Bill targeting Stanford band (seriously)

This is probably going to be my favorite story of the year. I hope they make a movie about this guy.

Surprised this hasn't been posted on here yet. Do not like, Iowa Legislature is making Stanford's band happy by doing this. Why keep dragging it on, this should have been dropped a long time ago. Also stupid because it probably hurts the three Iowa universities more than it hurts Stanford.

Stereotypes? Where do they come from. What kind of idiots are running the state (oh, yeah, we know). The band was clever and funny and good. Someone needs to tell the boys and girls in Des Moines that it is okay to laugh at one's self. Good grief.

We agree that this bill is stupid. However, the Stanford band was not clever, funny, or good.

I really didn't have a problem with the halftime show. What I did have an issue with was the pre-game statements the Stanford band made that basically portrayed Iowans as misogynists for supporting a football program that painted the opponent's locker room pink. The band said that Iowa was intentionally subjugating women by advancing a gender stereotype portraying women as inferior.

Thus, they put in effort to find a way to be offended, then called Iowans bigots because they found such a way to be offended. Thereafter, that same band puts on a halftime show with the sole intent to offend Iowans by advancing a class-stereotype which subjugates blue collar agricultural workers. Had the band intended for this show to be ironic, rather than hypocritical, then I could have seen some humor. However, I see no evidence that this was their intention.

The result is a pre-game and halftime performance that should be considered sophomoric and simply forgotten.

Exactly how I felt. I was more irritated by the agenda driven and ignorant pre game show than the halftime show. However, after the pregame show, the halftime show became more offensive.

That being said, why we are wasting time on a bill is beyond me. I've been over it for a month, why can't our state legislature let it go? And, the simple fact that the sponsor of the bill is running for Congress in my district is embarrassing. I can't imagine the "good" he will do in Washington...

As should your post.

Holy Hell. I thought it was just one crazy guy. These guys should be sitting in front of a jury, not sitting in the state capital.

And we wonder why young people leave the state of Iowa...oh, ok, there is that jobs thing too...but idiots like this don't deserve to share the air we breathe. Stanford is absolutely laughing their asses off...you can't make this stuff up.

We had the high road as most of what I saw made fun of the privileged idiot band members. With this move, the high road is gone and it reinforces the stereotype of Iowans. We need to grow thicker skins. I thought it was stupid but it was time to move on about an hour after the game.

No, they were not. Put aside all of the other nonsense surrounding their performance and the actual sounds (I'm not even going to call it music) that their band made were awful. I guess that is to be expected when they are banging on skateboards, sinks, and water jugs instead of drums.

This is an excellent post and should be studied.
They have injected politics into their marching band. Whats new? Liberals being liberal. A bunch of incoherent living self absorbed idiots. NO one should except bad behavior.

By the way the rest of the pac 12 hate Stanford and their hapless band.

Attention whores want attention...with this, we are providing it in spades. If you want the Kardashian's to go away, don't watch the freaking show. I don't expect that to happen because I always thought the rest of the country were idiots...now my home state joins them.

And Iowa fans wonder why guys like Cowherd have no respect and poke fun.
Yeah, this depicts are current society to a f'ing T.

What ever happened to Sticks and Stones... bunch of f'ing wussies anymore.

Hell Yea, not sure what you said but I second it!

The last thing I worry about in life is Cowherd but this thing with the Stanford band is stupid. Let it go. How about beating them on the field the next time? That will go much farther.[/QUOT

I would agree with your sentiment concerning Colin Cowherd; however, I read plenty of unhappy posts concerning his disrespect towards the University of Iowa football team and the people. The Stanford Band did exactly what I would expect from the "Left Coasters" of Palo Alto and that is look down their noses at the fine folks that hale or reside in "fly over country.".

Agreed. Cowherd is an idiot, but the left coasters, especially in the Bay area are a different breed. I lived on the west coast (San Diego, LA, San Fran) for like 5 years and they are just a bunch of spoiled brats with no responsibility. It's too bad we aren't just allowed to kick some peoples ass.

Or as AND1Hawk said, "how about beating them on the field next time." If Iowa football had kicked a little arse in the Rose Bowl the whole Standford Band scenario would have looke like nothing more than sour grapes.

True, but I still like the idea of just a good old fashioned street fight where some real punishment is laid down. Either way.. I'm with ya.

I was there. I thought it was disrespectful when I first saw it live. When I got back, I read the transcript and realized it was much ado about nothing. They make fun of themselves as much as they do anything else. I think the band itself is terrible (seriously, it sounds like they are just a bunch of 3 year olds banging grandma's pots and pans); but after further review, I didn't find anything what-so-ever about the halftime performance to really complain about. Live and let live. It's pretty petty to legislate an apology, even it it had been an egregious disrespect.

Isnt it interesting the white knighting going on here for the Stanford band. Get this through your head...they are laughing at you as well. You are not enlightened for finding the humor in their performance. You are just...well...stupid.

