I'm sorry...but the BIG 10 should have taken on this NIL process and come up with not only school specific program guidelines but some sort program that is conference oriented, that all programs can share money. You don't think getting 3-4 athletes per school to do ads promoting the conference would generate cash for players or to be shared with the entire team?

Let's say Iowa develops a great DE...Ohio State has a need at DE to round out their defense in 2023. Hey...Iowa DE...transfer and make $1,000,000 for your junior season. (see Lukas Van Ness). It's just messed up.

Honestly...I'd like a no poaching rule or something...so the conference doesn't eat itself. If you haven't seen the Kelvin Bell podcast/interview...you should watch it. He's honest about the portal and how it works. It's free agency pure and simple. You have no shot at a big time transfer, unless it's NIL money.

I love college football...and for the first time...I think a lack of leadership at every level (NCAA, Chancellors, Commissioners, ADs, and coaches) has potentially ruined a great sport. It didn't have to be the wild west...it could have been done and rolled out so it didn't just benefit the rich programs, corrupt programs, and the leeches who cheat to win. Opportunity lost.

I hate NIL and the problems of poaching with money, or just poaching in general.

But, I'm not going to blame the B1G, the NCAA or really anyone in particular. I blame the University Presidents for not stepping up and figuring this out.

But, here's how I see it frankly. It's kind of like an invasion by aliens from some other galaxy. Doesn't much make sense to blame anyone for not having a plan to stop them.

The sooner you realize the BIG Commissioner is an “Empty Suit” the better. He is nothing more than “Window Dressing”. FOX is running the show as far as the negotiations. But watch, somehow he will receive most of the credit.

Anarchy is never a good thing. As I, and others, have noted, NIL isn't the problem. NIL without rules is the problem because it's anarchy. Cheating has been going in in college sports--and politics, and religion, and every other human endeavor--since day one. So to address that fundamental human flaw, we have rules and governments and laws to try to make things as fair and just as possible. NIL was inevitable and long overdue given the extraordinary amounts of money that have flooded into college sports. But as others have pointed out so well in this thread, the leaders failed. The university presidents, the conference honchos, the coaches, the NCAA . . . It didn't have to be this way, and it's going to be a huge challenge to get it under control. But it can be done if the right people--starting with university presidents--demand it. Until that happens, anarchy will continue to rule college sports.

I didn’t know Iowa was getting high profile transfers before NIL.
You mean any transfers? Bell was talking about how he was in on a few guys...and bam, suddenly no communication...and he said NIL was the difference.

I'm honestly not delusional that NIL is going to bring Iowa high profile players...what I'm worried about is that it's going to do a few things:

1) Make some teams more competitive (Nebraska for example) who will do things others won't. Nebraska fans would sell their kids if they thought they could make their beloved Huskers more competitive...and I guarantee you their collective will be huge...because it's like a Field of Dreams fantasy for them...something that will return them to the late 90s or early 70s. And they will cheat with Frost there.

2) NIL will entice the players Iowa has developed to transfer during their last two years of play. Would you turn down $250K-500K to play your final year or two at OSU? It's really messed up.

So this great leader you envision…. Is he by chance Karl Marx?

And I would ask you...based on your response.

So this great leader you envision...Is he by chance Donald Trump? The whole socialist propaganda is ridiculous and great political theater. Be afraid...be very afraid...never mind the fact that the stock markets (capitalism) has thrived under Democratic regimes. You just have to do research and take off the white hoods.
Are you new here?

Sorry...I have to stop watching the morning news...these mass shootings are getting to me. I apologize I shouldn't have reacted to your post that way.

Is there something I missed with Van Ness? This is the 2nd thread that mentioned him. Are we seriously counting people who may transfer?

The threat of legal action has all the the powers to be spooked.

Which. Conference Commissioner has done more than Warren?

None because everyone is paralyzed by concern over surefire losses in court.
If there was a perfect blueprint on how to fix this they would be following it.
It sucks for a developmental program like Iowa and it gives the car salesmen programs like Nebraska a chance for a quick fix to catch up to Iowa.

He must be. I'm not sure what market our "friend" has his money in but my IRA CRATERS every time dems get in office. Trump may be a clown but my investments grew at record pace while he was there and are once again taking a dump the last year and a half. Gas was $1.49 when Sleepy Joe took over and its $4.50/gallon now, and thats not all on the crisis in Ukraine either. Inflation is out of control and our "commander in chief" doesn't have the slightest idea what to do about any of it. The white hoods thing is funny though. Anyone who cant see that the dems are doing everything in their power to move toward socialism needs to remove their blinders. More and more social programs. Give us the money and less us to decide who to give it too. What else do you call that. Oh, and by the way, Mr Commander in Chief just WHO is going to pay for the trillions of dollars were sending to Ukraine? Time to shit or get off the pot. Spank Putin now, or keep throwing all those American tax dollars down the toilet for all the good its doing.....

