Black helmets this Saturday?

Actually not a horrible idea. I remember this being done years ago but don't remember why. Was it 9/11?

This was a Hayden thing. He believed Hawks didn't fly in time of mourning or something along those lines. We also took the decals off for the alamo bowl against Texas Tech in the late 90's. I believe a family was killed on their way to San Antonio. KF didn't take the decals off when the Behren's were killed on their way to the bowl game against LSU two years ago. I doubt he will now either

It has been done twice.

First was in reaction to the Gang Lu shootings on campus in November 1991...one day before Iowa was slated to play at OSU.

Second was the Alamo Bowl in December 1996 after backup linebacker Mark Mitchell's mother passed away in a vehicle crash on the way to the game.

Sash was unquestionably a great Hawkeye. But probably the black helmet thing won't take place on Saturday. More likely is the addition of a #9 sticker on the back of the helmet. Less likely, but not completely out of the question, is a moment of silence...despite the game being played at ISU.

Also, you're quick to be an Ahole to other posters so I'm not really shedding a tear for ya there bud.
Easy DB. I call spades, spades when warranted regarding politics. Do I have to go all SP on you?

Too early to tell. Some people will be upset if we honor a suicide victim, thinking it's glorifying the act rather than mourning the person.
Agreed. I think moment of silence and a patch would do fine.

We don't know the official COD yet so probably not appropriate to speculate

If I'm going to insult someone with the abbreviation of a football position, I'm going with P. With all due respect, those guys probably have the easiest job of the group. K would be a distant second, because those guys deal with a lot more stress, than the P's.

So, you all have been warned. If I call you a P, you'll know I'm hoppin' mad.

I'd like to see the coaches and team do whatever they feel is appropriate to honor their former player/teammate for some on the staff. It doesn't matter how he died. He's gone all the same. If they want to strip the helmets, wear a patch, or go on, business as usual, they should do whatever they feel will honor Sash's devotion to the program and his impact on their lives. I know the PC police will bitch if it turns out his death was caused by himself or some other "undesirable" way, but what's desirable about death anyhow? Let the people that loved him, knew him, and will miss him most, grieve however they feel is respectable. I think most Hawkeye fans will have their back no matter decision they make on the matter.

I actually have a hard time believing there will be any kind of outcry if suicide is determined to be the cause of death. It would be tremendously disappointing and extremely juvenile if there were one. I'd hope the Iowa program wouldn't withhold a show of appreciation for Tyler and support for his family out for fear of some ridiculous outcry. I think it's entirely possible that Iowa and ISU, alike, will make some kind of show of support on Saturday. A moment of silence seems pretty likely to me and would be a classy move on ISU's part.

If suicide is the cause of Tyler's death it should play no part in the way he is
Honored. Anyone that has lost a family member. Friend. Coworker. Etc. should realize that a person was in a great deal of personal pain and for whatever reason could not handle it. Our family has dealt with depression and it is a very difficult illness to deal with. My sympathy to sash family and any person or family dealing with it. At times I am surprised at some of the posts on this board but
At a time like this they are just simply in poor taste and completely unnecessary. Jmo

While this is obviously a tragedy and a down moment for the program, IF it is indeed a suicide from a mental condition (depression), if honoring him in any way helps one person seek treatment, then it would be worth it. Anyone complaining should be promptly pummeled in the face.
The human brain is an amazing thing; both positively and negatively at times.

If it was me making the decision, I would like to see a #9 on the Hawkeye jerseys whether it is on the chest or the sleeve. And as others have said, it would be a class move to have a moment of silence at Jack Trice given how close to game time this tragedy occured.

Please note that I agree, regardless of the situation (unless it's a Chris Benoit type) there should be the full 21 gun salute for Sash. I'm just saying there are people in the world that don't agree with the boards sentiments.

I understand being concerned about all what might caused his death but he was one of the best to ever play his position and the years he played he was one of the top performers on teams that won many games. He was an awesome SS in the passing game but made so many plays in the running game. He was one of the best and deserves a tribute. The fans deserve a tribute

I think he should be honored at a football game for his life and his accomplishments in the game of football. However, I would just like to point out that 21 gun salutes are used to honor the President, Heads of State, US Flag, etc. You may be referring to a 3 volley salute (often 7 rifles fired 3 times at a funeral). Three volley salutes are generally reserved for military or police funerals.

I got the impression Cougar was using the term "21 gun salute" figuratively rather than literally. It seemed to me like he was indicating that the U of I should go all-out to commemorate Tyler. Could be off base, but that's how I took it. I agree, Uro -- an actual gun salute wouldn't seem like the appropriate show of respect.

Don't know who made the point we're all Iowans, but it's true. And cause of death is moot in my opinion. It's tragic no matter what and his friends and family need support. I think it would be really cool if both teams took a logo off one side of their helmets and replaced it with a 9. Just for this game. I'd like to believe Kirk and the Hawkeyes would do the same of it were a former Clone star.
