BTN Mike Decourcy quote

I don’t get this stuff. People realize that Iowa was up four points with a minute left to play right? It likely comes down to Iowa (who was 10/12 from the line) making free throws if Perkins doesn’t gift the Hoosiers with an easy two off a dumb turnover. Stupid take Mike

…”and Indiana can walk away from this tournament knowing they should have been in the championship game”…

Must be an Indiana homer. I felt that Iowa took control of the game and let Indiana back in.
Agreed that the latter part was a head scratcher....I missed the Iowa/Illini game, but this game kind of sounded like a similar story line & outcome...well, sans the bad free throw % by Iowa. ;)

I heard that too. I thought he was basically applauding their effort, and don't think he meant that as a slap at Iowa, but It did raise an eyebrow. I think in retrospect he didn't mean that Iowa didn't deserve to win, more that neither team deserved to lose, and we've been there before as well, so......

I’m not sure why Iowa fans are offended pundits are saying the team losing for 37 minutes and won on a last second contest 30 foot bank shot was fortunate to win.

Iowa was fortunate to win yesterday, we didn’t play our best ball and Indiana did. That doesn’t mean Iowa fans should apologize for winning sometimes that’s the way it goes in sports.

He normally is fair and accurate. Are you sure you quoted him correctly?

And if you did, what was his reasoning? He's been around for a long time, writing for the Sporting News; he is also a BTN studio analyst.

Regardless, I think everyone should be careful using the words "should have been" or "should have won." All that matters is the final score.

However, it was a weird game stat wise.

33:50: Indiana led
03:19: Tied
02:53: Iowa led

Here are the final stats.

Iowa had 9 more made 3's. This helped offset the 18-9 second chance points advantage for IU.

IU had a 50-24 points in the paint advantage as well.

Good take.

Mike is fair, smart and reasonable.

I heard and noticed that last part he said. Nine points up with about 4 minutes to go is not a should be sure thing. With 2 minutes to go, good ball handlers and free throw shooters a 9 point lead should win 90% of the time.

As it was the hawks did exactly what they needed to do they played tough defense, the press got them a turnover, etc and when you pop in 3 treys that 9 point lead is gone in a hurry.

I think he should have or could have better said "IU had the game won with some good play the final minutes and could have won this game."

Agreed. I feel pretty fortunate to get out with a win considering Indiana probably played one of their better games while Iowa was just ho hum for a lot of the game.

Should have? Could have is more accurate. Iowa had seized momentum and was in better shape at that point to win. But definitely IN had a chance with the way the game was called.

Glad Iowa woke up and played IN tough through the end.

Mike also wants Indiana in the tourney. I don't think he has ill will towards Iowa, just wants IU in the NCAA

It just seems like people have to find outrage or feel slighted by everything.

Here are 2 more examples of the outrage regarding yesterday's media coverage:

* There was complaining on this board that CBS analysts in the studio were not praising Iowa enough.

* Someone complained when ESPN labeled one of the game highlight videos as Jordan Bohannon banks in desperation 3 for Iowa win. (link follows). They didn't like that the word "desperation" was used by ESPN.

Link to where ESPN called it a "desperation" three:

It's like I said in another thread, JBo misses and we have OT. We may have smoked them in OT. And if Perkins doesn't turn the ball over we may have never even needed that shot. Guess Indiana was lucky they had a shot at the end.

This is how IU fans would counter your "may have," "if" and "lucky" comments:

* IU may have smoked Iowa in OT had the lucky JBo banked in 3 not gone in

* If Keegan only shoots 5-10 instead of 8-10 from 3, IU wins.

* Guess Iowa was lucky in more ways than one

Seems to me there was a game back in the Lute days when Northwestern led the entire game until Vince Brookins hit a shot at the end to win it for Iowa.

If we had been up 9 with under 5 minutes and lost, I can guarantee that we would be saying we should have won.
I would say, "if we're ahead by 9 & under 4 min's left & we lose, rather would say, "we deserved to lose". Not whinning, "we deserved to win".

With his logic Michigan deserved to win the 1st game over them.

There's a difference between losing and being behind. It was a very close game the whole way.

It was a great game. Probably a classic for both teams. Indiana got past the shadow of the “Miller” era and IOWA won on a 15% shot. My wife is a Hoosier and she shed a tear. Tough game in our house, but the Hawks gutted it out.

Mike is fair, smart and reasonable.
Emphatically proclaiming "Indiana can walk away from this tournament knowing they should have been in the Championship game" is a sure sign of an obstinate and biased moron. I hope that McCaffrey and Iowa make him eat shit for as long as he is analyst at the BTN. Sorry your team lost Mike, you squeaky weasel.

What are all of these dopes missing? They weren't up by two and lost on a last second three. The game was tied. Worst case for us it would have went to overtime.
We had the momentum.
Freaking clowns.