The sooner people like you realize Iowa is out of the running to compete for national titles in all sports you can stop getting so triggered.

OSU wants $13M from their top 100 donors annually just for football. PSU already has 3 collection groups formed. Indiana has 2.

I don't see Iowa keeping pace with this or a majority of other schools. It's not going to take many years for the money to dry up and schools to say enough is enough. As well as boosters high expectations after handing gobs of cash out to players.

A new tier/division is going to come out of this for the "haves". And the "have nots" will will struggle to find a network that will pay them a quarter of what they are getting now.

Probably just 5 years away from the B10 being blown up when OSU, PSU and Michigan leave. The rest of the schools and fans are going to get tired of losing players and games to them.

Don't know how I'm going to feel in a few years. Opening day tailgating on a sunny fall day with a chance to win what?

The lotto. 😉

Certainly we can't compete with the top 10 schools maybe...but I think you may be underestimating the deep pockets of some of our alumni. This is a giving group...and I believe the average fan will contribute something.

My personal belief is that if the Collectives are sound, have good management, and it's not going to be abused by high admin costs...I think this could generate some serious cash for players.

The one outlier problem is when you have schools, like OSU or Texas A&M, that can outright buy the guys they want for whatever price. I know Iowa isn't getting those guys now anyway...but a guy like Proctor comes to mind. We did have a shot at him...but if someone puts $1 million bucks out there...well...Iowa isn't going to compete...or that's my guess.

What's interesting is that no one is talking about the other problems with throwing all this money at 18 year old kids and their families. With money comes expectations...there is a mental health side of this that I'm sure is going to crop it's ugly head into the equation. There is enough pressure already on players...wait till their collective doles out big dollars. It will be interesting...because at Alabama, my guess is that they cut players pretty quick if they aren't panning out.

Hawks will find their niche. Probably shouldn't compete with Big $$$ programs ~ no win situation. The $$$ pipeline into IC just doesn't flow the way it does in other states. The $$$ pipeline will determine who plays Professional College Football, and who plays Semi-Professional College Football.

I know it's pretty easy to feel that way about not competing for National Championships. Then a guy like Dan Gable comes along and well...you know the history. Lute Olson...etc.

So Boise State can complete for national titles in basketball but Iowa can't? Because everyone wants to live in Idaho. Oregon competes for NCs in football? Cincinnati got in the mix this year...and Iowa can't? Fran McCaffery can't compete for National titles...that may be true, as we have a pretty large sample set at this point.

I just don't buy your logic as it's about a coach who comes in and creates something special. Alabama was sucking until Saban found a home there. It will be interesting what Lincoln Riley does at USC...after years of malaise in Trojan world.

I will also say this...the 2009 team, with Stanzi healthy against NW and OSU...and we likely were playing for a shot at the NC...although we would have gotten screwed because Texas and Alabama were both undefeated that year and we weren't crashing that party. With that defense...giving Norm Parker 28 days to prep for the opponent...playing a run first team in Alabama. That was not a dynasty Alabama team...they had no passing attack at that time...58 yards passing in the championship game. Just saying there was a chance.

A dynamic coach, who builds a staff of great recruiters...can compete for National Titles. NIL is going to be very interesting as to how it changes the landscape. Right now, there are two programs in my view that have a huge lead on the rest of College Football...Georgia and Alabama. They are so deep and have built such a recruiting advantage...and have been active in the portal...as long as Smart and Saban stay there...it's going to be tough to unseat them....and unfortunately NIL just bolsters them...oh and they will cheat.

If you are interested, here is a good article from the Athletic with lots of quotes from people involved with the NCAA over the years as the issue of NIL was debated.

There were some in the organization that had the foresight to see that if they didn’t change and gradually adjust to the new realities of NIL, then eventually the dam would burst and someone else would make the rules for them in a way they didn’t like.

But as we now know, they ended up resisting any change as long as possible and dug in their heels rallying around the antiquated notion of “ameteurism”.

Here’s a quote from the article:

Brand’s willingness to rethink was on display during a 2006 address to NCAA membership.

“Today’s iteration of intercollegiate athletics often is criticized for having abandoned the concept of amateurism to commercialism and big paychecks, while failing to include student-athletes in the perceived financial bonanza,” Brand said. “The problem is we have romanticized the concept of amateurism as an unsustainable cross between its roots in the class distinction of 19th century England, where sport was to be reserved for those whose wealth permitted participation as a leisure activity, and a halcyon ideal that college sports can operate without commercial support and indifferent to the realities of a modern business model.”

I don't need to google anything, and your the one posting stupid shit. I HAVE all my quarterly IRA statements for the last decade. I know for a FACT what my investments did during the last admin, and I know what it did for Obama, (OKay), and what its doing now, (its tanking, as is every other sector of the economy). Maybe stop googling and open your damn eyes.

