A Council Bluffs woman who died after becoming ill at the Page County Jail overdosed on methamphetamine she’d smuggled inside the facility in a body cavity, according to an autopsy.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has released findings related to the death of 25-year-old Jessica Lee, who died Dec. 2, 2015, at Nebraska Medicine of acute methamphetamine toxicity. Foul play is not suspected.
Lee was jailed on Nov. 19 after her arrest in Page County on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, providing false information and interference with official acts.
On Dec. 1, jailers found Lee unresponsive in her cell, and she was transported to the hospital.
An investigation revealed that Lee had smuggled meth into the jail inside a body cavity. Hours before jailers found Lee unresponsive, she had made a recorded call to someone outside the jail.
Lee told the person on the other line she was dying, the Division of Criminal Investigation said, and revealed that she’d sneaked meth inside the facility.
Neither Lee nor the person she called contacted anyone at the Page County Jail to notify them of Lee’s statements or condition, the division said.
A message left with the division seeking more information was not immediately returned.
