Big Ten finally penalizes MSU for antics

The Big Ten issued a $10,000 fine to Michigan State and publicly reprimanded the university, football coach Mark Dantonio, the University of Michigan and coach Jim Harbaugh for their actions during and after Saturday morning’s pregame confrontation at Spartan Stadium.

“We are fortunate the series of events that occurred prior to the Michigan-Michigan State game did not escalate into a much more serious matter,” league commissioner Jim Delany said in a statement. “While traditions hold great importance on our campuses, traditions do not supersede the values of good sportsmanship or the requirement for player safety. We expect more from our coaches, students and administrators and will continue to work with our institutions to prioritize good sportsmanship moving forward.”

League officials determined MSU violated the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy by walking across the field with linked arms “and initiated contact with multiple members of Michigan’s team who were legitimately on the field during pregame warmups,” according to a conference release. The monetary fine was due to this.

Dantonio was reprimanded “for failing to take action to mitigate a foreseeable conflict from occurring.”

The league reprimanded Michigan linebacker Devin Bush for his conduct, which included grinding his cleats repeatedly into the midfield logo and yelling at MSU players.

Interesting that UM's Bush was merely reprimanded for his conduct rather than actually penalized for it. Seems like a suspension of some sort might have been warranted. And I'm sure a $10,000 fine is sending quite a message to Dantonio and his gang.

And they should have. I don't mind the trash talking/taunting but purposely ruining the turf pissed me off.

Cheerscoach and I agree on something. 10,000? Wow! That will really teach them!
Suspending Dantonio would have been entirely appropriate and justifiable. MSU must have something on the B1G to constantly skate free of any consequences for their sleazery.

And just why was Harbaugh reprimanded? Was it something he said? Because he was not involved in any part of the incidents. As for Dantonio, he was there, he orchestrated it during Michigan’s time on the field, and he had his team wear their helmets as if he was expecting violence.

That didn't make a whole lot of sense. I guess it's because he didn't have control of Bush while he was doing his cleating of the logo. The whole thing was a petty thing typical of MSU. Doing their locked-arms, unity, this is our field walk at a time they knew Michigan would be there and forcing Michigan to "back down" is punk if you ask me.

Exactly. Harbaugh wasn’t even on or near the field, just a handful of Michigan players and some support staff.

First, there were only a few um players on the field and it was well before their established official warm up time. Second, MSU had a published schedule that was shared with um in advance and MSU was on time. There were reports in the media that MSU was late, but these were proven incorrect by time stamped media photos. Typical um bs thing to do, but MSU could have handled it better. Harbaugh should have been fined for his ridiculous rant and antagonist bs for several days afterwards.

I think these firm reprimands will insure this never happens again.

Has the Big Ten issued Dantonio a terse scolding regarding MSU's fake injuries yet?

Dantonio is Darth Vader. Was kind of hoping for an Indy rematch but looks like if we make it would be maybe Michigan on other side depending on whether Urban's headaches get any worse or not before they meet.

I’d like to see Dantonio piss off one of his players and get slapped across the face. One of those bright-red-handprint-on-the-cheek slaps. That sounds like a firecracker. And live on ESPN. Television gold it would be.

Why did the B1G office report that UM was "legitimately on the field during pre-game warmups" then?

Kind of interesting that the B1G takes this stand and hands out hand slaps when the commentators on BTN seemed to think the whole thing was pretty good.

I'm sure we agree on a lot of things, they just don't appear on message boards.

Not likely to happen. Dantonio is a "players coach" which translated means he lets them do whatever they want without consequence. Out of jail Tuesday, on the plane to the game Friday. He is a less successful and feebler, Montgomery Burns version of Tom Osborne.

So the B1G is wrong? If Harbaugh, who was out there, should be fined then Dantonio, who was right behind his players, should be suspended. Glad they lost in the end then fined and reprimanded.

One more reason why I appreciate Kirk and Iowa's program ... Shit like this doesn't happen at Iowa ...

I was going to say the same thing Russ...I am not a win at all costs type of fan. With everything that has gone on in the B1G recently regarding head coaches, I’m proud of the way KF represents the U of I. He’s all class...you never have to worry about him covering for a woman beater and then lying about it. You don’t have to worry about him justifying a player trying to rip up the opponents field or allowing a player to get arrested Thursday and play on Saturday. The level of d-baggery for B1G Head football coaches is at an all time high.

Did you go out of your way to get every fact in this post incorrect?

My guess is that it’s because he’s a gigantic bag of douche. But jmho.

I agree Clark (Rustys Dad)

However I do think the fine and reprimands were appropriate. If it happens again the punishment for MSU should be a lot more. Harbaugh should have done more to control/ punish Devin Bush

When I keep referring to the OSU game last year, all you have to do is watch the second play OSU runs. The first play they ran was the pick6.
