(CNN)Young Americans have turned on Joe Biden.
That's the shocking finding of a Gallup analysis of its polling over the breadth of Biden's term released this week.

In the early days of Biden's presidency (from January 2021 to June 2021), an average of 6 in 10 adult members of Generation Z -- those born between 1997 and 2004 -- approved of the job Biden was doing. During the period spanning September 2021 to March 2022, that number had plummeted to an average of just 39%.

Among millennials -- those born between 1981 and 1996 -- the collapse is similarly stark. Biden's approval rating among that group stood at 60% in aggregated Gallup numbers in the first half of 2021, compared with 41% more recently.

That loss in confidence among young people was, interestingly, not as steep among older age groups. Over that same period, Biden's approval ratings among baby boomers -- those born between 1946 and 1964 -- dipped by only 7 points. Among "traditionalists" -- those born before 1946 -- his approval rating was unchanged.

Now, some of the discrepancy is because younger Americans were far more positive about Biden at the start of his presidency than older Americans. So there was just more room to fall.

At the same time, it's clear in other surveys that there has been a significant lessening of enthusiasm for Biden among younger Americans. A Quinnipiac poll released this week showed that just 21% of those aged 18 to 34 said they approved of the way the President was handling his job, while 58% disapproved.

By comparison, 36% of Americans aged 35 to 49 and 35% of Americans aged 50 to 64 approved of Biden's job performance. Among Americans 65 and over, 48% said the same.

What explains Biden's precipitous drop-off among young Americans? It's hard to pinpoint any one reason, but there's no question the delta between what young people expected out of the Biden presidency -- particularly when it came to dealing with Covid-19 -- and what they got is substantial.

As Gallup's Jeffrey Jones noted:

"By the summer [of 2021], as coronavirus cases unexpectedly rose, Biden had lost significant support among Generation Z, millennials and Generation X, ranging from seven- to 10-percentage-point drops."

Regardless of the reason, the fade in youth support for Biden is a major problem for Democrats. Especially when you consider that he won 60% of the youth vote -- those aged 18 to 34 -- in the 2020 presidential election, according to exit polls. It was, by far, his best performance among any age cohort.

Biden will capitulate on student debt to help fix the sagging numbers.

The Left has a new narrative they are pushing.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal: Student debt cancellation is 'racial justice,' 'gender justice,' 'economic justice'

Why do you think canceling student debt has come back up? It’s all about trying to buy future votes.

It's probably not an enjoyable experience being in that age group. They have a good job market but nothing to spend due to inflation and housing costs

He would need to do it before the election.

dangling that carrot in a campaign (which they will forget about after the election until the next campaign) will not work if the plan is to avoid a democratic bloodbath in the midterms.

Isn’t the longest running soap entitled, “ The Young and the Restless”? There is a reason for that.

Change doesn’t happen overnight...unless you are willing to enslave your self to someone else. Only out of chaos can change occur rapidly.
Our democracy’s designed to move slowly, as is our justice system.

No link, so I’ll take it with a grain of salt, but if she said that she’s an idiot.

LOL, the GOP are going to choose between Trump and DeSantis as their candidate. I'd be way more worried about that than whatever the Dems are doing. Those two are not winning candidates for 2024, no matter what @ihhawk stumbles across on Twitter
I think DeSantis would beat Biden. Remember, the GOP only needs a relative handful of votes in key states.

But Trump is destroying him in the polls. So the energy behind him seems limited.
That’s a fair point. Do MAGAs stay at home if Trump is pouting and tearing down DeSantis?

My guess is most will vote for the GOP candidate and any MAGA losses will be made up by independents who voted for Biden in 2020 simply to get Trump out of office.

I think most seasoned adults understood that a vote for Biden was essentially a cock block. Maybe the younger voters thought when they were buying the cereal, that they were also going to be getting the fruit in the picture on the box. Nope, just fiber and carbs.
Any fool knows Joe Biden is a traditional Democrat. Biden’s biggest advantage in 2020 was he wasn’t an asshat named Trump. Trump LOST America by being an asshole. Then he got his ass whipped in the election.m

I could be wrong and it wouldn’t be the first time, but I don’t see Biden being the candidate in 2024. Biden was simply the guy they pulled to be the front in order to beat Trump. The next round of primaries are going to be fascinating.

My point is that DeSantis has major problems. And I have a hard time seeing Ron steal away indies when he can't even beat a emotionally stunted moron like Trump. Who would get excited by him?

Rs better hope he's the nominee. If he gets primaried that would take a juggernaut of a campaigner like Obama.

That’s the million dollar question, just as it is for the GOP. This is why I think the primary season will be fascinating. Will Biden announce he’s not seeking a 2nd term or will he get challenged in the primaries (if I had to bet money right now, I’d bet that he announces). Then I think we’d see a more targeted version of what we saw last cycle.

On the GOP side, I’d look to Trump for the same thing - is he going to announce that he’s not running or is he going to get into the primaries? Everyone just lining up behind Trump or DeSantis if the other doesn’t challenge, but if they go to battle with each other in the primaries, it could open the door for still someone else.

It’s very easy to sit here today and look at a Biden-Trump rematch or Biden-DeSantis, but there’s a lot that has to happen for either of those matchups to happen.

I just looked it up on 538. In most polls, DeSantis runs neck and neck with Pence. He barely beats Trump Jr whenever he is in the poll. Even if Trump doesn't run, DeSantis in no way has the nomination locked up.

Again, though, Trump’s status will move the polls significantly. If Trump runs, DeSantis actually may not. If Trump doesn‘t, I think a significant chunk of his base shifts to DeSantis.

The most important ‘poll’ at this stage is who is the media focused on tearing down.
It ain’t Pence.

Can’t punk our youth anymore and it’s kind of refreshing. Even though most are liberals it’s nice to see they them say nice try I’m not falling for your shit. Would love for it to eventually lead to a four party system but that’s a pipe dream.

He is not giving them the free sh!t he promised. Bad Joe!
Tony nails it. Young people hate American Capitalism and are largely embracing socialism.

Michelle Obama will run AND win.

And we'll have eight more years of teeth gnashing from the Radical Right.
