Back from Hilton… my thoughts about the game

When you miss wide open shots that is not good defense. Also I think we were expecting a foul to be called the numerous times we had contact going up for a shot. You got to pay through that, I know, but still a lot of contact was not called.
When teams miss wide open shots against the type of pressure that the Clowns administered last night- it is usually the result of a player's play being sped up the entire game. The player suddenly is open and they know help defense is coming. I watched the Clowns play Creighton last Saturday and the only guy on Creighton's team that was not bothered by ISU's pressure was the 6th year senior transfer. Iowa is a young team that is tailor made for pressure to be effective. Besides, Coach McCaffrey teams typically do like pressure defense.

What do college kids do in IC, that they can't do in Ames? One thing that appears to be the case in Ames is that you can have fun at a college basketball game. That must not be possible in IC, because the students don't really show up.

He was 4-14 from the floor. Not exactly what you want there.
I'll give you that. Watching the students at Mackey or East Lansing, or Illinois, it's damn embarressing watching an Iowa basketball game and the lack of any organized student presence. I know some of this is on the University and seating etc... but our current student participation at Carver is abysmal as compared to other conference schools.

Bohannon earned all he got last night by leaving his shoes there 2 years ago. Karma's a bitch.
Sorry but no........the whole place was chanting "f Bohannon" multiple times, even the adults that should know better. Thank god I didn't take my kids. Niang was just as big of a d-bag as JBo, but I never saw the adults at Carver act like those jacka$$es last night.

By the way, is it always that freaken hot in Hilton?? It had to be at least 85 in there by the time we left.

Not to be rude, but have you ever been to a college sporting event? The Iowa students were chanting “**** Kent State” when playing Kent State in football.
Students are completely different......they're young & don't know any better yet. Most of the "adult" clowns around me were yelling along with them last night. Bunch of low class rednecks.

Actually the last 3 games have had a ton of point blank missed layups and dunks.

Normally you chalk that up to being a fluke but its a little concerning now 3 in a row.

Illinois and Purdue are wins if Iowa makes layups and ISU would have been a lot closer.

Lack of outside shooting is one thing but lack of finishing at the rim is an even bigger problem if it keeps up.

Im hoping part of that is learning to play through contact.
As someone who loves the game of basketball it's maddening to watch the team be so bad at rebounding the ball and not being able to finish at the rim. This is basic stuff and there's no reason an undersized ISU team should outrebound us by 18. That speaks loudly to a lack of effort and fundamentals.

Ultimately, it was a road loss to a ranked team and one we can and should bounce back from. We won't shoot that poorly the rest of the season I can pretty much guarantee it.

There were definitely never any F Niang chants at Carver. Then again Iowa fans attending games typically aren't low class rednecks.

I went to the game. A few thoughts

1) ISUs defense is fun to watch. Someone made the comparison to Sparty's "mug them" approach. I respectfully disagree. ISU forces the ball to the sideline + baseline using it as an extra defender. This only works when u have. SOUND help defense + back side rotation - which they do.

2) The "F Bohanon" chants. I laughed bc JB brought it on himself. Normally I cringe at this type of language + behavior, but it was pretty funny. I guess it's a matter of perspective. Cyclone fans love it, Hawk fans think we are classless. If I were a college kid, I would do it. As an adult, I know better. Hard to fault the college crowd. I actually liked the "one more year" chant better.

Someone made the comparison to Georges Niang. I understand why other fans disliked him. Again, perspective. I think the difference is that GN was likeable, and didn't do anything off the court to tarnish his reputation. JB coming back for a 6th year didn't help him either. From the outside looking in, it seemed like a selfish move

3) ISU will be a tough out because of their defense. Like every team at every level, when you shoot well all is well. The difference this year is they should be able to keep a game close if/when they don't shoot well (like the 1st 10 minutes last night). Conditt is playing well + seems to have a better attitude this year (again winning helps that),but he is foul prone. Robert Jones plays hard, but is a liability when he is in the lineup. A team with a strong post will give them trouble.

One of the better games I've been to in a few years.

Niang wasn’t likable….he’s a cocky dip$hit that ran his mouth on social media. Same as JBo. What did JBo do to tarnish his rep other than get sucker punched by a clown?

A few thoughts:
Do you seriously think anyone, even Clown fans, cares for your analysis of the Clown game?
Who cares what you think of JBo?
Who is this Niang fellow?

Was Niang cocky? 100% yes. I maintain guys at that level need to be that way to a certain degree. Niang could certainly back it up. All-American at ISU + having a good NBA career.

He got a standing ovation from the KU fans after his last game at Allen Field House. He got the same after his last game in Big 12 tournament (after a loss to OU). When the last time you saw an ESPN-type interview a player from a losing team (I think it was Holly Rowe who interviewed Niang + Buddy Hield).

Was he likeable? I would say yes. If you are an Iowa fan, the answer is probably no though (unless he had played for your team).

Hard to defend Bohanons behavior in that bar. Who punched him isn't a factor. He got what he had coming. That night in the bar, and last night in Ames.

