As much as I hate to ask,,
I know of hickory park and the pizza place but any good off the beaten path places to eat?

Cornbread BBQ is interesting. Services is slow IMO but it’s good.

They have a Sunday brunch with cinnamon rolls the size of loaves of bread.

Cornbred is legit. But my top 2 are also The Cafe and Aunt Maude's.

Jethro’s is also in town and better than HP. Corn Bread is the best bbq. Not far from Ames in Luther is another good bbq joint, What ya Smokin?!! Don’t go to HP, hit one of these joints.

Some places not yet mentioned.
Pammel Deli - Middle Eastern food. My favorite lunch spot.
Es Tas - more of a bar, but all you can eat tacos during the week for lunch are good
Dublin Bay
Brick City Grill - best burger in Iowa 2014
Wok n Roll - chinese in Campustown
Wallabys

As others have said The Cafe, Aunt Maudes, Cafe Beaudelaire, and Cornbread are all good. Cafe Beaudelaire won best burger in Iowa in 2018.
