Bob Brooks was there as far back as my memory goes with the Hawkeyes and even long before that. He is truly one of the legends of Hawkeye sports. All Hawks fans everywhere will miss him. I hope the 2016 season is dedicated to his memory and service to the University of Iowa.

He worked in a profession he loved nearly until death. If only we could all be so fortunate.

I grew up in SW Iowa, so for us, it was always Zabel on WHO 1040AM. When we moved to Cedar Rapids and as my wife started working with high school athletes, I gained a great appreciation for Mr. Brooks. He would show up to high school games. It was also cool to see the AD at Cedar Rapids Kennedy rush to get Mr. Brooks and his wife, a nice chair to sit at the scorer's table. And of course, when it came time for an interview, he had his big cassette tape recorder. A great man and Hawkeye that will be missed.

Bob was one of the best, glad he got to one more rose bowl, unfortunately it was a stinker.

Read that Bob took a nasty spill while in Pasadena, amazing he was there at age 89, I'm sure he would have been there come hell or high water.

RIP Brooksie, I'll have a Manhattan in your honor.

Must be mostly younger people on here, I'm 40. I will never forget the voice of Bob Brooks. This thread should have a thousand replies!

Ron Gonder (WMT) aka "The Big Shoe".
The Big Shoe, Gonder in my opinion was the absolute best at true factual play by play. My opinion is based on 25 years of radio experience in Illinois, Texas, Tennessee and Iowa. Zabel was a cheerleader deluxe that would be hard to find in today's broadcast world . Bob Brooks was an genuine no nonsense play by play guy and a grand human being to boot. Iowa is blessed to have had 3 good ones. Gary Dolphin is hard for me to listen to FWIW.

Agree on Gonder. He was my favorite by far. Growing up in Cedar Rapids, we didn't listen much to Zabel.....too much "emotion". Brooks was the opposite....too little emotion. Gonder had the perfect balance. He and Brooks were much better at play by play than Zabel.

I did enjoy Brooks on high school games.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Bob a number of times in the middle 60's. Is Susie still living? I have been away from the state of Iowa for the past 20 years and sure will miss his voice.

Never listened to Brooks, in fact I had no clue who he was until seeing him on BTN shows recently. I do miss listening to Zabel though! Wasn't he on Beat the Bear also?
