Ben Carson is tearing into his GOP rivals and accusing them of “dirty tricks” in an attempt to tank his presidential campaign.
In an email to supporters, Carson referenced rumors that were started on Monday prior to the Iowa caucus that alleged he was pulling the plug on his campaign.
“For months, my campaign has survived the lies and dirty tricks from opponents who profess to detest the games of the political class, but in reality are masters at it,” Carson said. “Even tonight, my opponents resorted to political tricks by tweeting, texting and telling precinct captains to announce that I had suspended my campaign — in some cases asking caucus goers to change their votes.”
One of those tweets Carson referenced came from Iowa Rep. Steve King who said “Carson looks like he’s out.” King is backing Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
Those rumors on Monday put Carson’s campaign in full spin cycle, with it releasing multiple statements saying one of the reasons Carson was returning home to Florida for a day was to get some “fresh clothes.”
Jason Osborne, Carson’s senior communications strategist, fired off a number of tweets to make it clear that the only thing that stinks about Carson’s campaign is his clothes. It also released a full statement on the issue.
Carson said in his email that hew as tired of the “destructive practices” in politics.
“One of the reasons I got into this race was to stop these deceptive and destructive practices, and these reports have only further steeled my resolve to continue and fight for ‘We The People,’ and return control of the government back to them,” he said.
Carson finished in fourth place in the Iowa caucus with support from 9.3 percent of voters.
