It hasn't ever been about equality for Megan or the women. They were offered the exact same contract as the men previously but turned it down to ensure they received benefits and a stable salary. The men only were getting paid if they played. Women were receiving their salary regardless. In addition the soccer federation was covering expenses for the women's pro league and wasn't doing the same for the MLS. Interesting thing they were doing considering the so called popularity claims made by women.....their pro league cannot support itself while the men's side does. Where are all those women's rights people in the stands for the pro women league? They are non-existent. In a truly equal situation that league is bankrupt.
In essence the women's team has traditionally lived off the revenue from the men's team. Their claims they are more successful when that success is actually evidence of just how equal women are and have been in this country is ironic. The teams they routinely thrash are from countries that do not have equal rights for women by and large and the players for those teams wouldn't make most college rosters. But hey go team for running up the score and celebrating after the tenth goal against Thailand. There has been tremendous progress made in the women's game and that should continue but it is disingenuous to believe our country has not treated our womens team remarkably well when compared to their peers. Tell me has Megan agreed to share her endorsement deals with her teammates? Does this new contract put more money in her pocket than her teamates? Yes to both. In addition players like Megan actively worked against being inclusive of younger players because doing so would have cut into their playing time. The women's national team is their primary source of personal income with the result being a culture where established players worked against new talent even to the point of getting rid of coaches that threatened that structure. It's why the our womens team got embarrassed in their last world cup.
