Well, it's unanimous. Indiana is the clear favorite to win the B1G.

On October 4, Joe Lunardi came out with his latest preseason Bracketology. He has 8 B1G teams, including Iowa, in the NCAA Tournament.

Note how close Lunardi & the B1G media predictions are.

Here is a comparison of how the Top 9 B1G Teams are regarded:

On paper, IU should be very tough. It has been a while since they lived up to expectations. Predictions are actually very similar.

Another preseason poll that's been put out is "The Almanac" by Field of 68, Three Man Weave and a few other contributors. Jeff Goodman took the lead for the Big Ten section.

1. Indiana
2. Illinois
3. Michigan
4. Ohio State
5. Iowa
6. Mich St
7. Purdue
8. Rutgers
9. Penn St
10. Wisconsin

14. Nebraska

If we can stay healthy and get through the pre conference schedule in reasonably good shape, I really like our B10 schedule and think we could finish pretty high in the B10 this year.

What they think of Iowa: Kris Murray and Patrick McCaffery. The only mentions in the best in conference picks.

Frankly, I hope they maintain that outlook and sleep on us. Cuz I see a lot of options I would consider as more than serviceable. And if we play as a team, I see us surpassing some teams projected in front of us.

Go earn your respect, young men (Connor not included)

Heres another chance for Fran to garner some COY mention. If he outperforms the outlook, he should.

5th? I will take it

And that's the first list I have seen the top 9 including PSU and not Wisconsin

I wonder how long it will take for Maryland to be a top team in the B1G again.....

With how MD has been recruiting under their new head coach, I'd say they will be back in two years.

The Iowa writer was the only one to pick his own team first. And the only one to pick Murray as POY.

Doesn’t mean he is wrong. Could happen. Just interesting.

IF the Hawks - as a team - can perform the way they did in the final 1 to 1.5 months of the last B1G season, they are definitely gonna have a little something for Indiana, Purdue and the other top-tier teams in the conference this season.

I think Iowa will end up much closer to a Top4 finish, vs a Top8, than most non-Iowa people want to admit. Time will tell.

Five CBS Sports writers made their B1G picks.

Iowa's predicted finish:
8th--two writers
7th--one writer
6th--one writer
3rd--one writer

Overall, this is the B1G predicted order of finish:

1. Illinois
2. Indiana
3. Michigan
4. Purdue
5. Michigan State
6. Ohio State
7. IOWA
8. Rutgers
9. Wisconsin
10. Maryland

14. Minnesota

Big Ten most underrated team

Iowa

Doubt Fran McCaffery at your own peril, but he has suffered just one losing season in Big Ten play over the past 10 years. If the two members of our panel who project the Hawkeyes to finish eighth are correct, then this team will likely fall short of that well-established precedent. That sort of projection is an understandable knee-jerk reaction to Iowa losing Keegan Murray and Jordan Bohannon. But Ahron Ulis and Tony Perkins look amply capable of taking huge strides in the backcourt to replace Bohannon, and Keegan Murray has a literal twin brother named Kris waiting to emerge as a potential NBA Draft lottery pick. Their games may not be identical, but Kris is in for the type of breakout season that Keegan enjoyed last season. The Hawkeyes may not repeat as Big Ten Tournament champions, but they have everything they need to finish in the league's upper tier again.

Bir Ten media predictions in football, were all but one predicting Wisconsin as Big Ten West top team. I would not put much stock in any of their predictions

Really good column. As Jon writes, 15 of the B1G’s Top 20 scorers from a year ago are gone. There’s a lot uncertainty and a lot of questions. He also helps explain why most have IU winning the regular season championship.

5 Questions Entering the Big Ten

by Jon Rothstein
College Basketball Insider for CBS Sports since 2010

5. Who is the sleeper?
Iowa. That may sound weird to say about a team that won the Big Ten Tournament last March and was a two seed in the NCAA Tournament two years ago, but it’s the utmost truth. Despite going a combined 48-19 over the past two seasons, Fran McCaffery’s ability to annually replenish talent still doesn’t get the respect that it deserves. A year ago, Iowa lost Luka Garza, Joe Wieskamp, and CJ Fredrick, but still managed to win the Big Ten Tournament title and earn a five seed in the NCAA Tournament. Don’t be shocked if the Hawkeyes are again in the mix at the top of this conference. Keegan Murray is gone, but the Hawkeyes return five of their top eight scorers from a 26-win team, headlined by Kris Murray (9.7 points, 4.3 rebounds) — the brother of Keegan Murray — who is primed to take a major step. Six other players on Iowa’s roster — Patrick McCaffery, Connor McCaffery, Tony Perkins, Payton Sandfort, Filip Rebraca, Ahron Ulis — return after averaging double figure minutes last season. This program isn’t going anywhere.