I wonder why today's CNBC generic poll has the Republicans up +10...literally, a number even approached in any previous CNBC poll. Further...Biden is tanking in his own job approval polls. Looks like a whole lot of buyers remorse going on amongst independents...and who could blame them given the disastrous nature of our leadership these past 11 months.

And I would ask you...where were you through all the rioting, murder and mayhem of the BLM/Antifa riots throughout the spring and summer of 20, miscreant?

Disastrous leadership summed up perfectly 2016-2020. Thoughts on the coup that was literally on a power point how they planned to seize power? You are an abysmal American.

If you think that was a coup...you're an idiot. Try turning of the CNN/MSNBC garbage for a minute and get some fresh air.

As for disastrous leadership from 2016-2020...are you referring to the low inflation, secure borders, defeat of ISIS, low gas prices and fuel independence or the strenghtened military, lowered taxation, and unprecedented Warp-speed production of a Coronavirus vaccine?

Why do you think the Dems and Biden are getting massacred in the polls...is it the "great" job they're doing this past year?

As for mindless...you seem to be giving a demonstration of that right here in this thread. Ironic that you claim to see it in others.

Dude, Read my lips: very few people over here give a damn about Niang. I have nearly zero recall of him, but based on that, he seemed to be kind of a hick.
Re JBo, you wouldn’t get it. Stop.

I just looked up the ‘standing O’ at Allen Fieldhouse on YouTube. After the game, the KU public address guy was calling out KU seniors, spotted Niang being interviewed on Clown radio, and asked the crowd to applaud him. A few thousand of the KU crowd, being a polite bunch, slowly got to their feet and clapped their hands. It was not like the crowd spontaneously got to its feet and cheered him as he came off the court. I guess you’d call it a lower case ‘standing o.’

It's pretty obvious that there is nothing else better to do in Ames. No VEISHEA riots, nothing to burn, so mught as well dress up and act like idiots. Free ketchup and mustard at McDonald's, too. Party!

😉
Let me know the next time students line up for an Iowa game 24 hours before tip.

Guy is miserable, don’t even bother. Same reason he’s in the business of finding a reason to tell someone no.

Maybe both of you should kill yourselves instead of posting this political crap on the basketball board.

Niang is a complete d-bag….& probably the least athletic player in the entire NBA with his slow feet & 2 inch vertical. Clown fans are so dumb they don’t even realize what a joke Polturd is…….holding press conferences to bitch about refs, blaming our band for getting assaulted after their groundskeeper screamed them off the field, & of course getting kicked out of high school games for acting like a jack-a$$. Their fan base is an embarrassment to our state & I’m glad they’re demoted to the Little 12/Big Mac conference.

Fandom always amazes me. Who we consider a d-bag is largely based on what jersey they wear. If Niang played for Iowa, suddenly he is viewed differently. If Pollard was the Iowa AD (and did for Iowa what he has done for ISU), he is viewed differently. As for Bohannon, my opinion of him is based upon what others (people I trust who do know him) have told me. Leaving his shoes on the Hilton court, his behavior in the bar last summer, and comments on social media only reinforce what I have been told.

Athletes behavior on the court doesn't bother me that much. Players at that level need a certain degree of swagger. Caitlin Clark is a perfect example. She comes across a certain way (not all of it is positive), but someone at her level needs to be VERY confident. Others may see that as cocky. Whatever. She is a great player. Hawkeye fans love her. Fans of other teams (ISU for example) may not. If she switches jerseys, suddenly people feel differently about her. Doesn't make any sense. I think this actually happened with Adam Haluska. Cyclone fans loved him, then hated him. He didn't change. The way he played didn't change. Just his jersey color. I don't know how Iowa fans felt about Stacy Frese transferring from Iowa to Iowa State. Anyway, it's dumb to cast generalizations on kids (yes 18-22 year olds are kids) that we don't know.

Maybe the real d-bags are us?

You’ve lost the room. Adios.

What a miserable night to be in attendance.

I think ISU played well and I’ll give them credit for earning the win.

I also think the Hawks played horribly and this goes for the Murray twins especially. It was honestly hard to watch Keegan be a non-factor. Yeah, they were aggressive with him on D and the calls weren’t going his way, but they’re not going to go his way on the road in the B1G either. He’s got to get used to it.

As for the minutes, well, I think everybody here sees Perkins has more he can give this team, although a couple times tonight he was a bit out of control, but at least he’s trying to make something happen. The ISU D was very good and most of our guys don’t have the moves or grit to fight through that stuff. Connor, Patrick, Joe T, Ulis… none of them are scorers really.

Rebounding is a huge problem. Like, it’s awful. This team sucks at it.

last thing - while I get ISU hates Bohannon and frankly they have good reasons to, those chants were not funny after the first time. I thought it was a bad look for their fan base. Not sure if it came through on TV or not, but in person it was over the top and just not a good look.
No surprise on Clones being classless, it is truly the only move they really have.

ESPN is not the profitable business it once was for a variety of reasons.

With a company that big a few hundred K is a relatively small amount and shouldn't be prioritized over the product.

I think it just speaks to how poorly they are doing.
ESPN is joint owned by a little conglomerate known as The Walt Disney Company and the Hearst Corporation. I think they could stand to lose a few bucks here and there without resorting to paper bag lunches.
