B1G Game 2: Battle of 1-0 teams on a B1G Friday Night

For the first time, since 1974, my first season as a Hawkeye, Iowa opened up against back to back Top 25 teams.

Maryland was a near miss, similar to the 2019 game in Ames, where the opponent was seeking to play a Top 25 showdown. Maybe, that was a stretch, after all, College Park was just hoping to kickoff 2021 with a Blackout Game, with some success.

Mike Locksley is in Year 3 ....

In 2019, his fourth game back, this time, as a permanent coach (2015 - interim for 5 games), the Terps had their first Friday night Blackout Game planned against then #12 Penn State to kickoff the Big Ten, and the Locksley era.

Now, we fast-forward to 2021, the Terps are 4-0 for the first time, since the 2016 season. That was DJ Durkin's.

At today's press conference for Week 5, Mike Locksley started by recapping about the Kent State game.

"Winning is hard," he repeated today.

"Great" film session, pointing out coming back when they don't play well, they came eager, and ready to listen. They found ways to win. Explosive plays. Limiting turnovers Limiting explosive plays. Creating Turnovers. As we know from our own players, this is a Maryland team that wants to score fast and get off the field fast.

Maryland wants to play at their "Standard" which Coach Locksley emphasized.

"Typical Iowa team," he has been coaching against them, since 2005. "Kirk has been there forever."

"They don't beat themselves."

#97, #91 lead them in sacks, #31, the leader of the unit, #33, #4 - "we talented team across the board."

Offensively, mentioned QB, RB Goodson by name and strength at C.

"We will be challenged."

This week's game is "Mental Health Awareness Game" across the Big Ten and College Football, Coach Locksley shared. "Stigma" of mental health.

#5 Iowa at Maryland

IOWA is participating for this important cause, as well. An ACL or breaking an arm is visible. Mental concerns are not.

Maryland leads Big Ten in sacks was first Media question. Getting people into adverse situations.

We create 5 one one one's.

Development of our pass rushers:

Senior DE 97 Sam Okuayinonu, who Locksley stumped a couple times pronouncing, is developing into an outstanding pass rusher for the Terps.

BTN added the highlights, split screen. Sam O only had one start last season, and if you look at the lines on offense and in all 3 levels up and down the Terps staring defense, JUCO players are there.

Wow, thinking back to his comment about the player he couldn't pronounce.

Pushing the pocket, playing man coverage.

Iowa isn't a drop back pass team. Primarily boot, naked to complement their outside zone run game.

Need to put Iowa in 3rd and long.

Brandon and Reuben, asked about their injuries. First guy is game time decision and didn't practice on Sunday.

The Standard: Playing 4 Quarters e tal.
Philosophy for what it takes offensively, defensively or special takes.

Getting back to it. How we prepare. Playing to our standard. They didn't play that way against Kent State.

We shouldn't change week to week in preparation.

Rule 1 - demographics of kids 18-25, kids arriving with luggage. Stresses of social media. Create a safe haven here in Maryland.

Having a child with mental health issues. Expensive disease.

Support of U of Maryland. More than Xs and Os. Safe place, given resources to be best player themselves.

What would winning this game mean to Maryland?

He deflected. Want to be process driven. Playing to our Standard. One game doesn't define season.

Talent of Iowa on defense?

Vs. Your talented offense. Stretch them out.

Coach wasn't willing to give his game plan to Media.

Execution wasn't clean vs. Kent State.

Who plays clean games. Who wins explosive plays.

Can you have fun if process driven?

Fun is game day. Hard is what you do in preparation for the Game. The fun.

Lack of sleep. No sleep this week with a short week. The Terps had a night practice on Sunday night.

Locksley called themselves the new kids on the block, having to play two Friday night games in nearly back to back weeks.

Not sure Locksley agrees with that headline?

Something will have to give for one of these undefeated B1G teams.

Offensive line is 5-7 players deep. Playing pretty clean. Locksley happy with his O-Line.

This game on Friday is a great way to showcase the entire University Locksley shared on Tuesday. Building football, but called his school a "flagship" Top 20 academic university. Didn't say DMV, but you know he meant it, along with State.

"Next Man Up" mentality shared by Coach Locksley. While the beginning wasn't as smooth, he seems to be sharp, as he ended his Media conference.
