Baer FOY

A name I thought of while watching the game was Frank Kaminsky.

Before everyone overreacts, the comparison comes from them both being point guards before they hit a growth spurt. He's def not as tall, but he's got decent handles and can play inside and out. Love the kid's defense and effort, effort, effort.

The complete Book of Baer has yet to be written, but I'm loving the beginning.

It's called maximum effort and expecting good things to happen from that effort. He's pretty skilled at a lot of things, which helps a lot of things.

IF he can add 15lbs of muscle next year, I think we will be looking at the next Chris Street!

Even at this early point in his career...he plays smarter than Jok...who likes to chuck it and can shoot...but continues to play reach defense, that is, if he is interested.

When some doubted whether Baer would show up in Big Ten play, I said he would because he's simply a basketball player. He may not jump the highest or run the fastest, but this isn't a track meet. A kid like Ryan Bowen or Chris Street is what Fran's teams have been missing--the athlete with ice water in his veins who has that extra heartbeat. Hustle and hard work can take you a long way in basketball, and if you have the skills Baer has to go with it, well, you see the results.

Iowa might be a mediocre team without Baer. But his example is rubbing off on the rest of the team, so look out. Expecting a win @ Purdue on Saturday might be a little too much, but then again, if this team has finally figured out that this game's not so hard when you work your tail off for 40 minutes EVERY night out, well, maybe the Hawkeyes keep it rollin'. In any event, we know Nicholas Baer will never quit and will never be intimidated. Walk-on. Right.

Can't rag on PG play for this game so now Pete is your current whipping boy? Does he take too many chances on D? Absolutely at times, but he also led the team in steals last night and had 4 assists to 1 TO.

I thought the best play he made all night was the little wide open 5 footer he made on the baseline when the offensive rebound came right to him. He didn't do anything particularly special on that play, but he MADE the wide open basket (I can picture many of our guys missing that seemingly easy shot - unguarded). That impressed me as much as anything, as strange as that may sound.

Yeah, you are a WEEK or so late. Started a thread about Nick Baer starting a week ago
Didn't take a Rocket surgeon to see Nick Baer is a heckuva player
Actually, no. I was saying this back in mid December
I and several others said this a year and a half ago.
You said he would be the Freshman of the Year in the Big a year ago? Wow.

There is plenty of room on the Baer bandwagon, no need for anyone to get possessive. I've been on the Baer bandwagon for some time. I haven't gone back to look at all my posts, but I posted on December 7th of this year that he needed to start and said this in a thread that day as well:

His head coach at Bettendorf is my nephew.

I can tell you that Baer was thrilled to become a walk-on. The young man is a Hawkeye. I do hope there is a opening for him at some point but if not he will wear his spot on the team with Hawkeye pride & will contribute make no mistake about that.

The guy just has it. Always has. No one can tell him he cant play. Its not arrogance either. He has taken his natural talent and added to it with hard work. Tremendous BB IQ.

Credit goes to his high school coach for his encouragement. And to his family for supporting his dream to play for the Hawkeyes.

Thanks. I agree, the kid has "it" and you can tell he has really put the work into his game to become a 3 point shooter. I fully expect he will be a starter before he leaves Iowa, probably sooner rather than later. Kids like him make everyone else play harder and look better. I'll be shocked if he isn't on scholarship next year (if someone leaves), or the year after at the latest.

Jok struggles to get down in a good defensive position at times, thus he reaches...easy to drive around that way. He is a shooter, needs to improve on the defensive end of the court. This is different than how he takes chances on steals...often times that leads to easy baskets for the other team...sometimes it works out.

MG had a great game, but MSU is hideous it seems at the PG position... I hope MG has a monster year...great start to his last conference season. He deserves success, given his hard work.

Well done, Mo. I remember that post. Prob why I've always been high on Baer. You built him up well.

I saw him in an exhibition last year which was my only sampling. Call it whatever you want, but he looked like he belonged then. Relentless and skilled. Only in mop up duty. But it was an impression.

Couple that with your post and, VOILA! Instant Baer fan! And I'm from the QC, so there's that.

