going to be in the area next weekend. Looking for the ones with the best Hawkeye atmosphere plus chow of course. I've been to the vine it has a good Hawkeye aura but the food was average. thanks in advance.

It's going to be a challenge. The options for sports bar with food just aren't that great. Coaches Corner has great Hawkeye decor and decent food.

A+ food? You serious Clark?Want a good time go to the Hilltop.

Mickys is what you want. Lots of Iowa City history and the food is good.

My personal favorite would be Sams. Best IC pizza, big screens, and plenty of space. It may not be "hawkeye" enough for you though.

That was 100% sarcasm. When I am in the Iowa City/Coralville area Gus' is my go to place. Its not really a sports bar, however has decent amount of TVs, good food, and a good atmosphere. Great place to go day or night.

If I had to pick one time of year to get my Hawkeye sports on, it would be anytime between April and September.

These are the hawkeye bars I can think of right now.

Coaches Corner- good bar food, good TVs
Two Dogs Pub- good bar food, ok TVs
The Vine- ok bar food, ok TVs
Gus' on 965- good bar food, decent TVs
Eggy's- decent bar food, ok TVs
Carl & Ernies- good bar food, ok TVs

good>decent>ok

They have above-average bar food and an okay beer selections. Lots of decent TVs too.

We go there quite a bit when we want to get away from downtown.
Shakespeares is decent. I'm not a pork tenderloin guy, but I do like theirs. They could improve the tap list though.

Their food is awful, and it's run by a jackass.
You sure do seem to be up on the latest bars and restaurants to include the demeanor of their current managers. It's almost as if you lived HERE and not in Seattle. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............................................

Which one of the places that I've mentioned would qualify on the "latest bars?" Shakespeares? Micky's? Sams? Bobs? With idiocy like this it's no surprise that you have to go searching on the internet for friendships.

Not familiar where is it located?

He asked for best, not worst.

Tailgaters has some of the worst food I've ever had. The crowd sucks. The TVs are mediocre. The service is bad. And the interior and atmosphere is drab and bland.

I literally can't think of a sports bar I dislike more than tailgaters.

Then you haven't been to Gus's in Coalville.

Yeah, they are more or less the same place. Gus's wins on tvs (at least as of 3 years ago). Sadly, I've been to both at least 10-15 times.

Because it hasn't been mentioned, I am assuming the Column's food still sucks...asking from the mid-90's.

It's not as bad as it used to be, but it's not great.

If I'm going downtown, I'm going to either Donnelly's or Shorts. I also like Wig and Stella for a meal and a few beers, but not great for TVs.

Shorts would be awesome if they had more than 7 tables and a competent staff.

Good food, but TOTAL pain in the ass to get seated and served. Bathroom is disgusting as well.

How is Red's Alehouse in North Liberty? The wife and I plan on going to a game this year and it looks like they have a great beer list. Is the food good? How about the TV setup?

I always enjoyed the food at Quinton's for downtown Iowa City. The TV setup wasn't the best though. This is going off of memories from around 10 years ago. I do agree with SP about Sam's Pizza. For thin crust and calzone they were my favorite in Iowa City.

Reds- Food is ok. TV set up is good at the bar. Patio and beer selection are great.

Big Grove brewery in Solon is about the same. Decent food, beer, and a good patio. TV situation is good in the bar area.

SP is right with Shakespears. I'd go there more if they had a decent beer list. Down 1st Ave in Iowa City from Shakes is Two Dogs. Much better beer selection. Food is ok. Not a big fan of the strip mall location, but it's ok if you can get a seat at the bar.

I drove past two dogs the last time I was in IC but didn't have time to stop. Heard good things about it, but yes, the strip mall locale isn't too enticing. Hopefully I make it there the next time I'm in town. Don't they do some sort of Hawkeye broadcast from there?

Is the Old Capitol Brew Pub still up and running? Not really a recommendation, although the home brew is pretty good. Just curious...

Coach's Corner, if you're looking for a sportsy bar. Red's in North Lib has a great brew selection.

How is Mickey's food now? My favorite meal in IC is the Conglomeration and a bowl of clam chowder from Mickey's. At least it was back in the day.

Old Capitol closed in February. Apparently undergoing renovations right now to be another restaurant/bar.

Quinton's (at least the one in Coralville) has a meh atmosphere (TVs, at least) but the food is certainly better than average.

Red's...good tap selection, of course; food is fine; service generally good.

It seems like places around here either have decent food or a good sports bar atmosphere, but not really both.

I've eaten there twice (been more than 5 years though) and both times the food was really good.
I didn't cause a scene so I didn't need to deal with the manager.

Obviously he has because that place sucks a$$. High priced, terrible food and service, and they don't care if you know it.