4. Is Illinois a mystery team?
It certainly feels that way. For the past three seasons, the Illini had a massive piece in the middle in 7-foot center Kofi Cockburn. Now, they’re aiming to put a lineup on the floor that features five interchangeable pieces. Illinois is also counting on four freshmen — Skyy Clark, Jayden Epps, Sencire Harris, Ty Rodgers — and three transfers — Matthew Mayer (Baylor), Dain Dainja (Baylor), and Terrence Shannon Jr. (Texas Tech) — to play significant roles. The Illini’s top returning scorer from last season is 6-10 junior Coleman Hawkins, who averaged 5.9 points and 4.3 rebounds a year ago. It feels like a complete makeover in Champaign. Illinois lost its top five scorers from last year’s team that won a share of the Big Ten regular season title.

3. How big of a jump will Zach Edey make for Purdue?
It all depends on how many minutes he plays. The 7-4, 295 pound big man averaged 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds last season in just 19 minutes. Could he play 25 a night now that Trevion Williams is no longer a member of Purdue’s program? Will Edey’s size and physical stature allow him to play that long every game? It’s all stuff that we’re going to find out. Despite the loss of Williams, the Boilers still have a bevy of additional post options aside from Edey in Caleb Furst, Mason Gillis, and redshirt freshman Trey Kauffman-Renn. Nevertheless, if Edey can play a few more minutes each time he takes the floor, averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds as a junior is a real possibility.

2. Will Indiana be able to handle expectations?
That’s TBD. The Hoosiers return 90.9 percent of their scoring from last season, headlined by All-American big man Trayce Jackson-Davis (18.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.3 blocks). Indiana also added a pair of five-star freshmen in Jalen Hood-Schifino and Malik Reneau. Can the Hoosiers quickly adapt to being the biggest game on each opponent’s schedule just one year after it finished ninth in the conference and started the NCAA Tournament in the First Four? It’s going to be a process. Mike Woodson took a major step in his first season as Indiana’s head coach by leading his alma mater to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016. His second season will be evaluated on whether or not this program can compete for a Big Ten regular season title and have a chance to win multiple games in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

1. Has there been a passage in the Big Ten?
Without question. 15 of the Big Ten’s Top 20 scorers from a year ago are gone. The conference’s top returning scoring guard is Northwestern’s Boo Buie (14.1 points). There’s more uncertainty than known commodities entering the Big Ten this season and that should make for an incredibly exciting year. Don’t be shocked if the teams that are picked first, second, and third in the league’s preseason poll are flipped with the teams that are picked fourth, fifth, and sixth at the end of the season. It feels like it’s going to be that type of year in the Big Ten.

This. Since Year 3 Fran has had us consistently in the Top 6. When will he get some respect? Looking at recruiting classes.............

Last night I had a dream that Keegan came back, yet Kris was MVP. How is that possible, when I have Kris scoring 12-14 PPG, and less explosive? I don't know the answer.

Go Hawks!!!

I agree with Rothstien …which scares me because he’s easily one of the worst CBB analysts out there.

Tend to agree. There's really no good reason to value their opinions more than any other reasonably informed fan.

he seems to know the teams very well across the nation

and i think his latest column on the B1G was pretty good

he's got the job with CBS for a reason, right?

imo, of course....

