According to HawkeyeReport.com sources, Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard had sports hernia surgery in Philadelphia last week under the care of Dr. William Meyers.

Dr. Meyers is the leading specialist in the field and has done procedures on NFL players like J.J. Watt, Marshawn Lynch, and Arian Foster in the past.

Beathard, who attended Iowa's basketball game on Sunday, has already started the rehab process and should be back to normal in about 6-8 weeks.

From Marc Morehouse at The Gazette:

The surgery was termed “very successful.” Rehabilitation time was put in the neighborhood of six weeks, which probably leaves Beathard’s status for spring practice up in the air at the very least.

HawkeyeReport.com first reported Beathard’s surgery. An Iowa spokesman said head coach Kirk Ferentz would possibly address this next week during the signing day news conference.

I saw an article a few years ago about athletes going to Europe for sports hernias because there was a minimally invasive procedure not yet approved here. Athletes were back in a week or two instead of 6-8.

Is that still a thing?

Ping, Wisconsin sent 2 football player to a specialist (Dr. Ulricke Muschawek) in Munich Germany this fall, Nick Thomas and Corey Clement. I understand that both procedures were a success but Corey's recovery took longer than he expected. CJ missing, or being limited, in spring practice wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Let the backup QBs get some valuable reps and let them gain some experience. It's not like CJ needs those 15 practices in spring to get him to All-B1G caliber. KF needs CJ 100% more than CJ needs spring ball.

That doctor has seen some really famous groins, so he's got that going for him.
I hope the recovery goes well and we get to see a healthy CJ play football next year.
Actually, Kirk said he didn't know if CJ would need surgery because of UI doctors. They would be mad if they knew CJ went elsewhere, and Kirk didn't want that!
