Big Ten Releases Pre-Seeds for Conference Tournament

IOWA CITY, Iowa
– Eight University of Iowa wrestlers were seeded fourth or better when the Big Ten Conference released its tournament pre-seeds for the 2022 Big Ten Championships set for Saturday and Sunday in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Defending Big Ten champions Jaydin Eierman and Alex Marinelli are two of five Hawkeyes entering the tournament as the No. 2 seed. Eierman is No. 2 at 141 pounds and Marinelli is second at 165. They’re joined on the No. 2 line by Austin DeSanto (133), Kaleb Young (157) and Tony Cassioppi (285).

Defending conference tournament champion Michael Kemerer (174) is one of three Hawkeyes seeded fourth. He’s joined by Max Murin at 149 and Jacob Warner at 197. All eight wrestlers seeded fourth or better return to a postseason lineup that won the 2021 Big Ten and 2021 NCAA championships.

Abe Assad, who missed the 2021 postseason but wrestled at 184 when Iowa won the 2020 Big Ten title, returns to the postseason lineup as the No. 5 seed at 184. Freshman Drake Ayala is making his postseason debut as the No. 6 seed at 125.

The Hawkeyes are the two-time defending Big Ten Conference tournament champions. Iowa has 37 conference team titles, more than twice as many as the next school (Illinois, 17). Eierman, Marinelli and Kemerer are defending Big Ten champions. Marinelli is a three-time defending champion seeking to become the eighth Hawkeye in program history to win four conference titles.

The complete tournament brackets and official seeds will be released Friday afternoon following the Big Ten Conference coaches meeting. For more information on the 2022 Big Ten Wrestling Championships visit bigten.org.

Pretty good draws all around... Kem probably got the worst of it? he and Warner can both beat any of the 3 before them. Wish Schultz wasn't at home for this, but it won't be as pro-husker crowd as it was last time.

Release notes say Assad is 6th, but 84 listings have him in the 5 spot, or am i missing something? I think the 6 spot is probably a little better, tbh..

Edit: sounds like the 5 seed.. darn. Maybe Brands can argue him down a spot :)

don't love young likely having berge in the quarters. berge won that last time.

Kem got hurt by wrestling and losing, and Murin got hurt by not wrestling and beating the two in front of him. You have to beat them all to be champ, but facing the #1 seed at the B1G tourney hurts your NCAA seed unless you beat him. Those two both need a big win in the semis, or they'll pay at nattys, seed-wise.

Good call, i didnt even get down that far on the list, was just thinking about this year. KY seems to have things rolling right now, hopefully it continues

Berge has to beat Model first. I know he has some bad losses but he did beat Brayton Lee 10-5 earlier this year
actually a scary match up off the scale if that cut is an issue at all. model is not great, but has a huge tank. he frequently storms back in third period to make matches close. usually still loses against good guys, but did pull it off against lee this year.

As a whole I would be ok with all these seeds holding up.
125 is perfect imo for Drake
133 is what it should be
141 is good and Seabass sounds like he is banged up
149 is what it should be for Max, now go get Sasso
157 knock Berge to the backside and hopefully he doesn't qualify (win/win)
165 will be a tough semi and finals, but the Bull has shined at B10s
174 this is the worst draw for the team, but it is the correct spot for Kem. Beat them when it matters
184 would prefer the 6, but Abe is lucky to get that high of a seed imo
197 I like this spot for Warner. I think he matches up the best against Schultz out of the top 3.
285 I really like this spot with Kerk as the 3. Beat PSU heads up, don't expect someone else to do it for us.

Go earn better seeds at NCAA's and beat PSU doing it. I can't wait!

Mostly agree.
125,133,149,184,197, 285 YES

Seabass is banged up. Watched the last RU match. he came out strong and faded, almost took inj time. Still very good, but you would have to go through him in any case.

Young should handle Burger, if he doesn't, he is in some trouble!

Bull has one more shot to win two more tournaments. He has been great at B1Gs his whole career, time to be great again!

I rather see KemDawg get the staller in the semis. I believe he has a better shot when the refs aren't so afraid to call the stall!!

Warner has Brucki before he should worry about Schultz. Abe has a pretty tough 1st match.

I agree, but honestly I think Warner is a coin flip 1 point match from the quarters on. He just won't let it fly against the better guys, which leads to 1 takedown matches against the better competition. Some he wins, some he loses. Abe needs to bring it or he is really going to be in trouble seed wise at NCAA's.

Not an easy road, but definitely there for Iowa's taking, especially given the number of h2h matches we could see.

125 #6 Drake Ayala - Upside potential here
133 #2 Austin DeSanto - if he turns those stalemates in TDs, even just once, it might be enough to solve the RBY puzzle. def not banking on it

141 #2 Jaydin Eierman - about the same as above.
149 #4 Max Murin - anywhere from 3-6 seems likely, unless that Sasso match wasn't a fluke, but a sign of things to come
157 #2 Kaleb Young - probably the most downside risk here, because of the nature of his close matches. Maybe he can channel the 2019 NCAAs

165 #2 Alex Marinelli - the prohibitive favorite, and a b10 title with revenge will be sweet.
174 #4 Michael Kemerer - second to last go round. he got his b10 title last year, another would be sweet, but honestly just hope he stays healthy through bigs

184 #6 Abe Assad - probably the greatest variablility here. Still believe in him, and could see him getting 3rd without squinting much, but could also see a situation where I'm glad 12 qualify at this (brutal) weight class

197 #4 Jacob Warner - if the matches were 5 minutes, or each wrestler had one 'undo'. he might be the favorite. second greatest variablility here? almost wish he got dean earlier, so he could potentially steal some points from PSU.

285 #2 Tony Cassioppi - dont expect the match with Kerk to be as smooth sailing this time, but a victory is probably necessary for the team race, otherwise it puts Tony likely in 4th. If not for DelGarbino, he'd be in prime position for the national 2 seed.. losses against GS shouldn't even count, bc I can't see anybody beating him.

I can guarantee you Starcrap does not like seeing Kem in the semis either.
Matchups are definitely a thing. He hammers Labs, but has a hard time with Massa (Beat him in SV at B10s in 2021 and 2-1 in 2022) and obviously has had 3 very close matches with KemDog.

I might be wrong but I dont remember Kem ever winning the B10s. Hope he does this year.

he does not hammer labs. they've wrestled one time and it was a sudden victory win when labriola inexplicably tried to jump over top of starocci in OT. he wrestles extremely close matches with all of those guys.

His only match with labs was extremely close
Read these posts and remembered Star sticking Labriola,. Went back and looked it up for confirmation. So as ut turns out Mark Hall stuck Labs. I’m wrong and also racist apparently. SMH.

Fun watching Kem's match from last year's B1G tourney. Great match for him. It also served as a reminder about how poorly he wrestled in the NCAA finals. Sadly, the style of the match fell into Stallrocci's game plan. Definitely not the same Kemdawg we saw @ Big Tens.

I'd love to see him gut out an NCAA championship (ala Cory Clark). It'd be great for the team but want it more for Grandpa Mike. He's been a warrior.

According to the d-bag Mineo, SeaBass got screwed. He should be the 1 and nobody can stop him...
I think he only claimed Seabass should be the two which makes no sense. The argument would be more valid if he claimed Seabass should be the #1 since Nick Lee ducked him.

The kid thinks there is an Iowa bias. I don't think anyone has ever accused him of being a genius.