Iowa considered a top 2 B1G team here:

OCTOBER 23,2022

Jeff Goodman’s Final Preseason Top 25 for 2022-23

11. INDIANA

BACK:
F Trayce Jackson-Davis (Sr., 18.3 ppg, 8.1 rpg), G Xavier Johnson (Sr., 12.1 ppg, 5.1 apg), F Race Thompson (Sr., 11.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg), G Miller Kopp (Sr., 6.0 ppg), G Trey Galloway (Sr., 5.5 ppg), G Jordan Geronimo (Sr., 4.4 ppg), G Tamar Bates (Soph., 3.9 ppg), G Anthony Leal (Sr., 1.9 ppg), C Logan Duncomb (Jr., 0.7 ppg)
GONE: G Parker Stewart (6.2 ppg), G Robert Phinisee (4.5 ppg), F Michael Durr (1.5 ppg), G Khristian Lander (2.9 ppg)
ADD: G Jalen Hood-Schifino (No. 22), PF Malik Reneau (No. 27), PF Kaleb Banks (No. 83), SG CJ Gunn

With Jackson-Davis returning to Bloomington, Mike Woodson and the Hoosiers have most of their key pieces back from an NCAA tourney team. They also added a couple of talented freshmen in Hood-Schifino and Reneau, and that makes IU the pick to win the Big Ten.

20. IOWA

BACK:
F Patrick McCaffery (RS Jr., 10.5 ppg), F Kris Murray (Jr., 9.7 ppg), G Tony Perkins (Jr., 7.4 ppg), C Filip Rebraca (RS Sr., 5.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg), F Payton Sandfort (Soph., 5.0 ppg), PG Ahron Ulis (Jr., 3.1 ppg), G Connor McCaffery (Grad, 2.5 ppg), F Riley Mulvey (Soph., 0.9 ppg)
GONE: F Keegan Murray (23.5 ppg, 8.7 rpg), G Jordan Bohannon (11.0 ppg), G Joe Toussaint (4.3 ppg)
ADD: PG Dasonte Bowen, G Josh Dix, G Dante Eldridge

Sure, the Hawkeyes lost two huge contributors in Murray and Bohannon. But Fran McCaffery brings back plenty of talent and experience with Patrick McCaffery, Kris Murray and Perkins, who should all be double-digit guys. Rebraca is an experienced big who knows his role, while Sandfort could be a breakout guy. The key is point guard play and whether Ulis and Bowen can combine to be solid and limit their mistakes.

22. OHIO STATE

BACK:
F Zed Key (Jr., 7.8 ppg), G Eugene Brown (Jr., 3.5 ppg), F Justice Sueing (Sr., did not play), F Kalen Etzler (Fr.)
GONE: F E.J. Liddell (19.4 ppg), G Malaki Branham (13.7 ppg), G Jamari Wheeler (7.1 ppg), F Kyle Young (8.2 ppg), F Justin Ahrens (4.8 ppg), G Cedric Russell (4.2 ppg), G Meechie Johnson Jr. (4.4 ppg), C Joey Brunk (2.4 ppg), G Jimmy Sotos (1.8 ppg), F Seth Towns
ADD: SG Roddy Gayle Jr. (No. 41), PG Bruce Thornton (No. 42), C Felix Okpara (No. 57), SF Brice Sensabaugh (No. 60), G Isaac Likekele (Oklahoma State, 7.1 ppg), G Sean McNeil (West Virginia, 12.2 ppg), G Tanner Holden (Wright State, 20.1 ppg), SG Bowen Hardman

It’s a revamped roster with the early departure of Liddell and Branham, but Chris Holtmann has reloaded through the portal with guys like Likekele, McNeil and Holden, and also with a strong recruiting class that has four top-75 guys.

25. ILLINOIS

BACK:

OCTOBER 23,2022

Jeff Goodman’s Final Preseason Top 25 for 2022-23

11. INDIANA

BACK:
F Trayce Jackson-Davis (Sr., 18.3 ppg, 8.1 rpg), G Xavier Johnson (Sr., 12.1 ppg, 5.1 apg), F Race Thompson (Sr., 11.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg), G Miller Kopp (Sr., 6.0 ppg), G Trey Galloway (Sr., 5.5 ppg), G Jordan Geronimo (Sr., 4.4 ppg), G Tamar Bates (Soph., 3.9 ppg), G Anthony Leal (Sr., 1.9 ppg), C Logan Duncomb (Jr., 0.7 ppg)
GONE: G Parker Stewart (6.2 ppg), G Robert Phinisee (4.5 ppg), F Michael Durr (1.5 ppg), G Khristian Lander (2.9 ppg)
ADD: G Jalen Hood-Schifino (No. 22), PF Malik Reneau (No. 27), PF Kaleb Banks (No. 83), SG CJ Gunn

With Jackson-Davis returning to Bloomington, Mike Woodson and the Hoosiers have most of their key pieces back from an NCAA tourney team. They also added a couple of talented freshmen in Hood-Schifino and Reneau, and that makes IU the pick to win the Big Ten.