Is it sad that I'm just waiting for the bubble to burst? Yeah, it is. The kid seems too good to be true right now. Not like he's Larry Bird, he's just a great story at this point, with a lot of time left to see how it all plays out. Hope Cinderella's Golden Carriage stays intact for the next 3.5 years!

He works to have poise as opposed to worrying if he'll make the shot. You could see him just collect himself and focus on execution. As a result, he makes the shot.

Baer should be called the pain reliever, with a prescription required. He just seems to come in when Iowa is struggling and helps ease Iowa's struggles with his energy. This kid is a throwback to the type of player that Tom Davis used to have on his team. He seems like a high IQ player, who plays under control for a freshman, and has nice skills. Very impressed with him.

Reminds me of Kevin Boyle. Complete package. That said, I think Baer being proclaimed Big Ten FOY is unlikely, but the kid just may surprise everyone.

having the added defense/rebounding off bench is big help also.

Really gives that second string some life.

Kid has a sense of the game that most players never get

Reason number 844 college basketball is my favorite sport, how do you describe the "it" some guys seem to have?

Have to lol, started this reply, something came up, and when I get back the following definitions of "it" have been added.

Hope Cinderella's Golden Carriage stays intact for the next 3.5 years!

totally agree that that was one of his most impressive plays, but that is not an easy shot. those in betweeners are no gimme.

I liked the post up on MSU's point guard. He saw the mismatch and reverted back to playing center in HS. Great play.

One thing that I feel gets overlooked about Baer is the passion that he plays with. The guy is complete energy and emotion, and I know that there's another thread comparing him to Aaron White, but I feel that that is the part of their games that are most similar.

And it doesn't seem to be an emotion that he lets get the best of him, like committing stupid/angry fouls, but one that he can keep under control and uses to fire up and motivate his teammates on the floor. Even if his upside is relatively limited, he's going to be an Eric May-esque leader by his senior year and is going to never be a player that "hurts" Iowa.

Love this kid. I'm not sure Chris Street or ten year NBA career Ryan Bowen comparisons are warranted just yet...but his career is young. If the shooting demonstrated lately is a real long term skill and he's not just on a heater we are going to see the Bulldog playing a ton of minutes over the next three seasons and plenty of time this year...and we're going to enjoy those minutes.

This is exactly what I thought. Got the rebound, got set, took his time and drilled it. Lots of composure.

Nairn or how ever you spell it is actually pretty good. He was a 4* recruit. He might be the quickest guy in the league with the ball in his hands. Either him or Yogi.

He can't shoot much though and Gessel just out muscled him going to the basket regularly.

I would say A, he already has allot better offensive game than Eric May, and B he is already a leader, which is both a good and a bad thing on a team that starts all upperclassmen.

His attitude is everything this team was missing. Intensity, focus, confidence and hustle and it seems to be rubbing off on the older players.

Who is Baer pushing out of the picture? Williams? Interesting to see how it plays out. He is a gamer...needs to be in there, more, not less.

Narin is the modern day Brian Garner...quick as hell, much stronger than Garner, but throws up bricks just the same. Let that kid shoot all night...just keep him out of the lane and slow him in transition :)

My only comparison between May and Baer was the leadership/intensity. I feel that Baer will contribute much more in terms of what will show up in the stat book than May did

Baer is a forward and Williams is a guard...doubt one impacts the other. If anything, Baer's emergence will impact guys like Hutton and perhaps Wagner down the road. This kid is everything that is great about Iowa basketball..has a little Street, Boyle, Murray, Bartles and Bowen in him. His composure is pretty remarkable.

Baer is fun to watch...he seems to relish the moment...a fulfilled dream it seems. Good for him.

I am sure he wants and will get a scholarship...but there is something unique and alluring to be identified as a "walk-on" playing at a high level in the big time. Kind of like an amateur in the U.S. Open or Masters...a special place of honor and respect.

Will be fun to see how his infectious, high energy, and intellectual way of playing will affect this team and future teams. This team has needed a leader...and they have one...a walk on? Who would have guessed it?

Love his hustle compared to some others last night. Another player deserving recognition for his defense last night is Clemmons defending Forbes.

Good call...the unsung hero of the game IMO. Forbes went off for 32 in the previous game. Non-factor Tuesday.