At this juncture...I've decided you are too stupid to argue or present facts too. If you lost money during the Obama administration where the markets were up a cumulative 181% in 8 years...you may want to review your investment strategy. It is the 3rd best performance of any president in our history. You know who is #2? Bill Clinton.

And the economy isn't tanking. Employment is the strongest it's been in 50 years...wages are rising too. We are dealing with inflation brought on by a war in Europe, supply chain issues, covid related shutdowns in China, and strong consumers who have been buying up everything for months causing a major supply issues. That's reversing now. We just need someone to kill Putin and change directions in Russia. That would go a long way in getting balance back in the oil markets and get a major driver of inflation back in check.

Iowa can't compete to keep their return man. Not only will Iowa lose to the NFL but also to teams that have advanced collective groups as well. Iowa's development process is going to need overhauled to produce sooner before they move on. Loyalty will be real interesting to watch.

Another forecast of doom. I'll believe it when I see it.

The Supreme Court decision on NIL was the potential death knell. Now, sadly only Congress can fix this NIL crises and I lack belief in Congress' ability to accomplish anything of value.

The lack of a Plan B if the NCAA lost in the Supreme Court is the failure of the Big Ten and the NCAA, of course other conferences. If you're in the Supreme Court it means a case could go either way, merely from the fact that the Supremes wanted to write on topic. So, what kind of strategic leadership fails to generate the "Plan B" in case you lose in the Supreme Court? The NCAA and the Big Ten.

Moreover, do not lose sight of an important fact. The Big Ten business model that promotes a few schools at the expense of the other 9 or 10 is greatly helped by the NIL. Does the league really want to fight a change that feeds that very business model? Teams like Iowa, and there are a lot more of us than the blue bloods, will slowly become meaningless because we do not have the economic base to compete. A political solution will be the only recourses for the "us'" of the world. Since the blue bloods come from mostly larger states they will have even more power in Congress. It's not a partisan issue so no Congressman will vote against their home state's school interest regardless of party affiliation. So we could expect every member of the House from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin vote against any change that would hurt their home state schools.

At least that would make for some funny, albeit temporary, alliances. I mean you would have Elise Stefanic and AOC voting the same way, which may never have happened before.

College Athletic Sports has entered a period of creative destruction. The driving forces of change, namely NIL, realignment and Transfer Free Agency, are going to lead to many unexpected results. I would describe the present and recent past weeks as reactionary by those that are aggressive by nature. There is a lot of short term thought and little thought about the downstream consequences. The pursuit of a national championship in football or basketball is interfering with rational thought.

When I consider the circumstances college administrators are dealing with I don't think the athletic department is first on the list. Declining enrollment is impacting colleges nationwide. All three Iowa Regent's Universities have colleges of Liberal Arts that are financially stressed. You could blame lack of state support as a reason, but it isn't the only reason. Consider that male college enrollment has dropped below historic levels. It is against this backdrop that college sports is competing for attention.

There are more universities like the University of Iowa than there are universities like an Ohio State, Southern Cal, or Alabama. Universities like Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin will find a creative alternative for college sports. It could be a group of conferences that join together to compete for Alliance Championships, while other universities decide to sponsor a minor league NFL team. It is anybody's guess what will shake out, but the structure that the U of IA has been part of will cease to exist soon.

Idea:

Forget about NIL.
We can't compete with the Big Boys anyway.
We for sure couldn't compete with them in terms of NIL/bribe $$$$/virtual salaries
It is can of worms that will cause internal strife (jealousy) on squads as others have predicted.
Earlier in this thread someone spoke of quick hooks to cut high dollar/underperforming players. That is just common sense on the part of coaches in the revived Wild West.
The game is chaos, there is no point in trying to beat chaos.
I'm to the point of watching NAIA/D-III FB to see a cleaner game. D-I can go implode on its own.

First paragraph, spot on. Everyone involved in the decision is only interested in short term gain. The nature of the industry, from journalist to players (now) involve primarily people who typically have short term jobs that will probably end at a time of some other persons choice. That clearly includes entertainment media. That economic reality turbo charges the natural human instinct to take the money on the table with the least struggle.

The third paragraph is I think the transitional future. No one is going to broadcast games from the lesser Division. We do not know the media future but we do know Iowa does not have much market share. Maybe someone will get streaming rights, maybe those remain conference monopolies.

So everyone that complains about Iowa athletic success better understand these are the good old days.

Not sure I concur with your analogy as this NIL scenario was predicted by many, many who closely follow college football.

Yes. People predict alien invasions too. ;)

Maybe a bad analogy, but still I don't think many predicted it would be like this.

And, what can the B1G do by themselves that won't hurt their ability to compete with other conferences?

I hate it!
