Prime Minister Tony Abbott - maybe the stupidest, most bigoted, most venal leader in the developed world - got the boot from his own party.

He was replaced by another conservative, so it isn't a total return to sanity, but at least their leader is now arguably smarter than most if not all of the GOP contenders for president here in America. Solely based on him not being a climate change denier.

What does Trump say about the environment? I looked it up and found this:

Environment
He does not just deny that climate change is occurring; he calls it a hoax, and says those who warn of global warming only want to raise taxes. He is less outspoken on other environmental issues, though he sued unsuccessfully in 2013 to block plans for wind turbines in Scotland that would power 65,000 homes, arguing, in part, that they would mar the view from a golf course he was proposing to build.

Thanks. Good to know. I had heard about his offensive stand in Scotland but didn't realize he was actually stupid on such an important issue as climate change.

Of course with the Donald, you never know if he's giving you his real position or just being a posturing ass.

I expect Trump to become a more serious about issues soon - maybe in this debate - if he actually wants to be president. It will be interesting to see whether he walks back some of his outrageous crap, or doubles down.

It would be good for him and for the GOP if he took an intelligent position on climate change.

Is there any reason to think this position isn't the winner for the GOP primary crowd? The man already wants to tax the rich and redistribute to the labor classes while protecting our market. I'm not sure how many more liberal positions we can expect the guy to embrace.

Well the denier stance certainly seems to be a winner in this primary season - as it has been for the GOP for years now. But eventually even dumb Republicans will have to acknowledge reality. I haven't seen any polls on it, but I suspect that's beginning to happen a little already.

It didn't help Huntsman to be sane on climate change in 2012. But that was then. And he was never in contention.

Being the first or only sane one this time around could be a smart move while leadership in the GOP race is still being measured in low polling numbers. I imagine if any one of the top 4 or 5 candidates takes a strong, science-based stand on this, it could give him a boost. And Trump's skill at scathingly mocking those who disagree could be just the approach necessary to shake things up on climate change.

You're right that he can't embrace too many liberal positions and still fit among the sock puppets. But being right is only a liberal position because Rs have become science deniers and think truth, facts and science are liberal. If a GOP leader embraces climate science and basically says "don't be an idiot, science is not a liberal plot," he could pull it off.

Imagine Trump saying something outrageous like "I am the most successful man in the history of the universe and I got that way by relying on the best science to help me make decisions. The best science proves that climate change is real, predominantly man-caused, and very, very dangerous. I won't let these ostriches put America's head in the sand and pretend that facts don't matter."

I hear ya, but if Trump were to get elected and use protectionist trade policy to bring manufacturing plants back to the US, wouldn't that be pro environmental? Don't we have stricter emission standards than these low cost alternative nations? You may get just what you want through the back door (hey! :p).

Nearly every problem we face would be better if our labor class was stronger and I think Trump is the only guy with a sensible plan to do that. Sanders plan is to tax profits and redistribute directly, but Trump's plan is to tax production and get the market to redistribute for him. That means a reinvigorated labor movement which secures those gains for generations. None of the rest care a bit about labor. I hope Rs don't catch onto this too soon for R laborers seem to have very low self esteem and will vote against the guy as soon as they think he is on their side.

How do you reconcile that survey of his plans with his claim that he will lower taxes for all but hedge fund guys?

While nobody sympathizes with the hedge fund vultures, if taxes are going down and regulations are coming off, will we still have better environmental and labor protections?

I haven't thought it all through yet, this is mostly a flirtation on my part. But just spit balling I'm assuming an R would get R support for most policy proposals. I could see Trump getting D support for his trade plan but not his regulation or environmental plans. Frankly I think if the trade plan leads to a boom in domestic investment, environmental and labor protections will take care of themselves. People with money can afford to worry about those issues.

I haven't assumed you were really drinking Trump Tea. More playing with his ideas, finding a few things you like, and wondering if he's sincere about them. I've done the same a few times.
