Bob Bowlsby hired both of the head coaches in the Rose Bowl

That is more than a little misleading. The "committee" hired KF at Iowa, and it is well-known that he was not even on Bob's radar at the beginning of the search and that his preferred candidate was Terry Allen. It was only with the help of influential alumni that KF was even given an interview and that prevented Bowlsby from destroying Iowa football by hiring his top choice.

Shaw was merely promoted at Stanford when Harbaugh left for the 49ers. He was brought there by Harbaugh as the OC.

Bowlsby had almost zero input in identifying or hiring either of these individuals for their current positions, he just happened to be employed by both institutions when their contracts were signed.

Imagine if Terry Allen had been hired instead of Ferentz. There's no telling how many coaches we would have had during this time.

Kirk Ferentz was part of the Hayden Fry Coaching Tree.
This was a big factor in the decision to hire Ferentz.
Fry gave his endorsement and this made for a smooth
transition.

What was the story on Stoops? Didn't he say that he wanted the job but Bowlsby said no deal?

General thought/urban myth is that Stoops wanted the job, or at least expected to be offered the position during his interview. He already had the OU offer in his pocket and allegedly preferred Iowa, or he was just going through the motions, depending on which side you want to take here.

Bowlsby was not empowered to make a unilateral offer (the "committee" was in charge of the hiring process) and he/they had already promised an interview to Kirk, who at that point in the process was not really considered to be a serious candidate. Stoops made it clear that if he left the room without being offered the Iowa job, he was going to OU, and that's exactly what happened.

Kirk essentially was given the Iowa job by default, since there were no other serious candidates left (Terry Allen, Bowslby's preferred choice, being blocked, Bobby Elliot having withdrawn due to health reasons, Stoops off the table, and Chuck Long and Don Patterson never being realistic candidates, even though both were given interviews).

The entire process was one big, huge clusterf%^k that just happened to end up with one of the luckiest breaks in history.

Bowlsb'y said he had to wait for a decision from the committee after they interviewed Kirk.Oklahoma AD had no such committee to worry about and pulled the trigger on Stoops.WTF do you have an AD for if he needs a committee to hire a coach?
