Over the past couple of years, I've heard more coaches, including some at Iowa, talk about the importance of big plays. The attached article really makes the case for their relationship to winning games (at the end of the "explosiveness" heading).

We saw creative, aggressive play calling from the Hawks last week. Today, I hope we take another step forward by using a tactic Hayden Fry used often-- going for the big play (throwing down the field in our case) on 2nd and short, assuming we have those situations. Going for the kill when we have smart chances could help to prevent ISU from loading the box-- and maybe totally demoralize them.
Yeah-- I'm a little too pumped for the game this afternoon-- and, no, I have never coached.
GO HAWKS!