20. IOWA

BACK:
F Patrick McCaffery (RS Jr., 10.5 ppg), F Kris Murray (Jr., 9.7 ppg), G Tony Perkins (Jr., 7.4 ppg), C Filip Rebraca (RS Sr., 5.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg), F Payton Sandfort (Soph., 5.0 ppg), PG Ahron Ulis (Jr., 3.1 ppg), G Connor McCaffery (Grad, 2.5 ppg), F Riley Mulvey (Soph., 0.9 ppg)
GONE: F Keegan Murray (23.5 ppg, 8.7 rpg), G Jordan Bohannon (11.0 ppg), G Joe Toussaint (4.3 ppg)
ADD: PG Dasonte Bowen, G Josh Dix, G Dante Eldridge

Sure, the Hawkeyes lost two huge contributors in Murray and Bohannon. But Fran McCaffery brings back plenty of talent and experience with Patrick McCaffery, Kris Murray and Perkins, who should all be double-digit guys. Rebraca is an experienced big who knows his role, while Sandfort could be a breakout guy. The key is point guard play and whether Ulis and Bowen can combine to be solid and limit their mistakes.

22. OHIO STATE

BACK:
F Zed Key (Jr., 7.8 ppg), G Eugene Brown (Jr., 3.5 ppg), F Justice Sueing (Sr., did not play), F Kalen Etzler (Fr.)
GONE: F E.J. Liddell (19.4 ppg), G Malaki Branham (13.7 ppg), G Jamari Wheeler (7.1 ppg), F Kyle Young (8.2 ppg), F Justin Ahrens (4.8 ppg), G Cedric Russell (4.2 ppg), G Meechie Johnson Jr. (4.4 ppg), C Joey Brunk (2.4 ppg), G Jimmy Sotos (1.8 ppg), F Seth Towns
ADD: SG Roddy Gayle Jr. (No. 41), PG Bruce Thornton (No. 42), C Felix Okpara (No. 57), SF Brice Sensabaugh (No. 60), G Isaac Likekele (Oklahoma State, 7.1 ppg), G Sean McNeil (West Virginia, 12.2 ppg), G Tanner Holden (Wright State, 20.1 ppg), SG Bowen Hardman

It’s a revamped roster with the early departure of Liddell and Branham, but Chris Holtmann has reloaded through the portal with guys like Likekele, McNeil and Holden, and also with a strong recruiting class that has four top-75 guys.

25. ILLINOIS

BACK:
F Coleman Hawkins (Jr., 5.9 ppg), G RJ Melendez (Soph., 3.8 ppg), G Luke Goode (Soph., 2.0 ppg), C Brandon Lieb (Jr., 0.8)

That could easily flip, the talent across these teams is pretty even, just younger at IL. And this group doesn't even include Michigan, MI State, Purdue or WI. They will make noise, too. It's going to be a fun year in the B1G.

Goodman isn't the world's premier basketball expert. But I will add that he and others wrote a preseason mag detailing all of D1. Goodman was directly responsible for writing the B1G portion of the magazine. So he's taken a lot of time directly interviewing every B1G coach about their thoughts on their team or the conference in general. Which makes his poll one of the more interesting ones (for the B1G at least).

I don't really care if writers pick us middle of the pack, but some of the explanations leave a lot to be desired...

Hate to see injuries.

Goode apparently started for them during their "secret" scrimmage this weekend against KU, though I think most people expected him to come off the bench. Good 3 point shooter--was likely going to play a similar role to what Payton did last season. Seems like most reports expect him back sometime in mid-January.

Jeff Goodman thinks Iowa will be even better than he originally thought. He now has Iowa at #16 in the country. Sweet 16 here we come! ;)

As you can see, he has Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State and Illinois as his top 4 B1G teams.
