Beware of Kem-Dawg

Fans count out Iowa wrestlers at their peril -- especially in dual meets in Carver.

Nobody thought:

Brooks Simpson would beat Erick Voelcker
Tony Ramos would beat Jordan Oliver
Joe Johnston would PIN Luke Becker
Ryan Fulsaas would beat Damien Hahn
Ryan Morninstar would beat Trent Paulsen
Mark Ironside wold beat Kary Kolat (an All Star meet, but still a dual meet in Carver)
Mike DeAnna would beat Mark Churella (well, that was the Big Ten finals and in the Field House, but the same logic applies)

And on, and on, and on. Countless examples of huge upsets by Iowa wrestlers at home over the years. I'm not going to argue that Kemdawg is a better wrestler than Nolf, who's a complete stud. Likewise, I'm not going to argue that Brooks is better than Nickal, who's also a phenom. But do I think either guy could pull off a win in the dual meet this year? Absolutely. The "better" wrestler doesn't always win, to state the obvious. I think Brooks has the better shot of the two, but there's no doubt that crazier things have happened -- especially in Carver.

Great post. I would actually argue Kemerer has a better shot at knocking off Nolf just based on familiarity. I think he can keep it close and make it a one move match in the 3rd. Nickal's athleticism will give Brooks all kinds of problems IMO. Hope I'm wrong on that one.

Good point on the familiarity, Fall. For Brooks/Nickal, it will be strength vs. athleticism. Hoping strength wins out, but athleticism certainly could. That match will be great for the sport, because those two guys will be like a couple of rams going at it for 7:00. Both are willing to take chances, and both will let it all hang out. Should be worth the price of admission all by itself.

Another intriguing element to the Brooks/Nickal matchup is both of these guys often push things offensively to a reckless point. They both get away with it against most guys. In the matches NIckal lost that is exactly what cost him the match. Brooks is not afraid to go upper body and things could get real interesting. Here is to Beaker playing with fire and getting burnt.

A lot of great history there for sure. Home advantage should never be discounted especially at a place like Carver. I would extend your premise further. No one should underestimate any opponant. IMar got pinned for it. Kemerer definitely has a shot. I think its a small shot (I predict a Nolf major) but I also thought IMar would beat Nolf at the dual last year. You never know... For your viewing pleasure which may give you some hope (seeing Nolf on his back) or despair (seeing Nolf be Nolf).

I would disagree. Sammy seems to tighten up quite a bit against tougher foes, IMO. He throws lesser opponents around like rag dolls.....he's balls to the wall. But when it's a top tier opponent he's more methodical....more of a chess match. Which has only worked out for him once, by my math (vs what's his face from Nebby at Big Ten's last year). I would love to see him open it up and make Carver explode and I hope he does, but I'm guessing he shuts down, tries to keep it close, and Nickal exploits him. We'll find out

I'd disagree with your characterization of Sammy's style. I don't think he consciously shuts it down against better opponents, for the most part. I'd agree that tougher opponents are tougher to "throw around like rag dolls", but that doesn't mean Sammy isn't trying to score on them. Sure, he's struggled against some top tier competition, but that's because they're top tier competition, after all.

At Okie State two years ago, he threw caution to the wind and tried to throw Boyd with a pretty big lead and it backfired. He went toe-to-toe with Dudley in the Big Ten finals and didn't back down. I wouldn't say he shut it down in that match. Just a couple of examples. He's been known to take chances that don't always pay off, but he does tend to take chances that most guys won't.

It may look to some like he's shutting it down against better competition. Instead, I'd say it's more a case of tougher opponents having better defense (and offense, for that matter), so it's naturally tougher for him to get to his offense as much against them. Overall, however, Sammy's an aggressive dude. He may struggle with Nickal, but I highly doubt it will be because he just comes out and shuts down his offense in an effort to keep it close. That's not the Sammy Brooks I've been watching for the last few years.

Just my guess.
Sammy and Bo both show up to wrestle and Bo wins a very entertaining wrestling match.

Kem-dog and Nolf. Kemerer gives the Hawkeye fans some hope through first half of the first period, but Nolf outpaces him and wins convincingly.
