If you like marijuana, Ann Arbor is the place for you! Hell, they were acting like it was legal there 20 years before it actually became so(it is legal now in MI).....

Blimpy and Casey's are two very good burger joints really close. I can't guarantee they won't be ridiculously hard to get into....

Casey's is also a pretty cool bar if you can stand crazy Wolverine fans ;) The Last Word is pretty cool, for a more upscale food and drink feel, but it is pretty small and not sure if you could get in there either.

With that said a BUNCH of places are off Main St. just south of Huron, which are all about a bit less than a mile north of Crisler. If you don't want to go that way you could try Fraser's. Its about the same distance but to the east. Biercamp(If you like micro-breweries and sausage this is probably your spot) is probably the closet and you can get a good look at the golf course if you go that way!

Edited to add: Also, in MI, especially college towns, UBER is your best friend. I am not sure the wait won't be a bit more with the Tournament going on, but I would still think they can get you where you want and back a lot easier and the price is very reasonable!

Do you know of any places that would show the UFC matches?
Being partial to green and white I don’t frequent that area for any sort of evening sporting event, lol. But, I would think most of the bars/pubs closest to campus would if asked…

Unless you are talking paper view. We have some crazy rules about that in Michigan and I know the cost can be quite prohibitive to many. So, if that is the case, I would suggest making a list of places(google is your friend) and simply calling them and ask.

When is everyone driving up? Forecast says 4 inches snow in Ann Arbor on Friday

Seriously? And we took skiing Friday off the table to help defray costs for NCAAs and because snow has been scarce in that area this Winter. Ugh!

Since we're not skiing, we're leaving around 9AM Friday and meeting a friend that lives in the Detroit area for supper Friday night. He offered to let us stay at his place to save motel money, but it's 40 minutes drive and our motel is 4 miles from the arena, so the weather will help with that decision too. It's supposed to be snowing here when we leave, I hope we're not in it all the way. It seems like every time we go to Michigan for wrestling , it snows. The last time I skied there (one of the times time B1Gs were in East Lansing), it snowed 6 inches in five hours. It took just over an hour to get to Mt. Brighton, and two and a half to get back. Cars were sliding into ditches and the median all over the place.

Any other spots hawks fans are planning on hitting up? We are getting close! Just hope the snow doesn't make Friday's drive miserable....

If you can afford a bit of extra time, it looks like champagne, Indianapolis, Columbus are all only expecting rain. So you don’t have to go too much further south to get out of the snow.

Forecasts are starting to tweak the temperature up a bit, so it looks like a majority of it will now be rain instead of snow. We exclusively use salt so I wouldn't expect the main roads to be much of a hindrance if the temp holds in the mid 30's as currently expected...

Where is the best pizza, preferably New York style, thin and greasy, within walking distance of the arena, or at least a short enough drive to hit between sessions? I'd prefer not to pay to park multiple times a day, if they're charging.

Joe's Pizza(NYC) is what you want pizza wise, but I don't think it is the length of walk you are looking for. The walk is about a mile and half as the crow flies. Really, just straight up pizza places aren't the best walk. Pizza Bob's is probably the closest(Domino's and Cottage Inn are maybe a bit closer, but cardboard pizza places) at maybe a couple of blocks or so closer.

Although, to be fair, that particular Cottage Inn is the "original" and is more of an authentic restaurant. I just never cared for their pizza...

Thanks, Depending on how much time (and maybe weather) a couple miles won't kill me. I'm 64, but not crippled. My knees are only 2+ and 5+ years old. I'll keep Joe's in mind. In fact, I think that's where we ate once the last time in Ann Arbor. We went by car that time though, with my mom along.

The lake effect snow off Lake Michigan can be pretty bad SE of the water. Lived in Mt Pleasant Michigan for awhile and if the weather is bad, detouring a bit south, further into Indiana until you are further east helps when crossing to the east towards AA.

The walk would be basically straight through campus, so that at least wouldn't be bad. Just weather and time of day looks to be the key. Both days, the lows are in the mid to upper 20's, so wind would be the factor to making that walk suck or not suck...

As long as you aren't driving in late on Friday, you should be fine. Rain may turn into sleet/snow after dark, but temps aren't supposed to get below freezing until midnightish and the precipitation is supposed to drop off around 2:00 am.

So, Saturday morning travel may be a bit ugly, especially if you planned on doing any walking. But, it is actually supposed to sneak into the 40's midday so any lingering wetness should melt/dry up during the day!

The weather forecast I saw from the weather channel says:

Fri 03

36°/30°

Heavy Snow/Wind
100%
ENE 20 mph

Fri 03 | Day

36°

100%
ENE 20 mph
"Watching a potential winter storm. Snow. Snow will become heavy at times during the afternoon as the wind picks up. High 36F. Winds ENE at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 100%. Snow accumulating 8 to 12 inches."
With 3-5 inches on Friday night. Drive carefully!

Local weather reports are calling for temps in the mid to upper 30's, high of 38 and precipitation not starting until the afternoon. The last 3 projected "winter storms" in our area ended up being mostly rain, which turned to sleet/ice in the late evening hours. Everything I see so far, projects almost the exact same.

