BMW having a rough go of it today:

For those not on "x", BMW of Europe decided it was going to remove itself from the platform today stating they had concerns of Musk and nazism.

And then the internet reminded BMW of its actual heritage........

Fwiw: I didn't know you could get a 1940s BMW with a hand selected swastika on it.....
Oh no, not the internet!

You'd be amazed how most Germans hate Naziism. This is no surprise.

Their "heritage" from the 1940's means they can't leave X in 2025? Yeahhhh, I guess the remaining people on X are of a certain intelligence/school of thought so this tracks.

You think Bavaria wants to be associated with Nazis? There is still deep seated bitterness there over what the Prussian influence and the small Austrian man did to their country.
Not saying they are Nazi’s or anything. Just the German history that everyone always has in the back of their mind with you think about the country.

I don't get the expectation either. Because the people in charge of the company 80 years ago were pro-nazi, the company has to remain that way forever? Did we not want the people of Germany (and their companies) to learn from the mistakes of their country's past and learn/grow from that history?

To be fair, millions of users have left x. I left that platform myself a couple months back.

Seems Bluesky is the Twitter alternative. They've picked up most of what twitter has lost. Already has 27 million users.

You should check it out.
All you are saying is that each side now has its own version of twitter. No one cares.

What the hell, Whiskey what is your point on this. Yes they made engines . . . for airplanes from 1933 to 1945. Started dabbling in motorcycle engines. Made a ton of airplane engines for WWI and WWII - using a lot of slave labor. Most of their production facilities were bombed. They were then banned from making any engines, for vehicles or aircraft survived by selling pots and pans and other small items. In 1948 they began making Motorcycles, and their vehicle brand started to develop in the 50's. So first off you may want to study your history a bit . . . or at least watch Finding Forrester.

2ndly - they of all companies would know the consequences of Nazi beliefs, and ultimately the leadership style, that Trump and Musk are following that could potentially lead to similar outcomes. It might be time for you to stop using the internet.

The folks in charge of BMW's social media are 3-4 generations removed from Nazi Germany. I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make.
Not "3-4 generations." The Quandt family members running BMW now are the children of the Nazi Party member-parents that ran the company all the way up to the 1980s:

The Quandt family is a German industrialist family that owns a large portion of BMW. The family has been involved in war crimes and Nazi affiliations.

Family members
  • Günther Quandt (1881–1954): Founded an industrial empire that included BMW and Altana. He was close to Hitler and used forced labor from concentration camps in his factories.

  • Herbert Quandt (1910–1982): Son of Günther, he was a member of the Nazi Party and has been accused of war crimes. He is considered to have saved BMW.

    • Johanna Quandt (1926–2015): Wife of Herbert, she was a major shareholder in BMW and served on its supervisory board until she retired in 1997.
    • Harald Quandt (1921–1967): Son of Günther, he was a German industrialist and the stepson of Joseph Goebbels.
    • Stefan Quandt (born 1966): Son of Herbert and Johanna, he is an engineer and industrialist.
    • Susanne Klatten (born 1962): Daughter of Herbert and Johanna, she is a businessperson.
    • Silvia Quandt (born 1937): Daughter of Herbert, she is an artist and one of Germany's richest women.

Glass houses.

My point in all of it is virtue signaling often ends with egg on the face. BMW, at its core, doesn't give a shit about any of that, they care about profits, and they thought this would drive brand engagment.

So you are saying this is all made up outrage? That they don't have a legitimate complaint? Coming from someone who just said they made vehicles in the 40's with swastikas. Ok who is the one making shit up? However that company was built on a very shitty ethical base and is much different than what it was 80 years ago, but I am sure you already knew that.

I have a confession, I saw the brass BMW swastika and guessed on the year of production, you got me.
"30s".

BMW's story is well known, while I don't know the exact intricacies them making engines, specifically plane engines for the war is low fruit.

Here is what I think actually happened. BMW Europe found a way to go social justice warrior and did so, in their climate it felt like a good idea. We americans pointed and laughed at the hypocrisy. This too shall pass.

Out of curiosity, what series do you drive?

My dad had a number of BMWs when I was growing up and into my early adult years. He loved them. He was well aware of BMW's involvement in WW2 supplying engines for the German war effort. And he didn't care. Nowadays, I drive mainly Japanese vehicles. And I'm aware of the horrible acts committed by the Empire of Japan. And, I don't care. Wars end. Enemies become friends. And down the road we do it all over again.

So 3rd and 4th generations, because it would be the kids and grandkids of Stefan, Susanne, and Silvia likely running it now. Glad we cleared that up.

Again, not vehicles, Motorcycles. 1st vehicle engine wasn't even manufactured until 1948. As to my vehicles, GM and Buicks the last 15 years. I knew nothing of BMW's history, loved Finding Forrester and specifically that scene. Watched it in Composition class in high school, did some research and incorporated it into my essay.

I bought a mid 2000s ci330 convertible this summer just to have as a fun summer driver. Like it so far, pretty peppy, great handling, golf clubs fit in the trunk, don't care about their politics bc I'm not an insane person.

I was speaking more about the marketing people making social media decisions.

Bavaria, especially Munich was the home of Nazism. Prussian (Hohenzollern) influence is a whole different issue but Bavaria and the Ober Salzburg area of Austria (essentially the same area) was the home of 1930's Nazism.

I like to admire Volkswagen's in front of their owners and say "ah yes, the car company Hitler built"

People from Bavaria don't see it that way. I do a lot of business there and they blame Bismarck for initiating the chain of events that lead to Nazism.

I don't suppose anyone has been bringing up that these ties to Nazism in the 1930's and 40's are exactly why they are very sensitive to it now? Yeah, they did bad things 90 years ago. They don't want to do it again. That's the entire point.

Now, if anyone can find examples of them supporting Nazi's more recently then they would have a point.
