WASHINGTON — President Biden will address the nation on Thursday, the White House said, laying out a “six-pronged strategy” to combat the coronavirus pandemic throughout the fall. The speech will likely mark a stark departure from the upbeat announcements of last spring, as vaccination rates rose and infection rates declined.

The Delta variant frustrated Biden’s plans for a “summer of freedom.” With cold weather approaching and children returning to school, he faces a challenge in telling Americans that the end is still in sight — but that he, and they, must do more to bring the pandemic to its conclusion.

Americans’ confidence in Biden’s handling of the pandemic is waning. A new poll from Gallup found that only 40 percent of Americans say the president is communicating clearly on the pandemic; 42 percent say he lacks clarity. “This is the first time Americans have not been more positive than negative about his communication, as a presidential candidate or president-elect in 2020 or as president this year,” Gallup senior editor Jeffrey M. Jones wrote of those results on Tuesday.

A senior administration official disputed the idea that the president is frustrated by the trajectory of the pandemic. Biden is “focused on getting more people vaccinated and putting an end to this virus,” the official said.

Thursday’s speech will come almost exactly six months since the president put the nation on a “war footing” against the coronavirus. “We’re making some real progress now,” he said during that address, delivered during primetime from the East Room of the White House.

Probably going to be. "Previous admin sucked, we've been doing great, but it's not enough!"

Half the country will cheer the rest of his speech, the other half will roll their eyes.

Joe needs a win.

no vaccine = no airline tickets.
no vaccine = no Amtrak
no vaccine = no student loans
no vaccine = no welfare
No vaccine = no social security.
No vaccine = no entering
No vaccine = deported if they are not US citizens.

Perfect example how the Biden administration's messaging on the pandemic has just been so poor:

Biden is “focused on getting more people vaccinated and putting an end to this virus,” the official said.

Vaccination will not put an end to this virus. This is setting up an expectation that this administration simply can't meet. It will be with us forever, and people will be infected with it forever.

Any policy with a goal to "end the virus" will be poorly reasoned, and will by necessity fail. "Zero Covid" is not an achievable outcome.

Perhaps they mean "put an end to the disruption and devastation this virus has caused." That would make sense, and vaccinations can rightly do that.

So, why the poor, incorrect wording?

If the idea is "well that's what he meant", is it not important enough to get the words right on this topic, considering it was a quote provided by an official? Considering that's two very different goals, with different requirements, and far different levels of possibility?

Or is the administration months behind the science, envisioning a pre-Delta "end to COVID" where vaccinations cause COVID to literally go away? I don't know of one credible scientists that, given the rate of transmission of Delta, thinks this is a endpoint. It's about reaching point, mostly through vaccination, that we live with COVID as an endemic like the flu, and go on with our normal lives. Is that what Biden's plan is driving for, or is it driving for a Zero Covid future?

This is not a Biden-specific criticism, it's been the same abject messaging and strategy failure across two administrations, the entire public health bureaucracy, and public health communication apparatus. We have to be way better than this.

If this is the question need answered, the answer is quite simple....and he is on TV damn near every week........Scott Gottlieb. The guy has been dead-on regarding the virus for over a year and a half now. He has been better than most...and pretty damned easy to understand.

At least Biden is giving it another try. I just have to wonder why his policies don't always follow the science, or why he doesn't implement some of his policies within the federal government in a timely fashion.

Biden should’ve signed an EO months ago in regards to air and train travel and being vaccinated.

Think he’ll hit todays new goal of zero emissions by 2020?

Probably some good ideas but the way our country is right now, that would be incendiary. Our country is very stupid.

This coming from the guy that says tornados are not called that anymore. You know, the ones that destroyed the farm fields in Iowa and the wetlands in Nevada.

Take away the Social Security mandate and you got yourself a goddamn deal.

I think those old bastards have paid into that their whole lives and that part wouldn't be right.

Rs won't vaccinate. That is the biggest problem. Until Rs vaccinate we will always been ruled over by covid.

Voter ID is so easy liar Dems will male up more Jim Crow References

Jim Crow laws were 100 % Democrats

The KKK was started by the Democrat Party
"Neither the Democratic nor the Republican parties of today are like their 19th century forebearers. By the late 1960s, the national Democratic Party had abandoned its former support for legal segregation and enjoyed strong support from Black voters, while Republicans had embraced a white backlash to voting and civil rights to build their party in the South."

We at least have to find a way to get people to stop needing the hospital.

The biggest reason this is unsustainable is the hospitals are over filled. People who need hospital beds for other perfectly treatable conditions can't get one. Some are dying as a result. Doctors and nurses are leaving their jobs due to burnout which is leading to even bigger staffing shortages.

Agree 100%. That's right to my point.

That's the right goal, and what they should say the goal is, not to "end the virus". Words do matter, especially when linked to policy.

40-60 years ago people would have went nuts if you didn’t let them get all the vaccines, because they saw the effects of not getting them.

being anti vax works great, because everybody else is. The problem is when your following gets too big.

I wonder if Ebola was a problem in the United States and there was a vaccine if people would still act tough when they saw thousands hemorrhage to death.

I love the idea of a payout or tax credit for getting back read by October 15th.

I would also like to see an update on if we can accelerate getting one of them approved for kids 6-12.

It’s been on the decline the past week. In 3 weeks we will be over the delta variant.

Yet still have the highest rate of death in the US. Stand up FL and pat yourselves on the back! Like I said, clean up your shit first until you worry for others

There is a reason Biden is doing this press conference. It’s because they saw what has happened with the southern states that got it first and are horrified what will happen up north later.
Florida has around 61% vaccination. The northern states are in the mid to high 60%.
This fall and winter will be ugly
