Let’s take a look at where each Big Ten head coach finds themselves according to CBS Sports entering 2022.

Click the link above for full details on each coach and how their situation is viewed, otherwise here's the ratings:

23 years and he is still not untouchable?

If KF has a losing season this year, there would be a large vocal group stating things like: "He is too old, and the game has passed him by." "He has started a downward trend just like Fry's last few years." "His offensive scheme will not allow the recruitment of QB's and WR's." "Other teams are using his age as a reason for a recruit not to go to Iowa." ETC.

Well of course. But, what have we had, like two losing seasons since 2000? It certainly won't happen this year. Iowa's more likely to go 12-0 than 5-7.

He is going to get 5 years even if we go 0-60. Buyout is prohibitive, almost fully gtd thru. ‘29. This is as untouchable as it gets in college football.

I think you evaluate them based off what would happen if their team finished a few games under expectations. So saying that here is what I think would happen if their team finished with the following record:

Fitz: 3-9. Still 0. Nobody will even whisper that he isn't the right guy.

Kirk: 6-6. 2. With the incoming recruits everyone will give him a pass, especially with a new Qb in 2023. Although BF may not survive because him and SP will take all the heat.

Allen: 4-8. 3.5. He gets 1 more year to turn it around.

Fleck: 5-7. 3. He gets another year but better produce.

Frost: He really needs to go atleast 8-4, maybe 9-3 to keep his job. He is fired if he doesn't.

Franklin: 7-5: 3. They don't tolerate losing like that.

Day: 8-4. 3.5, maybe a 4. You will see how quickly everyone turns on him.

Locksley: 3-9. 4. He has never proven he can coach and his borrowed time will be nearly up. May not even get another year.

Chryst: 6-6. 3.5. With their drop in talent and their steady decline, he will be on the hot seat going into 2023. He will get another year or 2, but the grumbling will be loud.

Brohm: who cares. I hate Purdue. They are obviously fine with having a team that can beat anyone in the B1G and still make it to the Music City Bowl. Good for them.

Bielema: 2-10. 1.5. He is building something there and will have time to get his guys in.

Schiano: 1-11. 0. Doesn't matter. Guy is a good coach that has experience taking this team to respectability from the ashes, so he will be just fine because he is better than anyone they have ever had and better than anyone they could get.

Harbaugh: 7-5. 2. He gets a pass. Just beat OSU, took them to the CFP and has identity. There may be some people that float the question, but overall he will be there as long as he wants. He is the Kirk of Michigan.

Tucker: 6-6. 2. I will say this may happen, would not surprise me if this team doesn't make a bowl. But they gave the guy a Brincks truck so they will be patient with him, but, there will be some questioning if he is the long term solution. Some guys are just great at coming in and fixing problems, changing culture, etc and getting immediate results but aren't necessarily good at maintaining a program from a different perspective, like when you are the hunter and not the hunted. We will see.

So that is a different perspective as to who really has job security in my eyes.

And worse things would be said about every coach that’s a 0/1 other than Fitz and maybe Brohm.

Winning cures a lot of ills. I don't see it happening, but if losses ensue and the offense continues the trend it's been on (getting worse from an efficiency perspective every year since Brian became OC) pressure is going to quickly build to make a change of OC which of course Kirk isn't going to consider. That's when things might get interesting ala Jeff Bowden at FSU. The FSU offense tanked after he was promoted by Bobby to OC. After several years of futility and an embarrassing home shutout to Wake Forest he "resigned" with a significant severance package.

Loved the write up, but damn that was hard on the eyes …don’t be afraid to use that return key, there’s no surcharge ;) o_O

That must be a pretty dynamic list, just a couple of years ago people would have said Harbaugh was a 3 or 4. A playoff berth buys you a lot of good will.
I'd also have to think Locksey and Allen would move up unless they have a bowl-game type season this fall.

It could be fun watching Frosty melt down this fall...real fun.

Recruiting is just fine. If we lose because QB play though...lots of folks gonna be pissed he refused to get a transfer QB.

That and bf will likely be a huge focus.

Any list like this that puts Ferentz on the same level as Fleck and Brohm is just bullshit. Ferentz has weathered bad seasons, staff turnover, etc., yet still gets to the B1G chanpionship ever so often and plays in New Year's Day almost annually. Neither Fleck nor Brohm can say that. Brohm's biggest claim to fame is his ability to beat Iowa as of late. Otherwise his teams almost always invariably find ways to lose big B1G games, especially late in the season. The game that saves them every year is the series with Indiana. Kind of like what Iowa's series with Nebraska has turned into, Indiana is usually a pussy cat by the time November comes around.

It's less the QB...than how they are used/coached. Get the ball to Arland Bruce IV and Keagan Johnson.

Fitz being a 0 is more damning of Northwestern than anything positive for Fat Pat.
Yeah it's interesting. Looking at his body of work, at Northwestern, he's done a really good job. Three 10-win seasons, two West titles, several bowl wins. At a school with high academic standards and a high school stadium to play in.

But two 3-win seasons in the last 3 years. Chryst and KF are both very entrenched, but if that happened at Iowa or Wisconsin the long knives would be out. There's a faction of Wisconsin fans (not sure how many) that would like Chryst gone now and Leohnard made the head coach. Leohnard has turned down NFL coordinator jobs to stay at Wisconsin in the last couple of years.

Northwestern's offense recently when they haven't had a good QB has been really bad. When they have a good QB, they seem to make enough plays to pull out close games. That first game against Nebraska is so crucial for both programs. Northwestern has Duke, Miami (Ohio) and Southern Illinois all at home for its OOC games and their conference slate is not easy. They get Penn State, OSU and Maryland. Road games at Penn State and Maryland. Plus they play at Iowa, at Minnesota and at Purdue. 6 wins seems a tall order this year.

Tom Allen has to be a 3. Another 'shit the bed' year in 2022 and he will be at 4 or 5 going into winter.

Allen benefits to some degree from the fact that football will always be #2 behind hoops at IU. The sense of urgency to win is more around basketball. That said, you're right. His leash is short.

If conference re-alignment teaches us anything, it's that football pays most of the bills, even at IU, UCLA, Duke, NC and Kansas.

Funny thing is, Indiana, Northwestern, Illinois, and Minnesota are usually difficult HC positions to fill with good Head Coaches. Allen, Fitz, Beliema, and Fleck are probably as good a HC as those programs will every hire.

I know I could look this up, but what do those coaches make per year?
