams and senior safety Kaevon Merriweather were fourth-team honorees.

I added Athlon's 3rd and 4th team All Conference to the 1st post in this thread along with how many players each team had that made All Conference.

And this also helps explain why Tory's net punting stats are below the Rutgers punter. How many times did the Rutgers punter boot it when their team was inside the 50 yard line?

Regardless, both of those guys have dynamite in their legs, I just like Tory a lot more.😁

Which is why I don’t understand why the best punters in the country aren’t begging to play for Iowa.

Punters wanna punt.

Most if the best punters now are coming from Down Under. The Austrailian kicking academy or whatever it is. I think there were dozens of Aussie punters in the NCAA last year....