Not sure what good a bill in the state of Iowa does but I sure don't mind a response to a punk ass kid. Which is what the Stanford band is after all. A punk ass kid that needs to get punched in the mouth a few times to grow up. This bill doesn't do that but it is better than nothing. Funny how them speaking their mind through their horrible performance is defended and yet the response is supposed to be silenced.

The Rose Bowl itself by the way had a harsher message for that particular group of people.

What they did was wrong and it is not only fine to be offended by something offensive it is also fine to speak up.

Who cares if they are laughing or you think it plays into what they want. It stopped being about them the second they stepped on the field and made a mockery of themselves. The response isn't for the band...it is for those of us that want this message to be heard. That band of enlighted clever people? The ones worried about womens rights? Yep they haze women and sexually assault and harass women.

All the challenges facing our state and country (politically) and we are spending time on a bill that addresses halftime decorum from college bands?

Uh...seriously?

What happened to the days when band members were considered geeks and no one cared what they did anyway? I don't know about the rest of you, but whenever I've attended a college game I've never once sat to watch a halftime show. Why? I was too busy standing in line anxiously waiting to flush a healthy dose of Vitamin Pee out of my system.

Do they think this is the best way to earn votes? What a bunch of morons!
Are there not more important issues in our state that a few dorks/misfits making fun of us?

Also what is the bill even really doing? I see they still would allow us the $$$ events(sports)
The Iowa legislation would prohibit "certain future collaboration and cooperation" between Stanford and the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa. However, it would permit sporting events between Stanford and the Iowa universities. In addition, collaborations and contracts already in effect would be exempt from the ban.

This is the biggest misuse of legislative power ever. Get over it! I was there, it sucked but our State Representatives need to HTFU!!!

Wouldn't it be more effective to put a burning bag of poop on all the band member's porches?

This is probably going to be my favorite story of the year. I hope they make a movie about this guy.
The guys happened to have grown up in California and attended one of the many branches of Cal, namely Riverside. So he is not exactly a straw chewing Iowa hick, I guess. He also rides Ragbrai every year under the name of
Chickenman.

What a load! That band was your drunken unkle at the family reunion who was not nealy as funny as he thought he was.

The point is not about a drunken band or uncle not nearly being as funny as they think they are. The point is the Iowa Legislature need not get involved. Would your family refuse to have anything to do with with this drunken uncle who was not nearly as funny as he thought was? Would you ban him from future family reunions?

Yup.

Do not support the Stanford band or their school's idiotic decision to blindly support their band's performance simply because it's from their school....and do not agree with people who also blindly and ignorantly have no problem with Stanford's band.........

But it's time to let it go.

They were adolescent, awful and not funny. I don't understand why they even call it a band. There isn't much point in them even having instruments. I was there and was perplexed, but when I found out that's there thing, I thought, Okay, pretty stupid, but whatever. Passing a bill is about the biggest pussification thing ever and reflects as poorly on Iowa as the Stanford band reflects on their university.

Embarrassing. I thought it wouldn't be possible to out dumb the Stanford band, but looks like I was wrong.

Disagree, they weren't clever or good. Musically they were weak and the jokes were worn out. I wanted to laugh and like it but they just were bad. Very un original with the Hick and cow jokes. I would except more from Stanford's superior intellect.

I was perfectly fine with the roasting; but could you imagine the uproar at Stanford and the Nation if they did that about Gays, Lesbians, Mexicans, Native Americans or Blacks?

While I thought that the Stanford Bands performance could have been construed as disrespectful, I don't think that this is the proper approach. Would I would like to see is a legislative action at the state level that went after trade with the State of California, immediate dismissal of all students from California from universities at Iowa and removal of the Iowa universities from the AAU. Additionally, I'd like to see Arnold Schwarzenegger issue a direct apology, along with Gray Davis and Jerry Brown, also. Not only did Stanford make us look silly, they made us look thin skinned and tightly wound. This can't simply be dismissed with jocularity or any measure of perspective or maturity. We must react and we must react in a way that shows we take this seriously, ourselves seriously, Standord University Band VERY seriously and will not simply ignore the situation. Yes, it could be argued that these were just kids who don't really dance very well and wear pretty stupid costumes and wouldn't be able to get away with something like this if there were any standards of artistic merit or actual humor present but that's a very narrow and parochial view. This requires a proportionate response and, of course, an awareness that proportionality means massive in this case. If we allow this now, there will be a precedent set. If we don't fight the Stanford miscreants over there, then we will have to fight them here in the streets of Iowa. I, for one, don't want to see Iowa have to deal with another conflict so soon after the Minnesota Governor erroneously declared that downtown Des Moines was kind of dead at night. We showed our mettle dealing with that existential threat and we must rise to this occasion. What will it be, Iowa people? Who are we? Is it possible to know anything outside of the boundaries of our own perceptions?
