I like our odds to be pretty good but there are some pretty big holes to fill next year as well. We leaned harder on our defense this year to play winning football than I think is sustainable moving forward, especially with 2 first team all big ten DL leaving the team, one of whom was the defensive player of the year and will be a top 10 pick in the draft at DT.

ISM is responsible for so many big plays for this team as well and a player like that can move safeties out of position to play the run. In addition there are almost no wide receivers that can block like Brandon Smith could. It bears watching what impact that new personnel will have in our run game going forward.

All of this adds up to a lot of pressure for Spencer Petras to get better and carry forward the improvements he made during the year. He played like a below-average QB for most of the year - no way we’re as successful next year without a ton of growth from him (or at that position) next year.

Or are we losing too many key players?

Remember, we entered this season as the 5th youngest team in the country.

I wish I could say we reload and I may be on to something here but I do like your style of thinking FRANNY .. I think we have the nucleus for a fantastic team but our edge rusher in Gholston is gone and a HUGE chunk of a guy in Nixon is gone but if we get back the rest and I am assuming Heflin is going to stay and gain more time under KF and be a senior Super Senior starter plus there’s Evans and we do have some run stuffers in the mix with Black and I would assume the rest of the line minus Neimen who will be filled in by (LB that slips my mind but took off for Covid reasons) then we have a star slaying lb’ing corp who might be one of the best or the best in the BT.. I like our chances next year for sure

Coaching staff has seen what playing transfer portal roulette can do and they’re hooked. Any depth holes will be filled that way IMO.

Passing game can only be better next year. SP should be settled in and the TE/WR corp will be addition by subtraction. Guessing SP felt pressure to get the ball to Brandon Smith and ISM because they’re senior studs and that can affect your confidence and decision-making as a QB. Tracy, Ragaini and LaPorta is a pretty badass trio.

Great point. I updated the orig post. Do you think our projected starting lineup could produce a 2009-like season?

Jack Heflin is officially moving on.

The 2009 squad had the following DLinemen returning: Clayborn, Klug, Ballard and Binns starting, with Mike Daniels rotating in off of the bench.

I am a big fan of our current back 7. But, in case you forgot, here are the starters on that back 7: Angerer, Edds and Hunter at LB. Sash and Greenwood at safety, with Prater and Spievey at CB.

There were some pretty impressive defensive players who couldn’t crack the starting squad: Mike Daniels, Micah Hyde, Tyler Nielsen and Jeff Tarpinian.

I really like our back 7, but unless Nixon, Golston and Heflin change their minds and decide to come back for 1 more year, our DL just doesn’t seem to measure up to that group.

I thought 2021 would be a special year again, but we are 2 years away. Even though we’ll have good depth, at most if not all positions, our starters don’t appear to be as good as past really good teams.

Iowa probably plays in the national title game if Shonn Greene had come back in 2009. RB was our only position group that wasn’t really good.

In Phil we trust. And look at Scott's comment on Iowa's back 7 (good as anybody).

I agree. Some very impressive names on that '09 team. Need a big time dt transfer or two to even come close.

I love our back seven but that's a big statement. Gotta say it's nice to see someone thinks we're in the conversation at least.
