Won't matter once BIG play starts. RPI will shoot up due to SOS because the BIG is stacked even with Maryland in a slump.

Won't matter once BIG play starts. RPI will shoot up due to SOS because the BIG is stacked even with Maryland in a slump.

I wonder if you read my earlier post to be talking about IOWA's NET/RPI, rather than conference NET/RPI. Or perhaps I don't understand how conference RPI/conference NET are calculated [a real possibility]. I thought that conference victories do essentially nothings for conference RPI/conference NET, because for every conference victory, there is a conference loss. Once conference play starts, my assumption is that the only meaningful way to improve conference RPI/conference NET is if the teams the conference beat in the non-conference season do much better, e.g., a team a conference team beat goes from being a quad 2 team when the game was played, to quad 1 team later.

Also, if you're theory is right that conference RPI will shoot up once BIG play starts, the Big Ten wouldn't have ended up 5th last year in both conference RPI/conference NET (behind the Pac-12, SEC, ACC and Big 12). The top of the BIG was the strongest last year that it has been in a long time.

Conference RPI is calculated as the average of the cumulative RPI of the teams within the conference. The RPI was lower last year because the league was top heavy as you mentioned. There wasn't much of a middle. It's also important to play a balanced schedule in the non-conference. Right now the BIG has 6 teams in the RPI top 50 with Penn St knocking at the door at 64. If the bottom doesn't fall out, the BIG RPI should be stronger this year. Currently the BIG RPI is 2nd.

. . . Currently the BIG RPI is 2nd.
Pretty fluid at the moment. With Wisconsin loss today, BIG RPI/NET falls to 4th (as of 12/3 at 4:15 p.m.). If OSU beats Tennessee this afternoon, may jump back up. Conference NET/RPI shouldn’t be a big deal for Iowa this year, but can impact seeding and tourney bubble teams.

A glance at realtimerpi shows that the b1g looks down this year. But those rankings will change as more data flows in. The big10 has dropped a lot of the top matchups this year.

Oh well, NC State jumped Iowa to be No. 3 in the latest AP rankings. Iowa stayed at No. 4.
NC State has gone from unranked in week 1 all the way to No. 3.
