Burroughs future

Did anything out of the ordinary ever come out on what happened in Rio? That was just so un- Burroughs.

I think he'll take some much needed time off, watch his babies grow a year or two, and retake his crown. Here's hoping anyways. What an awesome ambassador for the sport he is.

Still too close to the event. It stills stings
Blogs tend to be stream of consciousness.

Give him time to heal a little. See what he says in December.

I don't think JB will be done.

I just have a hard time envisioning his last match being a loss by TF to bekzod abdurakhmonov.

I don't even see JB losing when I think of him in my own head. That thought just does not compute very well. Either way, he has had a heck of a ride.

Since the Olympics I've thought that JB would take a year, maybe 2, and just step away from the sport. Rest his body, heal up any issues, spend time with wife and family and then come back for US Open / Worlds in 2018 and start gearing up for one last push for 2020. It was just a matter of time until JB communicated that with the wrestling world, and of course he crushed it out of the park.

With that said, look for Dake to work back down to 74 kg and win his first World medal in 2017. BUT DO NOT COUNT JB OUT, HE'S COMING BACK.

Nothing came out, but the night before JB wrestled John Smith said "not to bet the farm on Burroughs". The pressure is so big. Not only from the wrestling world, but the self-induced pressure of reaching your goals and trying to be the best ever. I think the pressure just got to him, unfortunately.

The same phenomenon hit Brent Metcalf at the worst time, the NCAA Finals against Caldwell. Who knows why all of a sudden one day you look like a one time 5th place finisher from Don Bosco, as opposed to the dynamo you've been for years? It happens. Unfortunate for some, fortunate for others.

Happened to Brent at Olympic trials also

I took the blog as him letting the fans know he wasn't going to rush back too soon and just needed time.

When I read the blog post, I didn't get the feel that he was retiring. I hate to say this but FLO blew the whole thing out of proportion. I'm guessing they got their fair share of clicks out of it though.
Flo did not blow it out of proportion. The headline stated was "Jordan Burroughs Contemplating Retiring" and all the article said was, "In the end, Burroughs gives us a glimpse of where his mindset is as he hints at retirement."

What Flo said are clear conclusions to be made from Burroughs post. The quote below can only be interpreted as meaning that Burroughs is thinking about never wrestling again.

"When you stop seeing gold, you gain the clarity to see life’s true treasures. Maybe I’ll see ya around. Maybe."

They played on social media that it was Breaking news. It wasn't "JB thinking about retiring" it was all caps "BREAKING JB is thinking about retiring".

Why else would Burroughs need to clarify if the largest media website in the sport didn't try and play on our emotions as that what was happening?

Sorry but if the story is Burroughs is taking a brief break from wrestling it's not breaking news.

Because that is what Burroughs himself said. He said maybe he'll see wrestling again, and then added an extra emphasis and repeated the maybe. That can only be interpreted one way and that is that Burroughs is thinking about never wrestling again. Which is huge breaking news.

Now, maybe Burroughs had to come out and clarify because that is not what he meant. But, that is clearly what he said.

Dake should have stayed down for the trials. My opinion is that a healthy Dake would have give Jordan a run for his money at the trials.

Agree with you there regarding Dake. Dake wasn't healthy tho. I was super impressed he made it to the finals at 86 and even got a win against Cox. That just shows you how damn good Dake is.
Dake is making the move back down to 74kg, to the relief of DT fans everywhere. Now, JB doesn't get to sit in the finals at the US Open. Sitting in the finals was such a huge advantage for him in the past. It's even odds for both Dake and JB now. My money is on Dake to take the 74 spot for next years Senior team.

Yeah, now they ONLY have to worry about beating Cox. Piece of cake

Since Cox will be joining the Mizzou football team in 2017, my guess is his focus will be on getting ready for that rather than making the world team next year. I don't think he'll be at the trials.

Wow! He's gonna give up a finals trip to the Trials to play football? Crazy.

He ended his post by saying he was 'maybe" going to come back. There's no other way to speculate than "maybe" he was going to hang it up.

Because he's had such great luck wrestling Burroughs before? JB had a bad tournament. Dake won't beat him anymore the next time they wrestle, than he did the last time they wrestled...or the time before that...or the time before that.

The only way Dake takes the spot is if JB doesn't wrestle. Come on, does anyone really think that JB isn't going to try to make the 2017 World team?

JB is the better wrestler, but to be fair, Dake had him 100% beat in their 2nd match (based on UWW rules). If they had used UWW rules Dake would have won on Criteria, instead they decided to use OT for that tournament.

In no way is JB making the 2017 a gimme. Not even close. I think the majority of the time Dake and JB wrestled was after JB had sat all day and Dake had to run through the field. Won't be the case this year.
I'm a big JB fan. He's all class. Dake is a bit cocky for my taste but the kid is mat savvy and a lot of fun to watch.
You also have to factor in who wants it more. JB has multiple world titles and an Olympic gold medal. Dake has yet to make a world team. Yes, JB will want to win every time he steps on the mat, but a world title isn't as coveted as an Olympic title, which he already has. Dake will unquestionably be more hungry and that will give him the edge against JB as well. I don't think JB has another cycle in him. Dake is just started his quest to Tokyo

That is assuming that the match isn't wrestled differently because of the rules. Who's to say JB allows Dake to be leading on criteria at the end of regulation if they were wrestling by a different set of rules.

Just saying, Dake is very capable of beating JB, not the favorite by any means, but capable. Especially when JB doesn't have the luxury of sitting in the best of 3 finals. I think they will be on more equal footing if they both go through the mini tournament and meet in the finals.