So, like I said, as long as you aren't driving in late on Friday, you should be fine and most of it should be gone, on Saturday, by early afternoon....

To be clear, I am only looking at the weather in this area. I am NOT sure what the weather will look like in the areas BEFORE you get into lower MI...

Edited to add: The main reason I feel confident saying the trip should be fine is, again, MI uses salt exclusively on the main roads. Between the temps projecting above freezing and the salt, as long as the municipalities across the way in for you guys are being proactive, the main roads/highways should remain pretty clear with little to no accumulation. Again, that is based on the most recent projections putting the weather between 34 and 38 degrees for most of the precipitation during the day.

Zingermans deli is a good sandwich place. It’s pricy and will be crowded, but the food is good.

I wouldn't recommend the walk, which is why I didn't list it, but you are right, if you like a good deli sandwich they are really good.

There is a Buddy's Pizza out on Ann Arbor Saline Road. Not downtown. They have very good Detroit style pizza if you want to try that. But I agree Joe's is the best New York style.

Buddy's is the LITERAL opposite of NYC pizza style. Now, what it is, is the epitome of Detroit Style! Deep dish, 4 corners on a 4 piece and 8 on an 8 piece. Granted, I am partial to Loui's(best deep dish pizza in MI) in Hazel Park(roughly 50 minutes away from Ann Arbor, just north of the northeast side of Detroit).

If you like deep dish Buddy's is your place if you want to stay close. If you have the time and don't mind a bit of travel, to me, Loui's is TRANSCENDENT!

WEATHER UPDATE IN MI:

Most recent local weather has rain holding off until around 3:00 pm with the temperature around 39. The temp starts to drop from there but should stay above 32 until the precipitation dissipates around midnight. So, it may turn to snow around 8:00 or 9:00 pm, but I wouldn't expect much to any accumulation on the roads and anything that does should be gone by early afternoon tomorrow!

It's also worth pointing out that Detroit style deep dish is completely different from Chicago style deep dish.

IMO there are kinda 2 downtown concentrations of restaurants in Ann Arbor. There is main street and state street. You can walk directly down main street from the Big House it is about a mile walk.
For burgers in the main street area in addition to Blimpys I would suggest Friday Batidos for burgers. Next to Blimpy is the Fleetwood diner which is also good in my opinion. It is a little dinky counter style diner that serves breakfast style food all day. I'd you like sour style beers Jolly Pumpkin is also on main street. Connor ONeils is a popular place to watch sports. I think the food there is just fine. But I mention it because it's a large bar with lots of seating.
In the state street area I would suggest Ashley's and the Hop Cat as 2 places with solid food and good beer selection. Casey's is a little further down the hill may need a ride to get there. Has good burgers, fish and chips.

ONE LAST WEATHER UPDATE:

It is now doing the "wintry mix" where it is coming down as snow, but melting once it touches the ground, Temperature is currently 37. Hopefully most of you are getting in relatively soon and won't have to mess with this IF it turns into snow in a couple more hours.

Safe travels!

Just rolled into my brothers in Perrysburg Ohio. Catching some district wrestling tonight, then up to Ann Arbor in the morning. Weather was sketchy for a bit through Indiana, but just rain now.

I live in Toledo and it’s snowing up here. Right on that line. Laxhawk and I heading up in the morning.

Yep. It is starting to stick now. Hope everyone that was driving in today did it early enough to get here by dark. If not, the drive in now may suck because it looks like a lot of areas didn’t get out and salt ahead of this because it came in later and the temp was so high when it started…

Drive here sucked! I wish we would have kept skiing on the agenda and left home three or four hours earlier. Lady two cars in front of me slid back and forth from the edge of median to the shoulder. People going too fast, people going way too slow. Frozen slush, ice and 50 ft visibility. Just all-around fun.
On a good note, Joe's pizza is pretty good, but they don't have pineapple or ham. Decided not to drive to suburbs of Detroit to meet a friend for supper after the drive here, so we got pizza tonight instead of between sessions tomorrow.

Yeah, sorry. The temp held it off til the sun started to go down. Once that happened the temp dropped fast enough for the roads to get bad pretty fast. Definitely not worth driving the extra couple hours(probably more with the weather) to come this way tonight.

Roads should be cleared by tomorrow night and the last session should be over in plenty of time if you decide to try this side of town tomorrow night.

I agree! Took us an extra hour and 1/2. People driving between 20-60mph. Went with cottage inn for pizza. Kids loved it. Hopefully the parking lot is cleared in the morning. More snow here in one night than Iowa has had all winter.

Yeah, sorry. I watched the local weather reports nonstop. The key was for everyone to get into the area by 5:00 or so. After that, I am sure the drive sucked. The temp dropped pretty quick from 3:00 to 5:00 and the snow turned into The Hulk at that point.

Hope everyone made it in safe and it warms up fast enough today to make your travel to and from Crisler as easy as possible. Have fun!

The drive sucked from 1:00 on. It was pouring and low visibility from just west of Chicago on. It was 31 degrees or less from there on.

Yeah, I was a bit east, actually at Individuals in Detroit and it didn’t start falling until 3:00ish and didn’t start really sticking til 5:00ish.

Like I said, I was only closely following local weather.
